Sprint Debate

Can 343i please explain the gameplay philosophy and the decision to include sprint, clamber and sliding in Halo Infinite? I know that the conversation about advanced mobility in Halo is a hot topic and I know that a lot of fans are against it but I’d be more interested in knowing how and why the studio decided to keep these mechanics attached to the player in the game. Can the studio elaborate on it’s design philosophy perhaps? I personally am not a fan of advanced mobility but I am open to understanding why these decisions are made. I know that not everybody can be 100% satisfied I just want to get a better understanding of these decisions.

Good point, even if they just say “we think the majority of players prefer sprint”, it would be nice to have an official answer. Of course, i like to think 343i had a deeper goal.

It makes exploration easier for players and gives them more options in terms of building engagements that can be tackled via different routes and options in a less visually restrictive and cinematic way.

The grappling hook also helps with that considerably.

Not having advanced movement in an open world style game would have been a very silly decision, in my honest opinion.

It would definitely be nice to hear from 343 and get some insight into their philosophy. I for one think the demo looked very fun even with the advanced movement. How it all translates to Infinite’s matchmaking is the real question.

Yeah, I’d probably wait until the multiplayer showcase. Hopefully they’ll answer a lot of our questions then.

Sprint has been here since Reach, it’s most likely gonna stay for the duration of Halos live cycle now. That particular debate apparently survived for 10 years…
Clamber? Well i like it! It’s pretty common to grab a ledge, when you wanna pull yourself up to a new height and let’s face it… It does not REALLY affect gameplay, unless you wanna nitpick on there needing to be a punishment for not timing your jump right.
Slide? Can be used to out maneuver opponents, can annoy me when an enemy player slides around a corner and BLASTS me away with a 12 gauge. Am i annoyed by it being in the game? No, it’s pretty darn useful, so i say leave it be.

All i am hoping is that the thrusters are gone, since that ability felt like an easy escape card but that’s my POV.

It‘s because people at 343 think that players cannot handle a game that does not allow you to sprint in todays gaming landscape, we know that since H5…

I would change that to clarify that 343 MISTAKENLY think that players cannot handle a game without sprint.

But, to expand upon what you said, here is the link to the portion of the GDC 2016 presentation where one of the devs blatantly points out that sprint was added to Halo 5 simply because the other popular shooters had it first.

Because sprint has now been in as many mainline halo games as it was not.

it is part of the series now, accept it.
