Standby in Halo 4?

Have any of you been standby’d in halo 4? I’ve never experienced it, nor do I really know what it actually is. I only know kind of what happens because my bf has been playing halo for years and it’s happened to him several times.

Anyways, here’s what happened:
I got into CTF infinity challenge on Rangnarok. My team spawns, yet only two of us can actually move around/do anything. The other two are just standing there and on the scoreboard it has the little circle thing that usually means someone is re spawning. The entire other team has the same thing going on. So, i head towards their base to see if anyone is there. On the way there my camo glitched up and i had camo even though i hadn’t turned my camo on. After that I run up and grab their flag and the next thing i know i’m getting sniped. Oddly enough, the place where i had camo is the SAME DIRECTION I GOT SHOT FROM. After i got sniped i couldn’t respawn and all I could do is watch my team mates. There is one guy on the scoreboard with 30 points (for killing me when i had his team’s flag). If you want proof go to my file share ADVENT FAITH and download the clip "Kainx53 standby?’

If this is someone tinkering with the connection, is there anything I can do to get this person punished?

Also, the game isn’t in my history nor anyone else’s as far as I can tell. He also doesn’t have any games today even though he’s played matches (i’ve been looking at his profile)
Thanks for any help

Well there no way to tell whos host, like in Halo 2 and 3 there were ways.

So, its probably just a REALLY Bad connection.

I myself run a 2mb connection from -Yoink!- Mobile Phone, But when I hit my 2 gig Data Cap, my speeds are lowered to 256k

And Ive had a few matches like this, but when im not host, everything plays fine

Imagine what people are like in different countries, theyre experiencing lag like this 10 fold

It happened to me numerous times in Halo 3.

I don’t know if it’s someone tinkering with the connection. I usually just blamed it on lag/bad connection/bad host (though I have no real understanding of any of those :P) and quit the game or waited for it to be resolved itself. I never paid it much attention.

How in God’s green earth are you actually using a hotspot to play Halo?!

sigh

I doubt it was just bad lag. I’ve seen bad lag, and this was much worse.
I forgot to add that when i went to theater, i flew to the other teams base and their sniper wasn’t there at the beginning of the game (after i spawned) but somehow i still got sniped. Not one person on the other team had spawned atleast i couldnt see them anywhere on the map and when i got sniped that guy got points from it…which makes me think he was tinkering with the connection.

Just curious, how could you tell who the host was in Halo 3?

> And Ive had a few matches like this, but when im not host, everything plays fine

I thought it was advantageous to be the host? (Evidently I have no understanding of the host system)

I’m from Europe and I frequently get matched up against Americans in 3, Reach and 4. There has always been some degree of lag for me but since I never experienced the games without it, I just got used to it.

Actually, they probably mean 2MB, not 2Mb. I myself have seen 4G Verizon Wireless devices that are faster than Time Warner Cable, so it’s totally possible. Would I play Halo on a Wireless connection? Hell no- but that’s MY preference. As a matter of fact, I won’t play any video games on any platform wirelessly, unless that’s the only way to do so. Anywho, if they have a rock-solid Wifi connection to their phone/hotspot, then there’s no reason not to use it.

Anywho, as for “getting 'standby-ed,” yes, I have had it happen in Halo 4, but only once, about 3 weeks after it came out. It was on Adrift, and we were getting close to the end of the game, and were up by 4 or 5 kills- I forget. All of a sudden, it goes to the “selecting new host” screen, and every once in a while, the screen would flash and the scores would change. When we regained control of our Spartans, we were down by 6 kills, and ended up losing the game shortly thereafter. Awesome.

Stuff like this is equivalent to rage quitting in my opinion, and that used to really irritate the -Yoink- out of me- especially in Online Ranked Matches on various fighting games. But, I eventually just stopped caring altogether- I figure that, if someone has to cheat or abuse an exploit to win, or they decide to quit early because they’re getting destroyed, then I already won long before the game was over. They might be at home laughing that they screwed me over, but I could care less; I know who really won. Besides, no one gives a flying -Yoink- what your Online Stats are- go to events/tournaments and make a name for yourself. If you can’t do it in person while under pressure, then you really are as insignificant as your padded stats.

The thing I DON’T understand, are the people who cheat ALL the time. Does it make them feel better about the fact that they suck? Do they enjoy -Yoink!- people off for no reason at all? And is their e-peen REALLY that important to them? Are they afraid of not being accepted? Or did they grow up getting bullied by the “cool kids,” and so they assume that’s what they have to do to be cool? I just don’t get it. There is practically NOTHING to gain by being an “Innarwebz Tough Guy” / “Griefer.”

