Most say it would be like boarding or dual wielding, we honestly do not know until 343i reveals information like a concrete example.

They might be just new ways of movement and combat, no pick up just cool-down like AA’s. Example the “slam” one of the spartan does in the beta trailer would just be a jump from a height and then hold melee button, this would work since you have a controller(with joysticks which makes aiming harder than with a mouse) it would give an option for when enemies are directly below you. Thrust could be hold jump button to thrust. So you could jump and then hold jump to thrust in whatever direction you feel like or just do it on the ground, holding the jump button might not be the best solution though as it would be a bit unreliable… I don’t know I think the slam at the very least could be a standard ability that everyone just has all the time. Maybe thruster will be on the old sprint button or even AA button. I don’t know pick-up abilities seems sort of… dumb. Oh look fuel for my thruster, and… stronger arm armor for a slam? I hope they will be just standard abilities for your spartan, would be nice i think.
^^^ When I say switching between abilities I don’t mean as pickups. All abilities are built in and are available all the time but for example you’d need to press left or right on the d pad to cycle through each one for you to use.
I don’t think you’d have to switch between them, maybe they’re simply already on and have certain requirements in order to do them.
Like shoulder slam might be available when the reticle is red, and that floor slam might be available whenever you drop from a height.
No switching, it would defeat the purpose of being a “Spartan Ability” as they’ve described. It will more or less mimic AAs if switching is allowed.
They will just be default abilities that are all available and configured to certain buttons, without use of switching, like melee or jump is to Bumper or A etc…

That would be similar to having to cycle through vehicle boarding, melee, or jump though. There won’t be any switching, they’re default features - just like vehicle boarding, melee, and jumping.
I would imagine that when the time comes to use it the option would be on the screen. For example when you PP an enemy Wraith you can walk over and it gives you the option to board.
If it was something like Thrusters (which I really hope it won’t be) then I would imagine that it would be moved to(LB) (Recon). If there are multiple abilities I would imagine that you switch with the D-Pad.
(Nothing is confirmed so these are my thoughts on what could happen.)

I was actually thinking more along the line of Crysis 2’s semi “quick” time event (like kicking a car forward when using the melee button near them).
I think it’d be quite contextual, similar to what you described. In certain situations, buttons can perform an alternate function. As for button combos, I’d like to see that happen, although simple. Having to memorize and perform them on the fly would introduce another level of skill, and couldn’t be called cheating like bxb.

I hope that there are some requirements to these abilities, and that there are simple and fast enough methods to activate them. Seeing as they’re default abilities to everyone, and there’d be switching involved, I’d hate to switch the action of a button before doing a ground stomp when it’s not selected.
So, I hope for a button combo thing going in that aspect.

Hold B while in Midair.
Doing a Thruster-Pack Melee
Hold and Release B while Grounded.
Thrust Jump
Hold A
Wall Kick
Press A near a wall while in Midair.
Side Thrust
Press X and a direction.
Crouch Jump
A then press down on the thumbstick in midair.
Exit Vehicle
Hold Right Bumper
Rapidly Eject from Vehicle
Hold X
Long-Throw a Grenade
Hold LT and Release
Toss a grenade a short distance.
Crouch and press LT
Basically you wouldn’t switch between abilities, you would just use different buttons / use buttons in different ways / use buttons in different contexts.
I’d much prefer them to be contextualized button presses. Juggling abilities would be too much of a hassle. You didn’t need to swap between dual-wielding and boarding, they merely became available when the situation presented itself.
Most likely contextual, like jumping from high up to ground pound (see crisis), or moving towards someone at top (Sprint?) Speed and meleeing at just the right time to shoulder tackle.
Switching, even if well implemented would be cumbersome, and god help us if button-combos ever return.
