Suggesting changes to halo 5's "sprint."

Edit: I understand people’s suggestions for simply removing sprint outright instead of having to tweak the mechanic to the way it is, and I’m all for its removal. But given 343’s persistence, they aren’t going to remove sprint anytime soon. So I just want to find ways to make the mechanic more interesting instead of leaving sprint to be used for traversal and maybe just running away from the enemy. If you disagree with my suggestions, try coming up with some of your own and post your thoughts (unless you prefer sprint the way that it is).

I don’t find anything particularly wrong with the mechanic itself, just the way that 343 has applied it to their gameplay. Here are some ways that I think could improve the mechanic of halo 5’s “sprint,” and even for future halos.

  1. Allow players to shoot and throw grenades with sprint. This change will decrease the amount of times in which players cannot finish their kills because their opponents managed to sprint to safety. This can also increase aggression during matches as sprint is now an offensive mechanic unlike before. Even if increased speed makes it harder for players to control their aim, it doesn’t mean that 343 should take away this ability to shoot while sprinting.

  2. Make sprint last for a short time with recharge to actually function like sprint should actually function. This will ensure that players plan ahead with how they will use sprint to their advantage instead of sprinting just for maneuvering across the map.

  3. Remove the reset of shields if players sprint while partly shielded. This increases map flow as players will be back fighting in shorter periods of time instead of being forced to wait in cover for shields to recharge.

What do you guys think of these suggestions?

I think they are all truly awful. suggestions. I’m sorry man I don’t even know where to start.

Well please speak then, I can take criticism.

I think sprint is fine the way it is, it doesn’t need any of those things added to it.

This could be very acceptible if this new mechanic replaced spartan charge. It would otherwise make the game worse

I honestly think that some of these additions would really make for interesting gameplay choices and allow the player to be more aggressive in their play style instead of only using sprint as a means of traversal or to run from gunfights. Those uses don’t really offer much creative game play and if anything, frustrate players as sprint is currently a mechanic that clutters the game and makes 343 accommodate time into making sure map design works, and is enjoyable with sprint. I know 343 won’t remove sprint, which is why I wish to improve the mechanic if anything.

  1. If you’re going to let people shoot while sprinting why even have sprint? Idk, and double melees would be awful. It’d just overall be terrible and it wouldn’t be halo. This idea hurts my Halo soul.

  2. Sure have it being a timed thing idc, wasn’t it like that in Reach? Still don’t see the point but ok.

  3. This is one of the most important aspects of sprint in H5 that make it not suck too terribly, removing this would make the game play completely differently and not for the better. People would just constantly be sprinting away while their shields recharge.

Removing spartan charge would be extremely beneficial. I advocate this removal regardless of whether these suggestions are considered by 343.

No just no if you make this happen it will infuence

  1. people running away
  2. People running up behind others an hitting them in the back ( already a huge problem and the worst part of the multiplayer)
  3. People seriously should not make post like this

I think Halo 5 is one of the best multiplayer game on next gen but the fact of the matter is, is that the old games are better and this is coming from someone that started on Halo 5.

I don’t see much of a problem with sprint and a reason to alter it.
What i do hate is the-yoink- spartan charge that comes from it!

I feel that most of these changes will make sprint feel OP and more frustrating than it is now.

Remove Sprint the micanic just causes more double teams, more running up behind people and people at random places on the map at all times because they could run there in 7 seconds. This is why the old halos like 2 and 3 played so much better. #“F*%K SPRINT”

It’s been like half a year and people are still talking about sprint. Jeez

Let me ask you this, what was the point of even adding sprint in the first place? To reduce time needed to encounter enemies, or to help support teammates faster? Many problems that 343 have attempted to address with sprint would have been fixed by simply adjusting base player traits and by designing maps with those ideas in mind, not by adding an unnecessary mechanic that encourages players to run from gunfights. Anyway, just because sprint has been designed from the beginning of conception to remove a player’s ability to do anything while sprinting, does not mean that 343 should simply submit to this standard. It should serve a greater purpose that allows for maximum offensive potential instead of a mechanic that enforces such a defensive strategy. I haven’t even discussed the matter of removing spartan charge (even though this should happen), so double melees are impossible currently. Even if SC was removed, it isn’t impossible to counter double melee, especially with the decreased kill times for pretty much every weapon of the sandbox.

Having sprint become an ability to require recharge (as the name would suggest IRL) would encourage better use of the mechanic besides traversing the map, which currently adds no substance to halo’s skill gap. Players actually have to decide when sprint should be used given certain circumstances during a match, so they can’t mindlessly use sprint whenever possible or necessary without paying a price in how often it can be used.

The mechanic of how ‘being shot while sprinting before reaching terminal velocity takes you out of sprint’ is still in play, so players cannot run away in the middle of a gunfight easily, only if there is ample cover for them to dive back to will this happen (which in that case is your fault for not being properly positioned). This is also where suggestion #1 comes in, so players who are chasing enemies are given an easier time to finish them off since their weapon usage isn’t disabled while sprinting. Unless the player down in shields has actually outmaneuvered the opponent who is attempting to kill them, it should now be much harder to escape fights that you couldn’t have survived without sprint in the first place.

I am against sprint overall, but these are suggestions to help 343 improve halo’s gameplay with it since they aren’t keen on removing sprint.

Not like 343 has provided ample justification for even including this mechanic, besides the fact how they’re conforming to the gaming industry’s standards in games even though it’s an arena shooter. I’m not even discussing on removing sprint, I just want to tweak it.

The way Halo 5 sprint is now is decent.

To be fair, it isn’t bad. But there are issues that I find in my opinion with the mechanic currently, and these suggestions should help alleviate the problems bound to occur with 343’s implementation of sprint.

I’m tired and I’m going to bed so I’ll read this tomorrow, but I’ll tell you the reason for adding sprint was to attract the cod audience.
