Story or Gameplay. Is story irrelevant?

It seems that whenever I browse these forums I cannot help but notice a large amount of displeasure with Halo 4. This displeasure is for many reasons, many of them, well justified. But, it seems that in this hate one aspect always gets overlooked… The story. This begs the question. Does it matter? Is it irrelevant? Does anyone care anymore?

To me, the story is the driving force behind halo games. it surrounds us, penetrates us, it binds the universe together. I for one found the story telling amazing. I actually enjoyed reach’s story but, i never seemed to care for any of Noble team. Their deaths were to quick and to close for me to truly care about them. One of the things I enjoyed with halo four was that the only major death actually made me feel something. Few video game deaths have ever made me feel anything. This death was even more spectacular in the fact that it is one of three fictional deaths to have made me cry. [Sev from Republic commando and the dogs in Where the Red Furn grows being the others… don’t judge.]I also enjoyed the much hated spartan ops. Yes I will give that it was repetitive and had it’s share of moments of mediocre writing but, I saw it as a grand experiment and it succeed.

So, if you’ve actually got through this far. Reading through my rambling. Ask yourself this. Does it matter, or is story irrelevant in the long run?
