Steady Aim

How the how are opponents able to kill me with a few shots, while jumping(!) as I seemingly empty a clip into them with virtually no damage? My KD is like 0.11. There has got to be a secret to improving my kill chances!

A lot of us just naturally have that skill (no secret, just precision gained from years of playing) from playing Halo so much. I along with many others have been playing since CE for the Original Xbox or PC so we have the hang of it. One major tip I can offer is to find the right sensitivity first to help you land your shots and check your recent players list to make sure you aren’t paired against others who live out of your country as this could cause lag comp to kick in heavy (I miss my Good connection filer).

Your look sensitivity plays a large role in how well you play. For me in play on 10 sensitivity which to me is slow.I even play CoD with 10 sensitivity even while sniping.Though i have played on the maximum sensitivity for every game i play, but that is because i can handle it.

My suggestion is do Spartan Ops on normal by yourself and experiment with different sensitivity’s and when you can headshot 10 grunts/crawlers with 10 shots you know your ready. The elites in spartan ops on normal take about the same to kill with a BR as a player in multiplayer does, so they are excellent practice due to there sudden sidestepping.

Spartan Ops is the best practice ground for aiming, so i highly suggest spending some time doing that. Then before you go into multiplayer play a few missions in spartan ops to warm up each time. That will ensure the best results almost every time.Remember to play by yourself on normal, that way you gain a higher awareness. With other people to rely on your ability to react correctly in dire situations can get dull.

That is my suggestion to becoming a better shot. That and use the BR, trust me you will do a lot better once you master old faithful.

Back in the days of Halo 3 I used to practice a lot in custom games just moving crazy and staying on target. I suggest doing this with a friend. Also another great tip is to get used to a sensitivity that works for you. I used to be on 7 in Halo 2 and gradually advanced to 10 over the years as I got more ND more used to it.

Hope that helps.

Umm, sensitivity setting? I had no idea such a thing existed on here. Thanks for the input. I know I’m embarrassing myself but more importantly letting the team down. I want to learn, but the curve is a LOT steeper than I thought!

Btw, Id already switched to the BR. Everytime I tried scoping with the DMR, I got killed. I need some people to practice who aren’t massively better than me, LOL.

Depends. If you want fun practice that just keeps you muscles moving… Try this. Fun with 2-5 players http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqFPS46-18o

Serious practice 1v1 only works if you can find someone with equal skill. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKPdm5ObJKE

Also if you use the DMR, which is very OP, try not to scope in unless they are well out of range. It is much easier to land short to mid-range shots while not scoped in, and try to aim towards the top of the head. The hit box is centered more towards the top.

Since your shots aren’t very good I’d recommend playing on a low sensitivity as it will minimize your mistakes. A high sensitivity doesn’t correlate with player skill either; most pros play on 3 (default) or 4 sensitivity.

It’s all about headshots. You can hit someone in the body until your face turns blue. Nine times out of ten, you’ll be dead.

I could help you out if you want. I sent you a PM. Check your inbox.

Gun skill can only get you so far in this game. Besides, the DMR is so magnetic anyone can use it. You need to be smart too. My advice is to be calm and patient, let the enemies be aggressive as it will often get them killed, and always think what that enemy may be doing and try to counter-act it. For example, notice the other player with an automatic trying to get close to you? Distance + precision weapon is key. Notice a player with Hammer round a corner waiting for you to be aggressive? Fake him out so you have space and time to shoot. Also, so many players are Pacman in this game like CoD and will chase dots. Use this fact to your advantage e.g. pretend to run away from a dude who only landed one shot on you, round a corner only to stop and turn around, pull out that shotgun and blast him away.

Remember too: teamwork. Don’t be afraid to tank for someone else, or leave that risky one shot to your team mate if it keeps you alive. There is a video on youtube of Walshy and Strongside (two of the best Halo 2 players) in a team doubles match narrowly winning, but you will often observe them running away like -Yoink- to their team mate if they have been outgunned or ambushed. They are not God and use their brains most of the time to win. They know when they can win a fight, and when they can’t.

