Stop making playlist specific challenges!

This morning I woke up and decide that just for shiggles I wanted to play some Infinite. I see that the weekly reward is actually not that terrible so I start looking through the challenges to best plan out how I’m going to go about completing them. Lo and behold what do I see as almost every other challenge? RUMBLE PIT CHALLENGES! I hate lone wolves / solo game types! I’ve never been a fan and I don’t find them very fun. They don’t encourage the style of play that I enjoy and instead encourage a sit back at range with a precision weapon and pick people off when they get in a fight so that you win or rack up those kills style. I remember the days of ranked lone wolves in Halo 3. I never went past rank 36/37 or whatever it was when I stopped because I didn’t find the style of play at that level and beyond enjoyable. And now due to the hypercompetitive, always a sweatfest nature of Infinite’s matchmaking every game feels like that and I don’t want to play it. But sadly enough here we are where the only form of progressing through the pass (which is the only way of progressing currently in any way other than playing ranked and getting a rank) is by completing these challenges that have been randomly assigned to each person.

I don’t like solo games so why am I being forced to play games I don’t want to play? If people try to make the argument that by having challenges in game types you don’t normally play it encourages people to play them and find that they may like them. To which I respond, I’ve been playing Halo for almost 15 years. Halo 3 was the first game I ever played on XBL. I was able to play just after the Heroic Map Pack was released. I’m pretty sure I’ve got a good grasp on what game types I like to play and this ain’t it chief.

Start making generalized challenges that can be completed in any game type or playlist. It’s fine to have playlist specific challenges for when you have an event going on, but don’t constantly force us into playlists we have no interest in or will not enjoy. No one likes being told what to do and by forcing us into these specific paths of progression we are being told what to play and when to play it should we wish to achieve anything. Don’t force to either play a game we don’t want to or use up challenge swaps to avoid it. It’s not fun and it’s just downright annoying.

Thats why its called a challenge; to get you out of your comfort zone and complete a game mode that will challenge you.

Also, you can use swaps to remove the Rumble Pit modes or whatever you dont like.

A challenge means for it to be difficult to complete and require skill to do so. To challenge someone does not mean to make them go do something they don’t want to do. Also I’m pretty sure you didn’t actually read my post considering I said that we shouldn’t be forced to use swaps to get rid of stuff that we absolutely will not play. There would be no need for excessive uses of challenge swaps to get rid of several challenges that are all tied to the exact same playlist. Challenges just shouldn’t be tied to playlists.

I am on Both sides of the room here, I agree with @DERK_91 but @whorigin does also have a point. I think if halo gave you 1-5 free challenge swaps every Tuesday at 2ET, that would be nice. also, ya know how it only gives you like 3 challenges without battlepass and 4 with? I have said this multiple times, make the challenge system like Fortnite’s where you are able to do every quest at once or take away the s*** about needing the battle pass for a fourth challenge! also, how did you get the ODST gamertag @DERK_91 THX

If you’re talking about his gamerpic, it’s avatar awards from the x360 days. You can set custom gamer pics as well like my own.

Exactly what @Hot_Juicy_Pie said. It’s from the 360 days of avatar stuff. I’m trying to remember if it was a reward from ODST or the Waypoint app back in the day. Either way I’ve loved the look and lore of ODSTs since they were introduced. LateNightGaming has a great video describing the evolution of the ODST on YouTube. If you’re interested go take a look.

Sadly I don’t think you can get it anymore because the more I think about it the more I believe it is from the Waypoint app on the 360 and I’m pretty sure it’s out of commission at this point.

Anyway, it would be nice if they gave us a weekly login bonus of swaps. I mean I have quite a few since I don’t play that much and they’ve handed out handfuls of them a few times for stuff not working. But it’s still ridiculous to have the system work the way it does. It’s just a series of limiters that prolong progression. It doesn’t make it feel better, it just makes it take way to long to complete them. Only 3 at a time if you don’t have the battle pass, playlist specific, game type specific, point total for indeterminate time to complete, weapon specific. This stuff doesn’t help you progress, it actively resists progress and directs you to play a specific game a specific way.

The challenges should just simply be a reward for playing at all. Something that just by playing the game you will naturally progress the challenges without having to do certain actions to get that progression. I should have a challenge for getting 25 kills not getting 25 kills with a disruptor. I should have a challenge to complete 10 games not complete 10 games of rumble pit. I should have achieve player score not achieve player score in ranked. Halo was designed to be a social game and the competitive scene came after. That’s why Halo was fun and why infinite is nothing but a sweatfest much like Halo 5. And now we have an added layer of stressing out about challenges in order to progress on top of that sweatfest. So it’s an even more stressful sweatfest. Thanks 343.

Thx Derk. I loved doing KINECT on 360…those were the fun times. Anyway

I can’t believe people actually think this is a good argument.

Sure is. What would you call it if not a challenge?

Whatever they (343) want to call them. Could call them “Tasks”, “Mission Objectives”, “Trials” or “Blargermasts” for all I care.

Challenges should be challenging because they’re called “Challenges” is dumb argument.

Sure a challenge should be tough, if that’s the objective, but it’s also a game. Games should be fun. Halo Infinite’s challenges are not fun. They corral players into modes that they may or may not like. MCC doesn’t do this and I don’t think it’s a secret why no one complains about it.

Eh I do agree there’s some challenges that are frustrating. Like the “Win ‘x’ amount of ___ matches” challenge where it will seems to put the worst players on your team so you lose several times before completing the challenge.

And now imagine you don’t have any swaps, you have a challenge to win 5 “insert your least favorite/most hated game” matches. Are you going to spend however long it would take to win those 5 matches in a game type or playlist you have no interest or loath with all your heart? It could take anywhere from an hour to 10 or more to complete it. Why would you want to spend any amount of time doing something you hate or do not enjoy?

This is what I’m talking about. It shouldn’t even be a possibility that you could be forced into a playlist or game type in order to progress. You should never be told what to do by the game and required to do it even if you hate it just so you can progress.

This is a nice idea, but when you have several games you play do this, it just eats into your fun time. Game designers need to remember they aren’t making the only show in town.

Personally I will prioritise playing games that have challenges that reward me just for playing the game. Or the games with rewards I want the most.
