Splitscreen Co-op cancelled?

One of the saddest things I’ve heard about this game. A little personal story, sorry this is also my first post hoping 343 industries sees this so they can do it.

Since Halo Reach my father and I have always enjoyed playing the co-op campaigns together. Even while I was busy in school we found a way to complete Halo 4.
After getting Halo 5 for Christmas my freshman year of colIege was upset it did not have a co-op campaign . But that did not stop us from playing other games modes locally.
Now with Halo 5 I have been waiting almost a year to sit down with my old man to maybe play our last Halo game together. Hearing the news today broke my heart . This franchise has been a great bonding experience for my dad and I. We only have an Xbox 1 so we cannot have 2 Xboxes and 2 discs to play one game. Very upset by their decision.

Please reverse this decision 343.

I never actually post comments on anything. I know that it is never really worth it. My comment won’t make any difference to a “development schedule”, but I figured I would get one more number in for the stats.

I played every Halo game as it came out with a friend on local co-op campaign. That is just what you did. When Halo 5 came out and did not have that option I didn’t even realize it until after I bought the game. I ended up sitting there and playing the campaign by passing the controller back and forth with my friend. But low and behold that wasn’t nearly as fun.

And when Infinite was announced, I was relieved that they were bringing back THE reason to play the game in my opinion. As that feature was delayed, I stuck with the story that I would buy it as soon as the feature was available and I could dig into the Campaign with my friend. Then I kept pushing the timing of that back as they delayed it further…

Now, there is no reason for me to buy the game at all. If I can’t experience the story and game play with my friend like we always have, I will just read the wiki to get some highlights and let it go.

Again, this doesn’t matter for 343 in the end. One game not sold is nothing. Especially when I have game pass and well, I guess they get paid either way. I also know that heart felt stories of how much couch co-op meant to people only resulted in a 2 years of saying it would return, and then scrapping it.

So here is my small blip of data for when they look to make Halo 6(?) and try to decide about local co-op.

Basic features in games always leave. Even basic multiplayer modes are much more popular don’t stay compared to splitscreen. The only thing holding players back about this is one problem being nostalgia. You said it yourself, its been around since the beginning, so, if it wasn’t, nobody would really care as much.

This is the second problem. If they never promised, this would definitely just another mild disappointment. But I feel like this is where the anger is originating, from 343’s promise in Halo 5. Even I reverted straight to that memory the second I heard they cancen’ed splitscreen coop. But generally, we don’t have much need to care so much besides nostalgia and broken promises. In the end, there are better focuses for content in Infinite than splitscreen, which can be substituted by any other game for family entertainment anyways.

Quite literally the bigest betrayal 343i have delivered to date.
Split screen coop was one of my most wanted features and they bottled it again.

Its impossible to take a single 343i statement as true they have outright lied and abandoned the community at so many junctures now its beyond a joke.

And still people applaud their “transparency” like wtaf?

Im so utterly disappointed and dissatisfied by the management of this once flagship IP.

Its like if smash had no local play.
Cancel infinite. Start a new.
Please for the love of john hit the reset one more time and launch a worthy successor to halo 3.

I’m pretty sure they never said splitscreen was cancelled, but rather delayed. They said that co-op will launch without splitscreen, like how forge wasn’t in the game at first but is being added.

I’ve said time and time again, that a “soft reboot” just came with no humility or admittance of failure.

A “Soft reboot” is like, “we’re gonna make Halo good again, but we also won’t admit our Halo was bad.”

Make Halo 4/5 a fractures event. A scenario Cortana plays out as she’s going rampant on the Dawn. Start a new series set in the 2540’s, late war, and have it culminate with a quest to find the Dawn and rescue Chief, who becomes an NPC a la Sgt. Johnson, coming by in a pelican, dropping you tanks, and every once in a while he THROWS DOWN.

@Saint_Budden

Its was a statemwnt made by bonnie at GDC in a talk covering the lessons learned from H5G in IP and project management (the irony) that stared all core fps halos going forward would have local coop and slip screen
Same talk that said a year of public flighting for each new mainline title would be the way they developed new installments.

I guess they dropped the 6 for a reason then huh.
Its not numbered so they didnt breal the promise right?

They mention in the video that they are no longer working on it, meaning it is cancelled unless they change their mind.

