I don’t understand 343’s obsession with repackaging and rebranding the same gametypes over and over.
All 3 of these modes function nearly identically, the differences between them could literally be custom options for King of the Hill
Hills in Play:
1 (KotH)
2 (example)
3 (the other 3 modes)
Hill capture behavior:
Only when inhabited (KotH)
Until contested (Strongholds/Total Control)
Locked (Land Grab)
Hill capture method:
Instant (KotH)
After held (the other 3 modes)
Score:
On Capture (Land Grab)
On all zones captured (Total Control)
When Held (Stronghold, KotH)
When all zones held (example)
Hills move:
On timer (KotH)
On Capture (ex)
On all zones captured (Land Grab)
On all zones captured by one team (Total Control)
Never (Strongholds)
That is actually every single difference between all these modes represented by custom options.
These modes could have all been created modularly using one base gametype with well designed custom game options. Instead 343 went out of their way to painstakingly create 4 completely separate gametypes that all have their own generic and lacking custom options. It’s a completely inefficient way to design game modes in a franchise renowned for your ability to mold one game mode into any number of creative iterations.
