There are no reliable counters to the sword. If they have a sword and grappleshot, wtf are you gonna do? kill yourself with explosives?
The pump shotgun is gone and hammer is too slow so unless you get lucky with a sniper or shock rifle, the only way to consistantly kill sword users is to use rockets and skewer if u have good aim
The disruptor is great against swords and hammers since it slows and stops sprinting.
The only thing I don’t like against them is if you have no sword and the enemy does, and you’re both one shot, your melee tends to do no damage but you’ll die once you connect
Huh, as a avid user of the disruptor i didnt know that
It sounds like you’re talking about fiesta, which has never been about balance. Power weapons are stronger than regular weapons, and having a good equipment combo with your weapon will make you even stronger. But as you say, rockets and skewer work fine to kill swords at range, as does the sniper. The bulldog can three tap from outside lunge range, and the heatwave can two tap from even farther if you hit all twelve pellets in vertical mode.
Hammer has a longer kill range than the sword lunge, so you can bulltrue them pretty easily as long as you read their charge. Plus, even if you swing too early the shockwave off the hammer will throw them away from you and give you a chance to try again or switch weapons for the kill.
Also, you can use other equipment to get the outplay. Repulsor is a good one, you can either use it to jump clear when they grapple in, or just push them back to buy time to gun them down. Thruster can be used for quick evasions, or you can juke past them with it for the backsmack. I think even the wall can save your life if you get it up at the right time.
The sword isn’t overpowered, it’s working exactly how it always has and should. Its primary weakness is its range and ammunition, which prevents it from being overused (unless you happen to pick up a lot in Fiesta, but that mode is designed to be chaotic). The single greatest counter to any weapon is teamwork. Communicate the problem, and light it up; even an assault rifle will do the trick.

That’s a pretty big if though. And if you manage to get grappled without rounding a corner or making some other sort of maneuver to get them off you, or hinder them in some way, you’re naturally going to have some trouble.
Even then, see above: two Spartans could quite easily gun down a grappler if they’re communicating. Hydras and Needlers can home in fairly quickly. @DDoubleDDeez479 has some great advice on the equipment you can use.
This all seems more a critique of that particular combo, rather than the sword itself. And I certainly see the validity of the criticism: the grappling hook removes one of the core counterweights to its effectiveness.
I enjoy destroy sword users with the needler lol… As long as I’m not entering a smol area where they’re camping or don’t catch them last second, it’s a free kill most of the time lol.
Very fair points, the combo is what annoys me the most, but even the sword alone and by extension the hammer can be really difficult to counter if the enemy is close enough and you’re not either talking with your team or giving positional callouts with markers in casual modes.
If they dont have grapple or thruster it is easier if you have a bit of distance, but corner campers will still ruin your day no matter what you do
If you’ve got a steady hand, sentinel beam melts sword lunging. I’ve gotten a few bulltrue that way.
Actually this is the worst sword in Halo history. Neither the sword nor hammer have alternate melee swings, nor melee blocking, and you’ll continue to lose health and one of you randomly die after multiple clashes. As someone that loved sword tournaments, you could sword each other forever without dying, but you could also cancel a lunge with a melee, and in Reach, you could also sword block with a normal swordless melee in exchange for health, but these lunge block melees also stunned the sword user and broke their shields too, so you could lunge them, or pop a headshot while they’re stunned. Infinite has no counter play or alt fire/melee. Infinite’s sandbox sucks. Halo 5 had the best sword fights, after Reach.
I hate the sword. It should be removed from ranked.
There is no counter to it either
Do forgive my ignorance on the subtle and major changes throughout the games, I’ve not followed them closely enough to say; any complaints I’ve had have mostly revolved around the netcode, but that goes for all melee rather than the sword exclusively. Thanks for the enlightenment.
However, I still stand by the fact that the sword is functional, and the counters exist. Any improvements that can carry over from older games should obviously do so.
You can actually block a sword with the hammer, it’s just gotta be timed right. Having said that my reaction speed is crap so I’ve not managed to recover afterwards to kill them before they lunge at me again.
I will say the Bulldog feels like an effective counter, I’ve killed people lunging at me and I’ve had people kill me while I’m lunging with the sword at them with it. Numerous times. Mangler too, probably, and definitely needler if you’re far enough away before they get close to you.
It does feel a bit OP on certain maps. Whoever had the sword on Recharge in Attrition maps, for example, completely wrecked shop and took home more 2-round wins than not
Sword and Hammer wouldn’t be a problem if they gave us the pump shotgun back.
OP?! LOL, never played halo before?
Sword has a lot of counters.
In melee both other sword and hammer can block lunges, but you have to time it right.
In equipments, repulsor pushes lunging enemy back so you can finish them off with pretty much any weapon of your choice. Drop shield blocks single lunge. Thrusters and grappling hook can allow you to yeet yourself away to relative safety and again try to finish them off from distance.
Ranged weapons - fast TTK is probably the most important so they don’t catch up, for me mangler shines - 2-3 hits to kill, and in the worst case 1 hit plus melee to exchange your life for theirs.
And if you get surprised in close range - well though luck. Your teammates can kill them off though if you play team instead of running around alone.
For me, the hammer is the more powerful weapon seeing how someone can sometimes 1 hit kill me from across the room. It seems somewhat inconsistent though as it happened many times that I couldn’t 1 hit kill someone point-blank range…
My point was reliable counters.
Of course your’re gonna dunk on them at long range but in close range and if, as you said, catch you by suprise you can’t easily kill them since the pump shotgun isn’t around anymore, and punch counter feels harder than ever before.
Whilst i didn’t mention the hammer in the post, the problems also extend to it.
Started in Reach, played all the gaes exept 5 but in all previous games contering it was easier
Guess im srewed then
Theres plenty of counters, if we’re on about ranked then theres a repulser in the map which gives you plenty of time to kill the grav/sword user with most weapons.
If were on about fiesta then you get plenty of weapons to counter it (rockets however have so little counter, kinda just gotta hope they use 2 rockets for 1 kill)
It just has to much ammo. You can make it last until a new sword respawns. The power weapon respawn rate in general is extremely fast and needs to be changed.
