I agree that there was some flaws in-regards to some of the thinking, but I don’t think it was all poorly thought out.
The method of earning Spartan Points in-game and in turn player XP was fine IMO, but the manner in which Spartan Ranks was made an addition to the game was pretty stupid. Publicly visible Spartan Ranks are quite inconsequential in Halo 4, but they’ve ultimately become the de facto method for indicating one’s time and dedication toward the game on top of being a simple visual aid which relates a player’s progression through the character specializations; the specialization progression is pretty much useless information publicly. I thought Halo: Reach’s experience rankings were a million times better and definitely much more accurate for indicating a player’s total experience and dedication toward the game, plus for giving purpose and relevance to the daily, weekly, and monthly challenges. To be honest, I hope that an experience ranking system like Reach’s returns in future titles to be paired with a playlist skill ranking system (CSR). Now as far as I’m concerned 343i can keep the specialization progression if they wish, but just hide it from being publicly visible since it only serves to indicate a player’s personal progression through the character specializations which again means very little to other players.
IMO, the Playlist Competitive Skill Rankings (CSR) is important; though, there are certainly some things that I’d like to see done differently with them going forward. Firstly and most importantly, a CSR system needs to be ready at release, not implemented months later; secondly, it should act as a fluid utilitarian diagnostic tool rather than being a blend of accumulated playlist experience in a progression manner combined with a skill indicating metric which together unfortunately influences and mucks with the MMing search process (these were problems w/ the competitive skill ranks of H2, H3, and H4). To be honest, Microsoft’s TrueSkill system already provides a very ideal metric for the MMing search system so there’s no need to have CSRs factor into the search process; instead simply give players an option to prioritize their search parameters based on their preferences for closer skill pairings (per Microsoft’s TrueSkill ranks), a better connection, or quick searches (default)… similar to Reach.
Also, as for whether or not to make CSR visible in-game – I’d personally like to see it introduced in-game but in a heavily restricted manner. I think a player should have access to all of their own playlist skill rankings through their combat records, but only them and the only time I think a player’s ranks should be visible to other players in-game is after a match is completed. I believe the post game statistics menu/report system is the ideal time to publicly display player CSRs in-game and only for that particular playlist. This way the negative aspects of making CSRs visible in-game are curbed drastically while still providing the positive aspects. Plus, if someone was curious to research a player’s full spectrum of skill ranks, including their highest rank, the Waypoint remains a proper destination to do so which hopefully will work with the smartglass technology for Halo 4 and the future titles.
Finally, completely do away with using credits or tokens to purchase/unlock the combat related stuff in-game; it’s incredibly annoying and it obviously creates a disadvantage toward newer players in an unfair manner. Simply put, anything that’s combat related should be available for everyone right from the start, while simply unlocking customization options that are decorative only, and maybe even additional custom class slots, should be tied into a player’s lifetime accommodation progressions and overall experience progressions. IMO, this is where Halo 4 does get some of the customization unlocking partially right while also getting some of it as completely wrong as they could have.
As for Halo 4, since it’s too late to make any dramatic changes in accord to what I typed out above I guess extending the specialization ranks (SR) is one way to make the daily, weekly, and monthly challenges at least a bit more relevant and to give a little extra purpose to some players who enjoy having something to work on.
