Spoilers: The Chiefs Plan

So I listened to the four part audiolog about the plan to trap Cortana for deletion and I was curious about peoples thoughts on this.

Did the Chief actually intend to take Cortana back to the Infinity for deletion? Which he refers to as an execution. Halsey challenges him on this and says they can always get Locke; at which point he insists he’ll do what’s needed. So he’s clearly conflicted about this, even after some pretty extreme actions post Halo 5.

Then when we get Cortanas perspective before she realises it’s Atriox, she doesn’t seem too concerned. Even asks “What’s the plan? Back to the Infinity for deletion?” As if she herself was pretty convinced it wasn’t going to go that way.

I reckon he wasn’t going to do it. If he gets Cortana out of the Domain she’s not a threat. In the previous two games he’s went against orders that involved killing her. Cortana herself didn’t kill Chief in Halo 5 because of their bond so would he?

Plus, it would make sense if the Chief had this idea and is prevented from doing this by Atriox. Which would add to the conflict between them and his failure. He had another chance to make things right and that almost ended in the Banished destroying the Galaxy with Halo.

John hoped he could talk sense to Cortana peacefully. He has always voiced out his regrets throughout the campaign that he couldn’t persuade her to stop or to save her. That was why Halsey was ready to swap him out with Locke as she doubted he could really do it when that time came.

I think he was ready to do what was necessary. Sure, he would try to persuade her otherwise, and do anything in his power, but from what we’ve seen from John, when it comes down to it, he’ll do what’s needed.

That’s demonstrated when he fulfills his duty in attempting to delete The Weapon. Yeah, they’re different constructs, but he’s going to do his duty and what is morally right if given the chance.

True, but if Cortana came to the conclusion on her own that she was wrong (overcome Logic Plague IMO) then, yeah the Chief could have convinced her both here and in Halo 5. Given that he considers that a failure of his when talking to the Weapon it probably would have been his intent.

I think Cortana was his mistake, so it was his duty to kill her. Atriox prevented him to do it
