I recently stumbled across this link and while I disagreed with the author’s premise, it gave me the really compelling idea for an unshielded melee take down.
Be not afraid–it’s nothing elaborate–I was simply thinking should you come across an unshielded enemy, when meleeing them it would be a lot more engaging that instead of being rewarded with a generic smackdown, we should instead see a quick first-person animation of, say, a slash across the throat, or a quick punch to the heart.
This should only occur when holding the melee button a-la-assassination (which, speaking of which, should definitely have a menu turn-off option).
Obviously when meleeing shielded opponents or backsmashing we should still have the classic elbow smash.
If any of you have played Skyrim, you’ll know that these kind of fluid interactions are really engaging and satisfying.
A First person view of shoving a knife up the lower jaw area. If they’re crouched and you assassinate them, you step down on their back, and thrust a knife into the back of the neck…in first person view of course.

Now this is a more reasonable post.
At the moment, a few weapons have variable melee animations while others have only one. While I prefer each weapon having only one melee animation, I can imagine it being boring to some people.
Variable melees was a good implementation, but they do not differ when observed from third person and there are not enough of them.
+1 for mentioning the option to turn off assassinations.
I’ve been thinking about something like this from a Campaign perspective where it would work like a frontal hand-to-hand version of assassinations mixing the first Elite encounter in Halo 4 and something like “Mirror’s Edge” combat.
Pop the Covie’s Shields and if your within about 5-7 feet from it an option will appear that will initiate an animated first-person Spartan killfest, maybe it could even try and fight back but basically it would be an optional way to see how Spartans really fight as opposed to elbow slapping every two seconds to kill grunts.

You could even add something like reflexive evasions (Spartan Time mumbo jumbo) and pull off something like in the H4 prologue, only it would be gameplay!
As far as matchmaking I say keep it how it is now with sneaky from the back kills.
> It shouldn’t be called an Assassination though, and it shouldn’t take nearly as long.
It should be a ‘finishing move’, since you may in custom gametypes have super high health but once you’ve pummeled/shot them down to low health, you should be able to finish them off.

Yup, I think it would awesome it was similar to Mirror’s Edge or the Skyrim first person assassination animations.
As for the “killfest”, do you mean similar to assassination streaks in Assassin’s Creed? I think that would be cool, but for gameplay purposes it would probably be best if it were restricted to cutscenes (speaking of which, image how sweet that would be).

I was thinking of mainly a one on one with larger foes like elites/Promethean Knights and Brutes but more of a slaughter for smaller creatures like grunts/jackals and crawlers.
I basically want to free myself from the cutscene prison and go Apesh!@ on anything that gets in my way, First person super soldier mayhem!
I’m all for SilverSoulKing’s idea, as long as it’s not forced and it varies.
H4 level Dawn had horrible execution. It did not vary across difficulties and you always had to go through it (unless you started from later rally point). Compared to CE Pillar of Autumn, where on Heroic/legendary, you skipped right to the cryotube cutscene and at a later point in the level, you didn’t have to take a detour and bash open a door.
No QTE’s, no, no, no, no, no. Not in Campaign, definitely not in multi-player. If you must press a certain button when prompted to activate an event it takes away from game-play.
Assassination’s are an extremely long process, I for one do not want nor like them. They take too much time and can put you in awkward situations especially when you only when in for the beat down.
Some people like them, others like myself loathe them. If we must have assassinations in the next Halo game, I would like to have an option that allows me to turn it off.
That way, you guys have have what ever gimmicks you want and it won’t affect how I play. Selfish? Yes, but I’m sick of these pointless gimmicks in gaming.

Question, is teabagging a gimmick? You’re adding insult to injury, assassinations do the same thing.

True dat.
Honestly, if 343 added this as well as a personal toggle for assassinations (for those unwilling to only briefly tap melee), everybody would be happy. It’s not game-breaking in the slightest, it would be super satisfying, and it’s just a generally positive, immersive, and gritty addition to gameplay.
To be honest, I was a little disappointing when I heard Halo 4 still had assassinations, but I think 343 made it a lot easier in this game to avoid the animation so I actually appreciate it a lot now. Whenever there’s a lot of people around, I just go with the backsmack; when it’s a sneak-up, assassination’s a go!

It’s already an option.
Personally id like your 1st person view for assassinations. Reminds me of the campaign cutscenese. Looks better that way really.

I mean in the settings (when you press start to bring up the menu).
How about assassination actually serve an in game purpose by having the player being assassinated not get an X from dying and there name doesn’t appear in kill feed.

Unnecessary comment.

Agreed. But what we meant by an option is that in Halo 5 we should have a toggle in the controls menu that prevents you from ever entering an assassination animation (besides those from getting assassinated yourself).
I would like that, because (while I think assassinations are really cool), it’s still too easy to accidentally hold down the button too long and end up dying because of it.
