Sunsetting Waypoint Forums

I hear you. I’ll just agree that we all had different plans and visions of where things were going and what we’d do, and safe to say a lot of things didn’t totally go according to plan following Infinite’s launch. It’s been a hard year+ across the community and studio. That also took a toll on these forums. As it stands, we can realistically also only cover so much surface area and we want to try and meet our players where they are at. Finite time, finite resources, etc. That said, interesting to see how we can tap into some of Discord’s new functionality and create more value there - getting more studio involvement and making it worthwhile to participate in an ‘official’ discussion destination is something I’m very keen to explore.

This is unfortunate.

I mean it’s not a surprise. This new forum UI is nothing like the old one. It’s confusing to navigate, whether your a new user or an old user, things don’t always seem organized, this whole “reply to forum messages to make your own thread within a thread on a thread” stuff is painful for anyone new to navigate around…The list goes on.

It was so much better when Waypoint had the old forum UI. Instead of trying to fix it, they’re just shutting it down cause they see it as a lost cause, I guess kinda like any hope Infinite will ever reach a mainstream audience is.

This whole new forum UI in general has always felt like it’s a tech test, beta, or alpha even. It’s never felt finished, even the Stats took forever to be fixed and show up properly with the “new forum UI”.

It’s sad, it really is.

addressing your first bit –

the forums are independent of the main page so stats and game career stuff is totally separate and not going anywhere.

This.

So much information in fan communities is being hidden away on Discord servers. A forum was an always accessible archive of the accumulated knowledge of a fanbase. You didn’t need an account and it was all searchable. I feel “join the Discord” is often a step further than a lot of people are willing to go.

I think the decline in the forum’s has mirrored the decline in interest in Halo as a franchise, if I am brutally honest. If the series were still at its former level of popularity, it would easily be able to maintain a forum and a presence on other social media services.

The current forum design is also a bit of a turn-off, to be fair.

But as I am sure the forum software’s helpful little notice will tell you, I haven’t been here in months. I never thought it would get to that point for one of my absolute favourite franchises back in the Bnet days. Cutting the final few chords, I guess.

You have, my friend. You articulated things in a way I never could, particularly when it came to Halo’s mechanics and game design in general. Always enjoyed reading your perspective on things. Thought I’d pop in and let you know that. Thank you, and God speed.

This is a mistake, 343i. I know forum moderation is hard, but the archival of data is extremely important. These forums do have uses.

I’d strongly ask you to reconsider a full shut-down. An archival read-only is better. Is this a cost saving measure?

So cut-offs weren’t limited just to employee layoffs? Sad news, but understandable.

Hopefully, the community aspect doesn’t take too much hit, as not every old-school player is that keen on Discord. But the times change and I guess we have to too.

I guess the UI is Halos/343s biggest enemy.

A sad time, but i guess the first and only ever post i made was back in 2012, so fair.

From the bungie.net forums; it’s been nice.

Well I can at least say to you officially, Hermit: Thank you for your support and assistance in particular. If you EVER wanna’ hit me, you know my gamertag - and I’d love to see a message shot my way!

This sucks. I understand the forums aren’t and haven’t been the most prevalent place for discourse around Halo for many years now, but the longer-form and dedicated nature of the forums have always fostered (on average) better-faith discussion about Halo than we see on especially Reddit or Twitter, IMO.

For those of us who’ve frequented the forms over the years- at least for me- this feels like an unsurprising but unwelcome kick in the teeth, and basically a tacit admission that discourse on here has basically been talking into the void for at least the past few years.

343i has been “listening” to Halo fans for over a decade, but fans are more divided than ever about the state of Halo. That divisiveness is a lot more toxic and prevalent on other sites than it has been on Waypoint, IMO. I’m sorry to see it go read-only and even more sorry to see the countless impassioned conversations held on here by diehard Halo fans on every aspect of these games go entirely away.

Thanks for the discussions over the years, everybody.

Since you destroyed the spartan companies with this lame version of the forum is not a surprise, since infinite you are only doing mistakes and more mistakes
