I was just hoping for it to focus more on the forerunners especially after reading the Last Light book and the AI that’s in that story. Unfortunately, I felt the heavily used plot line (which I don’t hate) wasn’t executed well and could backfire (think ME3). I’m going to be cautiously optimistic that halo 6’s story will rectify my uneasy/unsatisfied feeling thus far.
I’m gonna re-post my opinion I made in another thread. Not trying to spam or anything just sharing my thoughts.
“Story wise? No. Is this meant to be about the Forerunners, the humans and the History they had or what? Imo this should not have been about Cortana, especially the way they made it. Making her the antagonist?. Halo CE-3 fighting the covenant and the mystery of the forerunners. Halo 3’s ending finally points us to the forerunners. Halo 4 picks up from there and introduces the forerunners. Halo 5 pretty much no forerunners to be seen and takes the story in a different direction. When the -Yoinking!- hell is this series just going to get on with it and go in depth with the Forerunners? Because Halo 5 did not focus on this at all, it was Cortana wanting some kind of AI uprising. Imo there’s no room for this kind of stuff, keep Cortana dead and let the story line get to where it’s supposed to. The forerunners. Their History etc etc. And what was all this “hunt the truth” and “ONI’s propaganda and cover ups” stuff about? Because none of that was reflected in the game. Yeah Chief defied an order and Locke was sent to bring him back. That’s it. This didn’t seem like some kind of “down fall” of Chief at all.Ugh this whole thing just seemed like a wasted opportunity to really get going to where it should be. There’s bigger fish to fry out there in the Halo Universe. Let’s just get to the Forerunner’s, Humanity/Ancient Humanity already and show us how all this story and lore is relevant in the present day in the Halo universe.”

> … Cortana made the comment about waking the Chief up in 10,000 years, my heart jumped a little. I’m excited to see how they handle her now; I doubt the Domain actually cured her rampancy, as it’s never been able to do that (even on Forerunner AI), so she’s either still rampant (albeit, stabilised), not actually her original self (one of her multiple personalities survived the end of Halo 4?) or suffering from the logic plague.
> That said, you can see just where it ties into the other games, and how much influence it drew from some of Bungie’s plans. What was originally planned for Halo: CE regarding Cortana, the Assembly in Halo: Reach and so on. Either way, exciting stuff.
My opinion. I don’t mind waiting three more years, so long as there’s other content (books, board games, comics, etc) to bridge the gap. Hey, at least we’re getting a ground-based version of Fleet Battles next year.

Those are good points. In the grand scheme of the Extended Universe’s main topics (Forerunner/Flood/Ancient Humans/Mantle etc.), I feel like after the game’s story ended we aren’t any farther along in the story arc. The only things from this game that could potentially move the overall story forward is are: Domain is still around and open (good to know), guardians are massive weapons of destruction, the AI that we ran into, and the forerunner world Genesis. Hopefully, they will expand on all those aspects next game.

Exactly. I doesn’t feel like we are any further into the story arc all that much. We have all this extended universe that was introduced out over the years regarding the Forerunners and Humanity and such, and the game has not taken this any further. All this Cortana carry on and this “face off” between Chief and Locke is just stalling the main meaning and purpose that has been focused on in the Halo universe for such a long time from moving forward. Making all this stuff in between, and making it as big as they did is completely unnecessary. And let’s face it, the hostility between Chief and Locke that was constantly thrown around and hyped up before release was no where near as serious in the game.
I feel we got nothing but plot devices (Geneses, Exuberant Witness etc) for the next game, but got nothing out of Halo 5 that has helped me discover more on what Halo’s universe is really all about.
