Strongholds, Total Control, and Land Grab are just custom options for KotH

I don’t understand 343’s obsession with repackaging and rebranding the same gametypes over and over.

All 3 of these modes function nearly identically, the differences between them could literally be custom options for King of the Hill

Hills in Play:
1 (KotH)
2 (example)
3 (the other 3 modes)

Hill capture behavior:
Only when inhabited (KotH)
Until contested (Strongholds/Total Control)
Locked (Land Grab)

Hill capture method:
Instant (KotH)
After held (the other 3 modes)

Score:
On Capture (Land Grab)
On all zones captured (Total Control)
When Held (Stronghold, KotH)
When all zones held (example)

Hills move:
On timer (KotH)
On Capture (ex)
On all zones captured (Land Grab)
On all zones captured by one team (Total Control)
Never (Strongholds)

That is actually every single difference between all these modes represented by custom options.

These modes could have all been created modularly using one base gametype with well designed custom game options. Instead 343 went out of their way to painstakingly create 4 completely separate gametypes that all have their own generic and lacking custom options. It’s a completely inefficient way to design game modes in a franchise renowned for your ability to mold one game mode into any number of creative iterations.

It’s 343. They just like overcomplicating nothing and making everyone’s lives harder. They could have had options for up to 5 hills, or hills that can only be captured while in a vehicle, or increase the amount of hills to capture each time a wave is completed, 1/3/5. Whatever team captures 5/9 wins. The custom games system sucks and I don’t see it improving, but it sure would be nice to have multiobjective rotation. Tossing flags or oddballs into a hill zone could score points. That was the original Stockpile mode.

One of my favorite custom games in Reach was King of the Hog, where a Warthog was the Hill, and driving it scored you points, and if it got destroyed or enough time passes, it respawned somewhere random. I don’t think we will even be able to make that in Halo Infinite.

There’s a good chance Forge will be really good, but if the custom games are trash, it’s not going to be that useful

Stronghold is very different to King of the Hill
However, total control looks like a poor copy of stronghold, I really hope it will recame in BTP
