Splitscreen Co-op cancelled?

Is this real? They are cancelling split screen co-op? Can anyone confirm? I didn’t see it in the roadmap but didn’t hear that it was explicitly canceled.

How do y’all feel about this? Does this mean that everything we get in these road maps is subject not just to delay, but to cancellation?

Just another broken promise from 343

I wouldnt be surprised if the game is so dead come the holidays that season 3 gets canceled all together

Confirmed by the big man himself, Joseph Staten. The guy who lived and breathed through the glory days of couch co-op Halo.

I’m actually disgusted, with him and everyone at 343 for desecrating on the legacy of Halo. 343 did this with Halo 5: Guardians, and now they’ve done it with Halo: Infinite.

I used to be a lot more sympathetic towards 343, I really did. I played all of the games that they’ve made. I’ve even paid for the season passes in Halo Infinite. But this, I hate this, I really, really hate this. I think I may actually uninstall this game now.

Agreed.

I had so much faith in Staten, and so much hope when he joined the team, but this just feels like a huge betrayal. My trust is 100% broken, and I’ve thought that about 343 before.

All we can do is all uninstall simultaneously and hope that gets their attention.

Its not that big of a deal. I played a ton load of splitscreen during 2003-2012. But when I hit adulthood, I don’t even remember the last time I did a splitscreen coop and it couldn’t bother me less. There are definitely more essential features needed in Infinite right now than putting in splitscreen.

While it’s incredibly frustrating for them to promise something and then dip out of it, I also think it’s the right call for the moment. Their dev video outlines, effectively, that their aim is for shipping the big features they dropped the ball on by EOY 2023. That’s a massively long time, meaning every dev not working on something that’s a pipe dream (IMO, Xbox One split screen was always a pipe dream given Infinite’s performance envelope) is pushing things towards that goal line. I imagine it’ll still slip though, given their track record. Frankly, I’m just glad that coop in its entirety wasn’t delayed to next year. When they flighted coop in August, I knew there was no way it was launching same month. They’re too slow about collating feedback and getting bug fixes triaged for correction for that to have been realistic. My fear was it would become a 2023 thing in its entirety.

Another point here is that at some point before Halo Infinite released, Xbox claimed that Split Screen WAS going to be a part of Halo Infinite. That was a statement of fact that they made, promising that split screen was going to be a feature in Halo Infinite after its absence in Halo 5.

So, they lied then. They said a feature was going be in the game, only to then state that it’s. That’s false advertising. Anyone want to sue 343 for false advertisement?

“We’ve also had a lot of learnings along the way,” Ross said. “You know when we [fell down with the multiplayer launch of [*Halo: The Master Chief Collection, or when we didn’t put split screen in with Halo 5 . I think it’s incredibly painful for the community and for us. It erodes trust with the community, as the community is part of our world building. [We’ve had a] lot of learnings from that, and I would say for any FPS going out forward we will always have split screen going forward…”- Bonnie Ross

Bait and switch. They sold me the full game with the promise of couch co-op. Sounds like a class action suit to me.

Disappointing as my kids may have played with me, but don’t really care if I am honest. Probably the least important thing I can think of that needs to be worked on.

This sucks.

I can remember when – clearly – 343 said that after Halo 5 they would go back to local co-op. I was willing to wait for it. And they said it was coming. To just cancel it now? Sorry, I’ve been a big defender of 343. Give them time, give them time. I believed them when they said it would happen. Now I just feel like an idiot.

There is still no excuse for the entitled noxious behavior of many “fans” toward the developers, but I have to say this is a huge blow to 343’s reputation. They knew this was an issue since Halo 5’s backlash. They designed the game from the ground op. Surely there was a way to do local co-op.

Ugh. Just sucks.

This is a symptom of one of 343’s biggest mistakes starting with Halo 5. This hyper focus on the competitive scene, “HCS this, e-sports that.” That scene doesn’t particularly care about split-screen, but that scene is a small portion of the Halo community. The majority of the community has always been into the laidback, social experience of the games.

This studio is the most embarrassing thing to have ever happened in the game industry.

Eh, that title has some stiff competition. Honestly, I’d say The Coalition is far more embarrassing than 343. 343 has at least released some good games. Coalition’s only good game was the Ultimate Edition of Gears 1.

I bought infinte with the expectation and excitement of old school split screen with my step son. Im just over the lies and lack of follow through. I will speak with my wallet going forward. Im done with anything produced by 343. Im going to miss my favorite series, I’ve been with it since halo ce on pc. My only hope is microsoft can give this series to a dev who is capable of better.

I am confused what the technical issue is with it. We already have splitscreen for matchmaking/custom games… I havent coded since college but I feel like the bones are already there.

Why should we settle for less features? If they have to cut split screen co-op after promising they would include it then why was this game released last year? Infinite was announced way too early and even with a year delay came out incomplete and lacking basic features previous Halos had.

I’m not even mad at this point, I’ve just been waiting for good news and it seems all we get is bad news with the possibility of something good in the future. I just want a complete Halo that has all the features Halo used to have when it shipped.
