I’ve been trying to master as many weapons as I can lately and I’m trying to master the storm rifle right now, note that the key word is TRYING. Whenever I try to use it the connection in the game isn’t amazing, which is understandable, but it seems to me that if you are not host or if you don’t have a very good connection the storm rifle’s projectiles will hit the opponent but will not harm him/her. Only about 75% of the bullets I shoot, actually hit my opponent. Please fix this or at least make it better, because i know that the storm rifle is a good weapon when you have a good connection, what do you guys think about it?
It’s a projectile-based weapon unfortunately, rather than hitscan. Which basically means you have to lead your shots ahead of time, and it varies depending on the lag. But hey, you’ll have a -lot- of fun with the suppressor in that case. Most frustrating weapon to max out I can guarantee you that.
Nope. Plasma pistol is much worse. I’ve had every gun mastered except the PP for months now and because I haven’t resorted to boosting, I’m still chugging along with this.
Let me recommend a loadout that worked for a couple of gametypes with Storm rifle. This set up and strategy can REALLY help you if you are lagging as well, because they depend on patience, deception and speed rather than power. This strategy works with Storm rifle, Suppressor, PP, and Carbine (which is the easiest of the four, but still applies). This works REALLY well on any small map, and if you find yourself in a Big map or Mid ranged map where you don’t have the height advantage, just leave or sit put and wait for the enemy to clear out. You won’t beat a BR if you’ve got Storm and lag to contend with, and there’s NO chance you can take on a sniper or DMR, so stick to your niche.
Storm Rifle
Plasma Pistol
Pulse Grenade
Hologram
AA Efficiency
Dexterity
For this loadout, use the holo either offensively or defensively.
OFFENSE: Run alongside your holo when you enter an engagement with your team. In a 4v4 this will distract the enemy for a few seconds and let you get some important first shots in. Because your weapon is a projectile, you’ll have to close the gap in order to assure you hit more shots. So use your teammates as bait by letting them push first, then follow them with your hologram and shortly after your own Spartan. Clean up anyone that is already flashing shields, otherwise, play support on targets.
DEFENSE:
When either you or your team are holding a position, like a corridor or a corner, use your holo to do any of these three things:
- Draw fire. Can be very useful for switching cover as well as gives away enemy post. Plus if you can get someone to waste a half clip of sniper, you’ve helped your team greatly.
- Draw enemy, if you can get your holo to appear as if you are going in for a melee charge, you can dupe your enemy into rushing the holo, and you can get a quick kill.
- Cover an exit. If you need to leave, or you’re working on an objective where you have to keep a carrier alive, use your holo to appear as if there is a Spartan holding down a hallway. Put the holo right behind cover so that anyone who sees it will think for a split second that it’s an enemy, and either dodge or waste rounds. Either way, hightail it out of there and reposition.
Some rules of thumb for the storm:
Pulse your first six rounds in either two three round bursts or three two round bursts. If you pepper the enemy from range, you can pick apart their shields and then finish hem off.
Another great way to use the weapon is to pop in and out of cover repeatedly landing shots as an enemy charges you. Beware grenades when using this tactic.
You can also really effectively couple the Storm with the PP. People still try to use the PP charge for noob combos, which can work, but three regular shots with the PP and a melee gets you a fast kill, so use the same logic with the Storm. Pepper the enemy with 3-5 shots, run away or quickly reposition while switching to Storm (dexterity will help here a lot) and then clean them up with a full auto burst.
You can also use pulse grenades, and to a less-safe extent, melees to strip the shields and first piece of health off of an enemy. pulse nades work in the opposite way of frags. Frags in Halo are used to either strip a shield of someone as they come around a corner in order to prime a head shot, Or to clean up someone who is hiding behind cover with low health.
The pulse grenades actually explode twice, which makes them a GREAT deception/support grenade. You can use the pulse to pop someone’s shields, and if they stand inside, there will be two small pulses each a second apart that do a small amount of damage. Then the end implosion does the most damage in the grenade’s cycle. So use the grenade to quickly pop a shield from close range, then clean up with your storm. The combo of orange and blue furry got me SO many kills and I mastered the storm and pulse congruently in about two weeks.
Other than that, make use of your jumps, use cover CONSTANTLY, and be patient. Your holo will help you make better decisions and test the water of any given encounter. You could also use the Thruster to get yourself out of situations, but it is a MUCH more useful AA if you know how to be aggressive. Promethean vision works, but gives away your position, which is NOT good for a storm rifle user. You want to get the drop on your enemy, so the Holo is really effective overall.
The Storm Rifle is really the epitome of ambush weapons in Halo. Close quarters is where it excells, and you almost always HAVE to start shooting before your opponent does. As ^ said, stick to that niche.
I find that the Storm Rifle works best in a secondary role with Firepower because it’s the only primary which overheats instead of reloading. So if you start shooting the Storm Rifle until it overheats you can change to your other weapon, preferably a precision rifle shoot it’s entire mag and change back to the Storm Rifle as it is ready again. This allows for a near constant stream of shots at close range. The other automatics (AR and Suppressor) and the precision rifles all need to be actively reloaded, the Storm Rifle vents heat even if you sprint or while not holding it. I think that’s it’s greatest strength.
I might be wrong but doesn’t the Storm Rifle have the fastest projectile speed of all non-hitscan weapons? I am not sure how lag affects it. Less than 5% of my games have any lag at all.
I’ve had it with the storm rifle and suppressor at this point. I give them chance after chance and am always disappointed. The problem is low aim assist. That coupled with projectiles and normal online lag mixes about as well as oil and water. I don’t care if they are slightly stronger or whatever, does not mean a dang thing if none of your shots land or register in the first place. Guess I’m stuck with the ar (which is fine).
