Squad controls discussion

Would you like Squad Controls to return in Infinite? If so, what game would you recommend 343 use as inspiration?

Although it received a mixed reception in Halo 5 due to the AI issues, I think 343 pulled it off reasonably well and I hope it is further developed in Infinite.

If 343 is going to to expand Sqaud controls in Infinite, I would prefer that they use Republic Commando’s squad command system as the foundation, as it allowed the squad to be used tactically without need micromanagement.

Absolutely not. It adds unecessary complexity to the game.

I would prefer they not return, or any squad type situations. I am hoping Halo Infinite will return us just being Master Chief participating in these large battles with marines, mixed in with some solo sections.

Speaking of Republic Commando… Tim Longo (creative director for Halo 5) previously worked on Republic Commando. So you can see where the idea for squad mechanics may have come from for Halo 5. Neat!

Do you mean something similar to Reach’s fireteams? Such as, a group of MarMarnines would follow you around and provide support but not be directly under you command?

My main reason for wanting squad controls to return is that, with the possible of Infinite being an open-world game, being able to command a squad would add more depth and allow for a more tactical experience.

I would rather not. the only feature I was fine with about that was the option to tell your squad what to shoot. besides, squad controls imply that you would have a squad with you through out the entire game which I really don’t like. every halo before halo 5 had some solo missions or atleast large portions of the mission on your own which I think helps the games atmosphere. also, under no circumstances do I ever want to see that revive mechanic returning.

Sorry, I was referring to Halo 5’s command system for your A.I. squad-mates. The Reach system didn’t seem like it seem like it impacted gameplay in either a good or bad direction too much, so I didn’t mind it. I think Halo 5’s squad commands are silly.

To be clear I’m not saying saying it couldn’t be interesting if done correctly, but if it’s a detriment I would rather it not be in the game, and I would prefer Halo 5’s system not return.

Maybe in certain missions, but not throughout the game. My reason being is I liked the squad mechanics in Halo 5 but I didn’t like being in a squad the whole game, I like there to be solo missions as well. But if we encounter a group of marines or spartans, I’d like to be able to command them to focus fire on an enemy.

Really hope it doesn’t return. The team was next to useless. Though I hope blue team is still in the game to an extent.

I liked how the squad mechanics functioned in halo 5, the teammate AI could be better though. definitely think the squad should stay since it doesnt make much sense for chief to be seperated from his squad especially now that they’ve been introduced in the games.

I hope they keep Squad Controls in some form.

As I said in my OP, I thought it was implemented quite successfully and it’d be a shame to pass on the opportunity to build on what they created for Halo 5.

Eh,I don’t really care if it comes back or not.I’ll be fine as long as fireteams return with better AIs.

I agree with you, OP. Halo 5 pulled it off reasonably well. The mechanics themselves were fine from a player perspective, but they didn’t put enough development time into the squad AI so it didn’t work well. If it makes a return for Infinite, I’d prefer the mechanics to work the same way but with good AI.

No, i don’t want then to return,it doesn’t belong in a halo game.

Improvements needed to the h5 system…

Remove ‘pick up that weapon’ because the ai are stupid and always swap already good weapons while tanaka keeps running round with ARs. Can we just swap weapons with ai like we used to. At least that way they get the weapons we want them to have.

Revive is fine when playing solo, but when playing co op I think it should still be ‘respawn after combat’

That was very frustrating, particularly on the harder difficulties. A better system would have been to allow the player to choose what teammate could pick up the weapon, instead of relying on the AI guessing correctly.

The Revive option was ok, imo, but 343 needed to make the AI more intelligent when choosing when they could revive you.

For example, the squad in Republic Commando would only revive you if the vicinty was clear of enemies. “Hold onto your guts while rip out theirs!” - Sev 07

In contrast, the H5 squad will try to revive you no matter what.:joy:

I didn’t like the squad controls, it was only added because in halo 5, weak health, they need to increase chiefs health, if they add squad controls, it just makes it a bit easier and it lacked with the game play. Chief is meant to be stronger than other Spartans, he doesn’t need to always be with blue team.
