About 3 weeks into launch I left Halo because the aiming, as many of us can recall, was horrific. About a week ago I came back and boy have I enjoyed it. They (mostly) fixed the three reasons I left.
Forge is absolutely amazing!
Customs are great (although we need more gametypes, hype for the incoming update AND confirmed infection!).
And it appears they fixed the aiming issues for pretty much everybody. That being said, I am still having issues with the aiming that has resulted in me quitting arena almost entirely. The issue is, sometimes it feels great, but then 2 minutes into the game it feels like I am trying to aim a drunk spartan, I’ve seen many people describe it as trying to aim underwater. Now I know that it is not just something that I need to get used to, because I experience periods without this issue where my aim is absolutely on point, and then I’ll get hit with this wall of terrible aiming.
I play with a relatively new controller, on about a 40 inch TV. I’ve toyed with the settings and followed the guide regarding deadzones, but that is not the issue. To the people who don’t experience such problems, what equipment are you playing with? Do I need a gaming monitor for this? Has anyone else experienced these issues post-aiming-update and solved them somehow? Thank you all for your feedback, and to those of you who tell me to “git gud son,” I highly encourage you to stick a -Yoink- up yours.

343io shouldnt have messed up the aiming by separating it into two groups, aiming and turning. Personally I feel that they should have left it alone
It takes awhile to get used to. And make sure to mess around with the sensitivity and aim acceleration to get it just right for you. I play on either 5 sensitivity and 3 aa or 6 and 2 and that seems to be the best for me. If I start doing bad I go 5/3 and then when I get comfortable or in rhythm I change to 6/2.
I don’t think there was ever any real issue with the aiming… 343 said that the aiming was tweaked after the Beta due to the varying ranges of combat, I believe…
Halo 5 maps are quite a bit larger than previous Halo games, due to the movement options… meaning a lot of gun-play happens at longer ranges. The aiming (I believe) was tweaked to allow for a minimal, “fine-tuned” feel for shorter movements/short durations of thumbstick movements for longer range engagements, and for longer durations, the aiming speeds up in order to effectively fight at close ranges… Something like that. It definitely feels odd compares to old Halo’s and other FPS’s… but I turned my sensitivity up to 7 very early on, and it feels just about right to this day. I feel that the point of aim-acceleration is a bit more subtle due to the fact that the crosshair moves a bit faster in the initial phases prior to speeding up.
However, I still DO occasionally have troubles with my aim “freaking out” like some of the complaints have stated… but that’s if I’m not in control of my aim and playing confidently in the first place. With that said, I feel like there never really was an issue. It was simply a design-decision.
EDIT: I will say though, I didn’t really have a problem with the aiming in the Beta… I remember enjoying it. The final game feels similar to it, at higher sensitivities, IMO…
I suck booty on high sensitivities, but I suppose that is my best bet for fixing this -Yoink-. I think the issue is what zancuran pointed out, because this game definitely feels much clunkier than previous Halos. As far as getting used to it, I’ve put in well over a hundred hours. Probably about 20 hours in the past 4 days trying to find the proper settings, playing mostly on 4 sens/2 accl/0 both deadzones. I guess Ill try moving up to 5 sens. Admittedly, it feels better when i switch to 5 sens (I played around with it a bit), but my aim is much worse. Im gonna stick with 5 sens for a while, see if that at least mostly solves it. But playing at 4 sens/2 accl definitely left a lot to be missed in terms of smooth aiming comparable to other Halos.
The aiming in this game is very weird. It feels like small adjustments are very sluggish and and large one’s are too fast. I played Reach yesterday and the aiming felt much more uniform (It actually felt better despite the shift to 30fps). For now, try 3-4 Sens and 2 Look Acceleration (Not sure about deadzones) and see how it feels.
Also, you may be experiencing input lag from your TV. This would effect all games uniformly, but it certainly isn’t helping the game’s wonky aiming.
EDIT: Didn’t realize those were your current settings

Need I reiterate the obvious and previously stated?? I’ve played past Halos and never had a similar issue, the aiming feels like -Yoink- at times and it is definitely not on me because there is a clear and definitive difference between when the aiming feels smooth and when it feels clunky. No idea why this happens, but it definitely does.

Awesome, I never knew such a thing existed. Will definitely check this out, thanks a ton.

Yea I was playing MCC the other day, feels 10x better.
Disregard the title of the vid, cause that’s not the point of me posting this vid nor is it my vid either. Just to share some thoughts I have and what has begun to help me even more than just the update we got to our aiming UI options
Pay very close attention to when this guy mentions magnetism. He isn’t talking about bullet magnetism in this case, he’s basically talking about aim assist I presume but he is using that term literally. Your reticle will sort of snap to a player when you aim at them. The magnetism “circle”, when near the opponent will provide assistance and track your opponent while he or she strafes. So basically, this is the game helping you out. This is where your left thumbstick comes in hand, as you follow your opponent plus the aim assist, you don’t have to use too much effort to stay on target. Spartans move pretty fast in h5, but it’s all too often our right thumb just goes crazy off target it seems and panicks the player to lose the dual.
Lots of people say h5 has less aim assist, but honestly it feels that it varies between weapons. This is also what causes players to feel that they are…sorta “fighting” against the game to aim, as if the game is trying to aim for them.
Halo is all about strafe duals. Any veteran Player will tell you that most of your aim comes from your left analog stick, not your right stick. Your right stick is used primarily for small adjustments. What causes a player to “over” aim is the player putting too much effort into the right stick and slipping in and out of the magnetism cone of aim assist. I’m not saying h5 has a -Yoink- ton of aim assist, but I am saying in h5 it feels different than other halos.
I’m not a beast at this game, but I’ve messed with the settings a lot, tried tons of variations, but in the end it is the feel of how aim assist works in h5 that I had to adapt to.

I mean did anyone ever complain about the control feel in any other titles? I just don’t agree with their rational for changing things up as they did. There is 10+ years worth of muscle memory for a lot of us and the mechanic changes to me just feel very slippery. I never feel confident in any engagement to the point that I don’t try and lone wolf anything anymore. I’ve not played in almost a month and honestly I doubt I’ll be back anytime soon, not that anyone care. I have better things to do with my time than to fight with the controls and be frustrated with a game. With that being said, I’m envious of those that don’t have my problems.
Honestly in my experience if you are bad at aiming like I was go play swat it helps your twitch reflex and aiming under pressure, helped tons for me brought my kd up by at least 0.2 in about a week. Plus you can get a really good feeling when you go 28 kills and only 9 deaths.
