In the Halo books it is said that Master Chief prefers Automatics to precision weapons.
Hence why on every Halo game cover we see him on, he wields a Automatic of some kind (With exception given to Halo: CEA)
Halo: CE = Assault Rifle
Halo 2 = Dual SMG’s
Halo 3 = Assault Rifle
Halo 4 = Assault Rifle

Which does make total sense, for one, it takes a total BA like Master Cheif to use the AR in Halo 3 effectively, and the Cheif doesn’t strike me as the type to use active cammo and DMRing Covi’s across the map.
