Suggestions for the REQ System and Item Unlocks

First of all, I want to commend Halo 5 for making all multiplayer maps free, and for keeping an arena mode where every player is on a level-playing field.

That being said, there are a few things I dislike about the REQ system and item unlocking in Halo 5 that I think could be improved:

  • All REQs are random. After 2 years, there are still many items I want that remain locked while there are things I don’t care about that I seem to get in abundance. - There is no correlation between my activity in the game and the REQ I get/unlock. For example, my battle rifle commendations have no impact on my battle rifle skins or certifications. - There is no way to pursue specific items. The only option is to just keep buying random packs and hope to get lucky eventually.
What I’d like to see that still enables 343 to make a profit from the REQ system:

  • Correlate commendations and/or achievements to unlocks that are related. For example, make battle rifle commendations unlock battle rifle skins and certifications. Another example might be to unlock the MC visor color by completing the campaign on legendary. This can be used to encourage players to play differently and challenge them (use different weapons, vehicles; do different activities in the game, etc). - Add a REQ point store where individual REQs have a cost and can be purchased. I think 343 will lose money if they completely replace the random items in packs with this, so my suggestion would be to give the player a “REQ item” shopping voucher for every X REQ points spent on REQ packs. This way after spending X REQ points spent on packs (say 50000), a player gets a voucher and can save up REQ points and purchase 1 item that they really want from the REQ point store if they want something specific.

That’s like eating at a restaurant and commending the chefs for not putting flies in your soup

I fully understand wanting to earn unlocks instead of gamble for them by opening lootboxes, but that should not be for certifications (or anything else that gives you an edge in-game). For example, think about the people who only play Warzone Firefight and therefore don’t get Spartan kills to get commendations. They wouldn’t be unlocking any battle rifles, so your idea would be very unfair to them. More importantly, we should be keeping the things you get from progressing in game (including completing commendations) limited to cosmetic unlocks only.

This would still boil down to “open lots of packs to get what you want”, but it would be a step in the right direction I guess

The only thing dislike about the Req System is that There’s no specific challenges to unlock an Armor set Except Achilles like

I wish some armors you had to work/Grind for.
Example:
Centurion Ironside: unlocked by placing 1st 50 times

Shinobi Heartless: Assassinate 100 Spartans

Scout Observer: Perform: Earn 50 Hattrick medals

Helljumper Feet First: Defeat 50 Spartans while in the Air

If there was a 2nd Hunter Variant: Complete Halo 5 on Legendary Difficulty

Mark 6 Gen1 Scarred: Earn 50 BxR medals

Wrarh Anhur: Kill 150 Spartans with the Shotgun

This is pretty much an idea I had, just for some people who take pride in Grinding for specific armors

I agree with this. It would have to be limited to cosmetic items only to be fair. Still, I’d love to be able to earn and work towards some things and not leave everything to chance.

These are some specific examples of what I had in mind where things are unlocked via commendations or achievements. It sounds much more addicting than playing for random items in REQ packs.