The shield in Halo is what makes me prefer this over other shooters like CoD. You have time to react and plan accordingly, and come out on top if you are smarter.

Octagon is a huge help in terms of aiming.

If you’d like to play some octagon, I’ll send you a PM with my gamertag and you can message me on XBOX LIVE if you’re interested.

If you’re wondering what octagon is, it’s a small Octagnal shaped map, with no cover. It has instant spawns, and you play with a BR/DMR and a Sniper Rifle.

15 minutes of play, and it’s a great way to increase your aim, find which sensitivity works for you, and improve your strafing abilities.

It has nothing to do with sensitivity and everything to do with accuracy and map position. I play on the default settings and the recon conttoller settings. The only time you should change your sensitivity is if you find yourself saying all the time, “-Yoink!- I wish I could of turned faster to hit him”, but I mean ALL the time. Default is more then enough for 90% of the population.

One thing new people need to learn is how many body shots each weapon takes to break shields. Each weapon is different, but once you see the shield crack (you see the player with a yellow glow to them) its time for the headshot. Another body shot will not kill them, but a headshot is instant death.

If you find yourself alway dying, you’re probably in the open. Stick to the rim of the map so the action is always in front of you, look into the center and shoot in. This keeps everything in you FoV and you don’t have to worry about people shooting you from behind. This is a huge plus for beginners. Move slowly and if you’re getting hit, look for quick cover, don’t run away. Running away will get you killed more then likey, so keep quick cover in mind.

Just remember that this game is not a twitch shooter and it will take some time to get used to. If you keep at it you will get better over time. Don’t give up because this game is one of the best FPS you’ll ever play. Yes, it has it’s problems, but it’s nothing that can’t be fixed. I’ve been playing halo since CE and it’s really the only shooter I enjoy playing. Just play and have fun.

Send me a message over Live some time, I can teach you a lot about weapons, strategies, and in game mechanics. My gamertag is the same as my username here.

First of all you should play and finish Campaign solo, on easy, then on normal. You’ll be surprised how many things it’ll teach you. It won’t make you better strategic against people, but it’ll force you to learn some basic manual skills. It takes practice to kill shielded Jackal in 2 shots (first in bare hand, second in the head). When you learn that, you should be able to do headshots online.

Second, if you’re not good with precission rifles, you should start with automatic weapons. My gf was 100% noob too when she started using Suppressor. It’s most effective up close so you should try killing people from few meters, where aiming isn’t THAT important. Then you can try to take more distance, using AR. After that another 10-20 meters and BR.

Third, Halo is about teamworking. It’s not CoD where you are able to kill half on enemy’s team in seconds. Always follow other players, and try never to be in the first line of fire.

Interesting points and i appreciate the comments. Just to clarify, I’ve played thru campaign on Easy, Normal and Heroic so far. The AI movements are predictable compared to human players, so I was actually doing pretty well. Once I tried LIVE however, that quickly changed. I’m even looking thru recorded footage, gun cams, whatever to see what’s wrong. On my side, it looks like I’m plastering my target, but the replay shows bullets going very low or to the side. This doesn’t make sense. Last night i kept spawning in front of the other team. Spawn, die, watch everyone run around, repeat. Being matched with MLGs helps nobody. I did finally find one guy who would fire 1 or 2 shots then go past me - he knew i wouldnt really threaten him. I respect that. Btw, I’ve never played CoD. Any version.

I see your K/D is now 0.24. I would say that’s 100% improvement in less than a month. Keep it up.

Not to be rude but this is why we need a better ranking system. He clearly is in the stage or learning and you can’t learn against players that hare just that much better. It only makes you frustrated.

Improvement yes, but still nowhere close to where I should be. I don’t think I’ve had a game yet where I went positive so it’s pretty frustrating. The other night I got absolutely clobbered by 2 guys, 0-32! It was completely unsportsmanlike. I’ve been working with all the suggestions so far, but I’m about ready to kill my account. Mathematically, it would now take forever and a day to get above 1.00. Too many deaths. Does lag come into play? Can players hack or use cheats to disable your armor abilities or misdirect shots?
