Sprint

Am I the only one that does not give a flying -Yoink- about ‘competitive Halo’? That’s the biggest argument I’ve seen when it comes to people’s opinions on having sprint in Halo, that it ‘ruins’ competitive Halo. Give me a break. The vast majority of people don’t give a crap about competitive Halo. We want to enjoy ourselves by playing a fun game. I’ve played every Halo game ever released, and enjoyed them all. However, after spending quite a bit of time playing Reach and only using the Sprint Armor Ability because everything else just felt slow as hell, I realized that Sprint isn’t such a bad thing. Then I played Halo 4, a lot. Not as much as I’d played Halo 3 or Reach, but still I played it quite a bit. Then I tried going back to Halo 3 for nostalgia’s sake. I felt like I was walking under water. It was pathetically slow paced in comparison. I’d prefer not to go back to that. I think it’s a step in the wrong direction. I will be gravely disappointed if the feature isn’t in the new game.

I don’t care about grifball or BTB, but that doesn’t mean either should be marginalized.

And the vast majority don’t care about forge or theatre or grifball. Yet all of which are important to the franchise in their own regard, just as competitive Halo is.

Alright, so A:

You do not speak for the vast majority of players. Each player speaks only for themselves unless directly promoted as a representitive by other people. You can say that other people have similar views and that you know there is a backing, but don’t think that you speak for “the majority”.

B:

Sprint has no real affect on the pace of the game. The average size of the maps increase the faster the faster you can move. You are only getting to any location as fast as the map maker intends you to. Hence there are no small maps such as Guardian or Midship in Halo’s Reach or 4.

That’s not to say maps are scaled larger (Ragnarok and Pitfall appear to be the same size as their original counterparts), but the average map size for 4v4 is larger than before.

C:

Halo 3 is arguably the slowest title of the series. Did Halo CE on Wizard or Chill Out ever feel particularly slow? Or Halo 2 on Lockout and Midship?

I’d reckon that the average 4v4 game on Halo 2 Midship (were you to add instant respawns like Halo 4) would feel roughly the same (and more than likely faster) than the average 4v4 game on Halo 4’s Haven. Would be worth a test once MCC releases.

D:

The main problem with sprint isn’t so much that it “breaks competitive games” but causes a disconnect between movement and combat (among other things). You can’t shoot while sprinting, which means you can’t fight while moving at your maximum speed.

Jumps on the maps (especially Haven) are tailored to sprint. Which means you can’t use those jumps in combat, and you can only perform the jumps while moving forward. The jumping and one’s ability to move around fluidly in combat is butchered. Especially if maps have to be made that the cover is far enough apart that you can’t just sprint from cover to cover without getting shot.

You are forced to choose whether or not to take full advantage of your speed and risk getting caught with your gun down or move slowly but combat ready and risk giving map or power weapon control to the other players.

There are also map design related issues that can arise which I don’t particularly care to delve into.

The main point is that sprint limits the options a player has during combat all for the point of “feeling” faster. There are other ways to accomplish this without causing the above problems, such as an increase in FOV and base movement speed.

A default thruster pack would even be a better solution (so long as you can sprint while using it), as it can be used in any direction.
