I plan on purchasing this game separately from the HW2 version. Which version should I get?
I would think the Steam version would have a larger population due to the fact that it does not require Windows 10 to be played.

It is moddable, but not as much and also but far more difficult. 99% of people won’t even be able to do it with the Store version so Steam is basically the only version.

Bought the Steam version. Happily i might add.
Get the steam version, but there are steam fourms so if you play that version, post on the halo wars forum on steam

As i see, Steam version is populated so you won´t find much trouble. Meanwhile WIN10 version you have the Xbox Play Anywhere feature to play on PC or Xbox, so you can play with PC users or Xbox users just paying once but not with both of them because there is not cross-play.
If i know it was coming to steam i would never bought the expensive hw2 with this one included ;s

Seriously, finding games in it is difficult. I’ve given up searching for online games. Now I just play skirmish with bots using a mod.
I would probably go with Steam because I have most of my PC games from there already. It is however annoying that the Steam version has no cross-play I have a few friends that own the Xbox One version. By disabling cross-play on Steam 343 has divided the already small community that plays Halo Wars. ๏̯͡๏
I’d say Steam because the Windows Store has a lot of software issues and I would assume Steam has a higher population.
