Suggestion: Forum Notifications

I don’t know when someone mentions me in a comment or replies to a post. I have to go to “Followed Topics” and check there. It would be much easier to have a notification system.

The forums have email notifications as a feature, came out a few months back. Go to your profile and scroll down to contact preferences, when you click edit you’ll see a screen like this where you change notification settings.

I’m aware of the email notifications for followed threads, but is there a way to see specifically if you’ve been quoted? Sometimes I’ll post in a very active thread, not have the time to keep up with all the new posts, but also want to be able to respond to people who directly quoted me.

Oh, one more question/suggestion. Is there any way to see who liked your post? Not just for my own curiosity/vanity, but also because I’d like to give credit to posts that deserve it, but quoting and saying +1 is bad forum-etiquette, and against the official forum rules. I know that anonymous likes are still technically “giving credit”, but it feels better when they know it’s you.

…Okay, maybe it is just a vanity thing. Still.

No way to do that currently, agree that it would be nice to have an internal notifications system on the site. Maybe something growl-like that pops up when you get a new reply, get quoted or get a new PM

You used to be able to see who liked your post, but it was quite a drain on the forums. You could show / hide thanks as a personal forums preference, but I always kept it turned off. For threads that gain popularity and get a lot of thanks, that’s a lot of users and a lot of queries that need to be made on each page.

I actually much prefer NOT seeing who likes posts. It led to a lot of bandwagoning. I prefer this way.

This has been driving me nuts lately, now that I’m more active here. Granted, I’ve played around with forum software before (like the source code) and I know how those kinds of notifications work and can therefore understand why waypoint currently does not support them, but still though. I mean, it’s very important to be able to know who responded to what you said. This is likely an influence on the apparent low quality discussions that you often find here. The forums could really use this.
