Stop saying BR, It does not mean what you think it does

Please stop referring to Battle Royale as BR. I know this is the acronym younger gamers like to use, but for the OG Halo community it means something else. You guys are confusing my old man brain every time I see BR, my brain goes to Battle Rifle.

Until we know the name of the mode, you’re just going to have to use the context of a post to figure out which BR someone is talking about. I suppose a bunch of the community could just refer to the mode as Tatanka and see if that catches on as the main way to refer to the mode.

Once CA releases the name of the mode the issue will probably go away :grinning:

I hope you’re right. I have to read some of these post like 3 times before I understand what people are talking about. I mean images someone posting hey I really like the BR, it would be great in BR or something. My mind just blew a fuse when I see that.

I’m with you in that BR will always initially refer to “Battle Rifle” in the context of Halo for me.

But with Halo being basically irrelevant compared to what it used to be to the broader games industry, which has been dominated for at least half a decade by Battle Royale games, “BR” means “Battle Royale” to far more people than it means “Battle Rifle” to.

This is an instance where popular usage is just going to dictate things. BR is an abbreviation either way, so it can always mean anything that it could be abbreviating. But the #1 assumption when you see it should be “Battle Royale”, because that’s the most relevant option.

Then what should we say? It’s the acronym for both, should just use context to determine which BR people are talking about. I don’t think people will start saying BeeAre or something haha

Context clues makes this a non-issue. Literally every topic involving BR and BR can quickly be determined by reading just a few words.

Look, I know that Doc says he’s only 24 but even older guys refer to that specific game mode as BR. :joy:

I still think of it as the HTML tag; <br>

Next thing this guy is gonna claim AR means Assault Rifle and not Alternate Reality.

No, I was going to mention the Beam Rifle which is as old as the Battle Rifle ( not in as many games though ), which is also shortened “BR”

Old man shouts at cloud in full swing here, haha, wow. Hey old timer, did you know Battle Royale is one of the most widely played game genres ever?

It can mean multiple things.

Get with the times Mr. Krabs.

The key to understanding the difference is context.
I mean, when you hear one of your friends give the callout of “Grab the BR before the enemy can”, are you going to drop your controller and pick up your copy of PUBG or Fortnite from the shelf? Or are you going to pick up the Battle Rifle from the rack?

“You wanna play the BR mode” is definitely different from “Pick up the BR instead of the Commando if you want to do good in a ranged fight.”
