Sprint: The Real Problem with Reach and 4

I remember when Bungie first came out with Halo: CE they explicitly said they wanted to make a medium-paced shooter. All of the shooters before Halo – Quake, Doom, etc. – had all been very fast paced. And there is a simple problem with fast-paced shooters…they’re frustrating. The moment you kill someone, someone else zooms into kill you. The game becomes a big mess: no map control, no strategy, just people running around at top speed…because they have to! In Halo2 and Halo3 I used to get killing sprees, killing frenzies, triple kills, overkills, etc. ALL THE TIME. Not anymore! Why? Because the moment I kill someone three guys on the other team sprint in and shoot or grenade me to hell.

The problem is SPRINT. It has completely wrecked the GENIUS of Halo: CE, Halo2, and Halo3. The moment 343 industries figures this out, the sooner Halo will become fun again.

I still get sprees, frenzies and multikills often. Sprint definitely changes things a lot, but in my opinion it adds more depth and choice. No one is forcing you to use it, and you can still navigate slowly and deliberately around the map to get your kills.

I wouldn’t say it “wrecked” the game, but I certainly liked it better without sprint.

I respectfully disagree. While halo 4 is more fast paced than previous installments, it definitely hasn’t turned into a run-and-gun shooter. The fact that you can now sprint doesn’t change the fact you need to keep an eye on your motion tracker and tread carefully. I still manage to get plenty of sprees. However, if you’re really tired of enemies running up to you out of nowhere, try sticking with teammates or looking at your surroundings before getting into a firefight. Not to mention that the right armor ability/mod can change the battle to your favor. Just my opinion.

Variable movement is a huge improvement, I find it wonderful and it really shows off the Spartan’s speed. Sure it can be annoying but so can it when you can’t get out of tough situations in halo 3 when you couldn’t sprint

The game does kind of seem fast to me, but for me, it seems fast because of the fast kill times. I think sprint could contribute to the fastness of the game, but I’m not sure.
