Suggestion to solve "Necroposting"

First allow me to say if this is the improper forum section to post this in I apologize, and feel free to move it to the right one. I was deciding between this or Waypoint Support, but since it’s a suggestion I thought maybe General would be better.

With that being said, we often see posts from months or even years back being brought up, often by Recruits new to the site. This resulting in the thread being brought back to the top, a few people posting to it again thinking it’s “recent”, and the monitors having to get up and take time out of their schedule to put the thread to rest.

This kept in mind, I thought about there being a feature like on the CG Society forums, where the thread is Auto-Locked after a long period of inactivity. This could be 4, 6, or 8 months - which would be considered necroposting followed up by a monitor locking the thread, regardless of how useful the necropost may have been (And generally it isn’t useful anyway…)

This would greatly cut down on necroposting, if not solving it entirely. If a thread really needs to be brought up after that time, they can create a new one. Most of these necros I see seem to be - as said earlier - Recruits that probably found the thread via Google Search and didn’t bother to check the post date, rather than the OP feeling they needed to add something to it long after it dropped into obscurity. So a feature like this could be a good thing.

What do you think?

That’s not quite accurate; there is a judgement call when it comes to necro’d threads. If the new content adds significantly to the topic or the thread was magnificent in terms of the information provided or something along those lines they are left open.

That’s very true, I saw the Halo Wheelman thread have some good responses to it. I apologize for that poor generalization I made.