With all the pushback, they would have said something by now.

better focuses such as what?

maybe for those who only play multiplayer games all the time.

not everyone plays online games all the time.

splitscreen halo is still an important feature to many gamers. it’s not something to just junk and forget about.

i don’t care if we have online co-op. that means arranging time with other players or building a second computer or buying another console and another tv or monitor.

just because some think it’s not worth focusing on, doesn’t mean that’s right.

they’ve promised it for several years and for them to suddenly drop it so quickly without any apologies is bs.

multiplayer is not the be-all and end-all of gaming like so many think.

what they need to do is make a new annoucement and put campaign splitscreen back on the roadmap alongside network co–op and mission replay and then release those as betas right now
so we the players can give feedback and then they can focus on their precious money making multiplayer.

we know the game can do splitscreen as it’s already in there for multiplayer (on xbox)
and many of us already played the co-op flight so they should get that out now without delay.

delaying stuff any futher just means more bad press and backlash.

Sadly I listened back to it, and she actually just said they will all “have splitscreen going forwards.”

I think co-op was IMPLIED. I still feel that she lied. It’s almost more slimy that they were already twisting words back then.

I looked at Chris Lee’s statement reaffirming it, and he said “there will be co-op at launch” and “there will be splitscreen at launch.”

Genuinely just evil and deceiving.

Can’t even count how many times I played the original titles over in split screen. Sad state of affairs anymore man

While id love to do that.
Its not the right solution some of the best eu content was in 343i era halo and for many younger fans thats the halo that made them fans to hand wave that away is not a fair solution.

A decent writing staff could fix it still although infinite made that harder than even its not impossible.
Sadly it just seems like the best out 343i have is time travel or multiverse both i absolutely do not wish to see.

We need to sit down and put all thenpeices together and provide a simple base narrative that can be followed by a new player while bringing a continuity to those who invested so much time into halo and its lore and mechanics.
We cant dissmiss new fans so easily as the legacy fans were in 343is past ventures. But most important we need a strong invested leadership that remains static for at least 2 mainline games and doesnt over correct at every turn or chase the latest status quo.
Halo was a fps part game that defined player options and social gaming with a pulp 90s sci ham horror 80s mil action world and anime aestetic by way of early 2000s western media. An identity that remains uncontested in the fps space.
Make halo a simple game make the lore optional. Make characters more archetypical.
That to me is the best course to getting back on track.

“Always have split screen going forward”
After she discussed backlash for coop in H5G has a very clear intent and I cant help feeling lied to.

With the way it was worded, it sounds like they aren’t working on it at the moment because there are bigger issues that need attention. I like co-op and understand why splitscreen is wanted by many, as I used to only do splitscreen, so I 100% understand the frustration.

I don’t believe 343 was intentionally deceiving anybody with the comments they’ve made in the past and now not delivered on. They just overestimate their abilities, and continue to let optimism blind them from their shortcomings.

Highly disappointed when I heard they were scrapping this because, as many before me have stated, it was one feature that was promised to be a part of every Halo game following the Halo 5 backlash. Now they’re dropping the ball again after years of promises. I couldn’t care less about a new multiplayer season or special colored armor bits that can be earned from playing online matches. I play for the campaign story and I enjoy playing Halo games together with my children. How am I supposed to do that with online coop? Does 343 expect me to purchase a second Xbox console and pay for another copy of game pass or of the game? Ridiculous.

I understand that I’m likely one of the minority who doesn’t play Halo for the multiplayer, but when an aspect that made Halo different is left out, after being promised to be included, well, is it really Halo anymore or is it just another FPS with a Halo skin-mod applied?

Did not buy the campaign and still won’t buy it. Split screen campaign co-op is a must. Actually haven’t even played multiplayer. My loss maybe/maybe not?

well it looks like folks on reddit have a new glitch they’ve been testing out that lets you play campaign splitscreen, still has saving issues but players have already tested it out on the series x and even the original xbox one.

(cons)

save corruption
tac map lag
needs 1 play online on friends list

(pros)

tac map works but lags
cutscenes play
can use fobs
both players have hud
and so on…

the other original glitch that allowed splitscreen campaign had the following issues;

save corruption
no hud on player 2
no tac map
no fob use
no cutscenes
and a few other things

making it very buggy.

As someone that regularly tries playing splitscreen MP with friends I’m disappointed, but in all honesty Infinite is not a great experience with half/quarter screen.
We are all decent players but in comparison to the older games there is so much more on screen and the game is a lot faster you have to be laser focused to be able to register enemies and win fights.

Still looking forward to coop but I won’t mind too much that will have to bring our own consoles and screens to do it.

on the 360 in splitscreen the fov was increased and today many people have big screens, way bigger than what people used to have on the original xbox and 360.

so screen space is not really an issue anymore, plus many modern tvs have aspect ratio controls so you can scretch the image to ditch the black bars on certain games.
