Nothing sads me up more than cut modes, weapons, and vehicles in Halo games. How I long for the Chopper to return. Not to mention the Falcon.
What’s worse though is the removal of things more easy to implement. Why no more Stockpile and Headhunter? Why? (or even Regicide. What happened to them Halo 4 modes?)
I sucked at Headhunter but it was fun stuff. It was like Oddball, CTF, and Assault all in one. Stockpile was a radical twist on CTF and it had that party-game sorta vibe that so many Halo 3 modes had.
Halo 6 needs to pack more game types in than ever before, and I would love to see Stockpile and Headhunter come back. How 'bout you fools?

I’d like to add that it’s important for them to make sure this happens when Halo 6 is released, and not two years afterwards, when the population is too low to support a wide variety of playlists. Halo 5 had that problem which is probably the reason why a lot of game modes were cut, among other things.
Stockpile and Headhunter were kinda fun but I also enjoyed things like BTB Heavies and 1-flag CTF. Really just hoping BTB gets more attention in Halo 6 because it was underwhelming in Halo 5, if you ask me
As officially supported matchmaking modes? Meh. Not really.
As modes that are possible to create for customs and Action Sack? Absolutely.
The list and rank of modes I’d prefer to see take precedence for receiving accommodations and official matchmaking support would go:
-
Slayer - Duh. It also encompasses several variants such as SWAT, Snipers, and Fiesta. I would love to see an official Gun Game mode be possible for the Action Sack playlist and customs which I imagine would have to be created as a possible variant of Slayer. - Strongholds - An excellent non-slayer based objective that works well between Arena & BTB. The past label for this type of mode was 3-Plot. - Capture the Flag - Multi-Flag is a true classic for any FPS and works very well between Arena & BTB. A variant that can be created from it is 1-Flag (aka Neutral Flag), but Neutral Bomb is a better neutral mode option for BTB and 1-Site Extraction is the better option for Arena. 1-Sided Flag required round-based game-play with side flipping, but 1-Sided Assault (aka Bomb) is a better option. - Assault (aka Bomb) - Neutral bomb is an absolutely fantastic mode for BTB. Multi-Bomb wasn’t really ever necessary given Multi-Flag provided similar, but IMO better game-play. And 1-Sided Bomb required round-based game-play with side flipping which sadly we didn’t get. - Infection - A very solid and nowadays expected Social Arena mode where death on the survival side will automatically causes you to flip to the predator team. It’s also an important game-type for many Action Sack and Custom modes. - Extraction - I thought it showed a lot of promise for Arena game-play. Personally, I think it would be an ideal objective for elimination matches and it could be setup in a couple different ways. I was sad to not see it return in official capacity within Halo 5. - Breakout (respawn/elimination) - In Halo 5 it’s seen as the round-based game-play mode and as such I believe it to be a very important game-type; however, the particular mode that was implemented into Halo 5 I believe was very limited and lacking. I wished there had been more freedom to customize the round-based game-play in Halo 5. 1-Sided Assault featuring unlimited lives and side flipping would be one particular variant of round-based game-play that I feel would have been very welcomed in Social Arena. Elimination-styled game-play works very well within a round-based mode and Halo 5 does have a strictly slayer-based version with the Extermination mode; plus, a neutral objective based mode in Halo 5’s Breakout. But instead of a Neutral Flag with the goal of pushing or retrieving they should have brought back the Extraction game-type for this mode. The mode should also have been capable of being setup to work with 2-sites that pitted one team as the defenders and the other as the attackers with the goal of extracting one or the other location and at round end the roles would be reversed – a good option as a Featured playlist, Action Sack addition, and Custom game. - Oddball - A fairly solid Arena game-type when operating with a proper spawn influencer for the ball. It’s basically a secure and defend game-type. - Regicide - I felt it was an improvement on the past VIP game-type and it worked well within the Social Arena environment for team matches including big teams. I think it could have made for a good Featured playlist, Action Sack addition, and Custom option. I was also disappointed to not see it return in Halo 5. - King of the Hill - Another very good mode for the Social Arena environment that happens to work well for many team sizes or even FFA game-play. I was a little surprised to not see it receive any official accommodation support in Halo 5 given its history within the franchise. - Headhunters - As the mode was constructed within Reach I felt it was better off being a custom, Action Sack, or featured mode without official accommodation support, but if they were to take the skull aspect and turn it into a type of Kill Confirm mode where you simply confirmed or denied kills without having to deposit the skulls then I think the mode would become viable for Arena and official accommodation support. It would be awesome if the Reach version could then be created from the Kill Confirm version and put into the Action Sack playlist as a FFA game-type.Honorable Mentions:
-
Ricochet - It was more or less a variant of Assault (aka Neutral Bomb) that I felt worked better for 4v4 Arena game-play than Assault did, but it’s probably better off being seen as a Custom, Action Sack, or Featured option that operates as a variant of Assault instead of receiving official accommodation support. - Grifball - Another variant of Assault that I believe is better off being seen as a Custom, Action Sack, or Featured option without official accommodation support. - Dominion - It’s more or less a Strongholds variant designed for BTB. IMO, it was a good mode, but it’s unnecessary to give it its own mode as it doesn’t require official accommodation support. - Landgrab - A 1-sided variant on territories or strongholds designed for BTB. Best to leave Strongholds customizable to achieve this mode if desired. - Stockpile - More of a silly Action Sack inspired Flag collection mode that’s best reserved for Customs; though, I’m not sure how CTF could be customized to make this mode work in customs. - Invasion - A 1-sided linear progressive game-type that I feel would work best as a Warzone mode. As a linear progressive Warzone mode perhaps it should receive it’s own official accommodations. - Conversion - Another 1-sided linear progressive game-type that uses the Extraction mode as its basis and played somewhat similarly to Invasion. I think this would work best for Customs too or Warzone. - Race - Obviously best for Customs or the Featured slot. It would require it’s own mode or the ability to customize the KotH mode to make it work, but if it did get it’s own mode or doesn’t need official accommodations.

I checked out BTB recently and had some fun, but it’s definitely several steps down from past games. They definitely need some official BTB maps. Bring back Blood Gulch and all that.
I’d just like to see every mode come back. There’s really no reason not to include them. They don’t have to be on official servers, but should still be in the game. I was especially surprised that Gungoose CTF wasn’t in Halo 5. I managed to get into one match of that back when MCC came out and it was some serious fun.

I agree, I’d love to see Blood Gulch return. If it doesn’t work for Halo 5 then maybe in Halo 6.
I too miss all these game modes.
I don’t remember what it was called, but you captured one or more out of three bases and the longer you held the base the more defenses came up and more weapon drops and vehicles spawned at the base.
Had a lot of fun with it in H4, would love to see it return. Also I would love if 343i went nuts with it, and upscaled everything.

I could not agree more. It may have been one of the biggest causes of the player count drop in H5.

I remember something like that in Halo Reach. Wasn’t that a variant of Invasion called Invasion Slayer? Your team had to control a “King of the Hill” type of zone and it would drop all sorts of power weapons and even vehicles later in the match.

You speak of Dominion. A Forger has attempted to bring a version of the Halo 4 mode back for Halo 5 – LINK. Obviously not the same thing as specific base defense items and scripting isn’t possible, but it certainly carries some similarities.
I miss Headhunter. It was a fun gametype to play in Reach.
Dude Headhunter was legitness!