They should know by now that cheating is so highly expected that even the pros that ARE amazing at various video games are called out as possible frauds. Hell, I get told I’m cheating every once in a while, and I don’t consider myself great by ANY means. Then, there’s the various people who have raged after losing to me fighting game, and typically their complaint would show that either A. They truly don’t understand the game, or B. The thing they are complaining about is just common sense (which also reinforces A.) For example (for people who play / have played ANY Street Fighter since SF2): on multiple occasions, after beating some Zangief players in various iterations of SF, they’d send me a message telling me that I was “turtling” the whole match. Oh, I’m sorry, you’re absolutely right- the proper way to play against him is to rush him down and stay right on top of him the whole match. What was I thinking? /facedesk

Well, I’ve already written WAY more than I expected to during my “breaks” over the last few hours, so I’ll just repeat this one thing: if someone has to cheat, grief, abuse an exploit, rage quit, call you names, etc. while playing a game, it’s almost always out of jealousy and/or being salty. Pass the Morton’s.

Honestly I wouldn’t know why anyone would need to standby in Halo 4. there is no ranked or arena. Standbying was only really used in Ranked Halo 3 and The Arena in Reach by bk’s.

If anyone standby’s and manipulates in Halo 4, they truly need to get better at the game or a quite sad indeed.

bad lag and a glitch in the jip process
red team on exile, we got the gauss hog first, also got the tank into position and the blue team was absolutely obliterated 1000-260, (not the worst i’ve seen)

That sounds like it very well may be some sort of network manipulation, although if it were you would think that the host would have a lot more kills, unless he or she were trying to mask it. A lot of people assume that someone is sitting next to their router with a switch soldered to the ethernet cable running to their Xbox. Unless the cheater is completely incompetent, this will never be the case.

There was a method used in good old halo 2 (the best of the series in my opinion) called team standby. I won’t get too detailed, but they would basically route their internet connection through their computer before it reached the Xbox. All packets going to and from other players in the game could be monitored and controlled with certain firewall software. If the player got host, and there were numerous ways of getting it pretty often, they could use automated software to turn the firewall on and off. If the interval was too long, many players would blue-screen and would often never spawn again for the rest of the match. Another thing that could happen is everyone would lag out of the game. If the interval were too short, lag would be minimal and probably not even hamper gameplay. The desired effect was to make everyone lag so terribly that they would be able to wander into walls for the rest of the game, at best. Since the host had absolute control, he could choose who did and did not receive this crippling lag (I will not explain how).

Many people used the same setup that I mentioned above, but only to ensure that they got host every game. While a lot of people might consider this cheating as well, it ensured that nobody could attempt to manipulate the connection. Another advantage was that if there were any modders, the host could simply deny them connection to the game (again I won’t be too specific) and they would lag out.

I tried to be as vague as possible, so that not only will it be easier to understand, but also so nobody that doesn’t already know how to do it will get any bright ideas.

I had heard that this was adapted to work with Halo 3, although it may have just been rumors. I don’t know how it factors into Reach or Halo 4, but I would definitely not find it surprising if it were updated to work similarly. I’m not sure why anyone would bother cheating, considering how levels don’t mean anything anymore. Everyone can unlock absolutely everything eventually, it will just take longer for some than others. Spartan Ops is also much faster xp than Wargames, especially with double xp.

Whether or not the individual is attempting to cheat, the host will almost never have any lag. Problems arise when the host’s network isn’t fast enough to handle all of the players that are connected to his or her game. Many times people will assume that someone is cheating just because they are lagging and the host is not, but this is to be expected if the host has a slow connection. With all of this being said, you should take any lag with a grain of salt. I hope that I made it easier to distinguish between regular old lag and network manipulation.

I just wish that I knew more about how Halo 4 responds to lag. If I did I could be more helpful on what to look for in determining what is cheating and what isn’t. I don’t play Wargames because I don’t see any reason to. One misconception I see even in this thread is that cheaters cheat because they are bad, this is not always the case, although I met many self-proclaimed modders/team standbyers in Halo 2 that were terrible at the game. Some people just don’t want to deal with campers, or the stress of putting in effort. Some even made money doing it. You would be surprised how many people will pay someone for easy levels in a video game. Anyone, regardless of skill level, age, or motive, could be cheating.

Personally, I have less of a problem with cheaters than I do with campers, or people that use overpowered super weapons. At least one group admits that they have an unfair and unskilled advantage.

I have seen videos of standby in H4. It does and can happen but not very often. I have a video in my file share of a guy in the top ten infinity challange, on his second tag and he or someone on his team used standby to win the CTF game.
