What was up with that bit where the Weapon absorbs a bit of data not long after you meet her?
The Weapon says this is a part of her, though she does not know how or why and then later it’s clarified that it contains part of what she used to trap Cortana. Which is why it has bits of the activation index in which Cortana had. Like it’s depicted as a pretty significant moment when she absorbs this. Which I thought would be a recurring thing as you encounter more of these memories.
Does the Activation Index ever get brought up again? I’ve played through the game once but some of its a blur.
But, how? I thought the whole point was that Cortana prevented the Weapons deletion so how could there be a partially deleted part of the Weapon and why would it have a chunk of what’s Cortanas memories and the Activation Index in it? I mean, it could be Halseys memory of the event as opposed to Cortana but presumably that brain was around the same time on Reach and we are told that she removed any memories of the Chief so she would not recognise him.
Is it just meant to clue you in, if it wasn’t apparent by the whole getting another Cortana model quote, that this is a copy of Cortana?
I mean it makes sense that, not knowing she was a clone of Cortana, that she would have mistaken chunks of Cortanas data for herself. But, is that the first time she’s done that since the place seemed to be full of that information. Doesn’t seem very safe to absorb chunks of somebodies memories like that.
Also doesn’t the Weapon say she was at the Silent Auditorium and that’s where she locked Cortana down? How would she have forgotten that if her deletion was prevented? If she was at the Silent Auditorium keeping Cortana locked down how was she left intact but Cortana destroyed?
I mean we never see a flashback of Cortana being captured or interacting with the Weapon.
Okay, Wildcard theory. Both of them got blown up and merged when the Silent Auditorium was destroyed. Cortana did genuinely change. However, she wants to go back to a simpler time so is pretending she died and is simply this new AI. It gives her the perfect excuse to turn a new leaf and it’s easier for everybody to accept her. However she is very much lying to the Chief about who she is and maybe even herself. So every time she absorbs these chunks it shows that the broken fragments of the Weapon and Cortana are all jumbled up.

I think it’s more of a hint to show her and Cortana are the same… Sort of. So maybe it’s a bit of Cortana that she absorbed but since she is her in essence, she thinks it’s her. Does this make sense?

See I thought it was obvious that she was a copy of Cortana. Pretty much everyone assumed that was the case and they start quoting that Halo 4 line out the gate. If you never played a previous Halo game, maybe, I don’t think it’s the full quote with the part about another Cortana. So perhaps in the story it’s treated as reveal which this scene would foreshadow.
It makes sense that she wouldn’t have been able to tell bits of herself from Cortana. But then, she does seem to make this distinction for all the Dust and Echoes but not this piece specifically? If she thought it was all her wouldn’t she just have been taking all of it in?
I just don’t get why she said it was the last part of herself she remembered being deleted and why any of her has been deleted anyway. If she was waiting for Chief to pick Cortana up, that never happens so she had no reason to activate her deletion and how could that have lined up with Cortana blowing up the ring? If she began deletion on locking Cortana down why did it take so long to complete and why move to a bomb proof shelter across the map? I am not really following this turn of events.
Plus it’s one of those “what just happened” moments when she absorbs the Index/Memory and is left visibly stunned. It’s quite dramatic for just picking up the Activation Index.
Since there seems to be a bit of time-traveling happening, it’s difficult to say what really happened. But after you pick up this stuff, it says something about “failsafe protocol initiated” which makes me think that this has something to do with the deletion process.
I mean Cortana sacrificed herself so… how did Weapon succeed in locking her down exactly?
Potentially, Cortana extracted the deletion process, or this failsafe mechanic to delete herself or something and stored it all the way over there.
No idea really, just assumptions that I put in my mind.

Possibly the Chief is the one activating the Failsafe Protocol because he was concerned about her absorbing bits of data. Just in case sort of thing.
Time travel possibly being a thing blows the story wide open in all sorts of ways.
I mean we never see the Weapon in any of the Flashbacks but she told us she was at the Silent Auditorium where she locked Cortana down…somehow. But then we find her miles away from the Auditorium at the start of a trail of memory breadcrumbs back to Cortana. I know, it’s a game, some dramatic license has to be used. But it’s a little odd.
