How long is the timer on the sticky detonator? Is there one at all? I ask because I’m curious if I could stick a ghost, banshee, or warthog before I jump in and then detonate in the event that I get hijacked.
I think the sticky detonator automatically explodes after around 15-20 seconds (not 100%sure of the time but I know it does detonate after a short amount of time).

Utilizing this method with a mongoose can make a rather interesting IED. Found this out a while ago. Shoot the sticky device on a part of the mongoose that won’t be noticable and drive toward your opponent, trying to ram into them. Works great on dealing damage to heavy vehicles, especially if a Wraith thrusts at you
. It’s evil, yet effective if you don’t have any other effective methods to getting close to a heavy vehicle wreaking havoc.
Utilizing it however the way you want to can cause issues (Flipping your vehicle, damage to yourself, etc) due to what Phil Mitchell62 said with the 15-20 second fuse. You can try your method if you would like a unique way of earning points/kills . In my opinion, I think it’s a fun way to troll your opponent if you can pull it off successfully.
Edit: You can shoot the vehicle with the Detonator without driving it and hope that somebody will take it. You’ll be surprised how desperate people can be for a vehicle at times and tune out the detonator beep sound.
I would never, in the right mind, try that with any vehicle I have ever used. Ever. That beeping would be my death bells, and the stickybomb my reaper.
But, then again, I only get into about 4 vehicles, and all of those can take a few stickybombs (Mantis, Scorpion, Warthog, Banshee). All of these are also hard to hijack in some ways (Mostly, they either fly or have a massive “Kill everything” range). So I can’t see the value in a post-death IED.
You have to figure, the time to accurately line up the detonator is 4 seconds. the driving to the enemy takes 5-10 seconds. The hijacking animation takes 3. This leaves you with, at best, about 3 seconds to get out of the blast-While you are slowed down, shieldless and likely getting hosed down by weapons fire. It’s probably the riskiest, and in my opinion useless, tactics, only for the reckless, “Brave”, or stupid.

Never hurts to be open-minded and have a set of options available. I can honestly say that I have seen a lot of players whose only form of strategy is ‘Spray and Pray’, or ‘Shoot everything with a Battle Rifle’ and resort to continue to use it, even if it is not working at all. Ever been in a Team Slayer game, where your other three (or seven for big team) team mates keep running at a tank or ghost just shooting with an assault rifle and whipping grenades rampantly without aiming them and keeps ‘giving the enemy team free kills’ in doing so?
Nice trick… the timer is much more than 15-20 secs, I gues is more like 30 to 40 secs.
I understand the importance of tactical, and strategic, flexibility, better than most. But there is a thick line between combat effectiveness/efficiency, and combat blunder. A sticky Detonator IED is unfortunately outside of the realm of long-term usefulness. Look at it from a cost/benefit analysis;
Cost; 1 Vehicle, (50/50 at best odds) 1 life, 1 Sticky Detonator.
Benefit; 1-2 kills.
Meanwhile, going out with the intent of killing people with the vehicle or going for the objective in the same vehicle can easily net a higher long-term yield. 1 flag, or 5 kills. See? Efficiency and effectiveness. While using things outside of original planned usage can lead to a higher combat value (For example, the Covenant Wraith Tank was designed as an artillery tank, but it ended up being incredibly effective as a close-range siege machine. The UNSC Mantis is designed as an offensive vehicle, but fairs far better as a defensive machine. Have you seen the number of destroyed Mantises on Ragnarok? All because the pilot tried to go on the offensive), this is the exception as opposed to the norm.
The Sticky Detonator is much more single-function than either of those vehicles, or the Grenade Launcher that preceded it. It operates best as a flag defense tool, or a weapon of area denial. While it can be used to destroy a vehicle that an enemy is piloting, it’s better if you never set foot into that same vehicle to let yourself get hijacked, and just wait for an unwary enemy to detonate it when they jump in.
And on another note, shooting everything with the BR isn’t a bad strategy, provided the wielder knows how to aim well. The AR spray and pray can also function as an effective distraction, as can idiot teammates.

Well, I can honestly say then we have experienced different gameplay online, lol. As for the Mantis, I try not to use it for the reasons you stated above; I agree with you 100 percent on that. I jus tlike having options available, and if I’m playing custom games, it’ s nice to have a laugh here and there by doing something abnormal, like the mongoose IED.
