Split-screen support in Halo 5

I really hope they continue to support split-screen in Halo 5.

I hope so too. It’s really annoying and will continue to be too. Titanfall, Battlefield 4, Destiny, Halo Spartan Assault, and probably some more games don’t have split screen. WWWWHHHHYYYYYY!!!

It is concerning, that’s why I’m so worried about Halo 5.
I was crushed to hear Destiny won’t have split-screen, and, honestly, I probably won’t buy it any time soon now because I won’t have nearly the amount of fun I could have had.

very true
Destiny was a major sham with no splitscreen
please have splitscreen in halo 5

I can never understand why devs take out/leave out features that only add to the game.

They need to support LAN more. Nothing is better than playing classic Halo with your friends and eating some nice, hot, steaming, delicious, mouth-watering, fresh pizza.

^this this this.

You increase the value of the game exponentially by doing this. The replay value then holds steady for years to come. I hold two Halo 2 16 player LANs a year with massive amounts of beer and pizza, and it’s fantastic. You want to create a solid, classic game? Pander to everyone, even those that don’t own your console.

That was what was beautiful about Halo 2/3. You had friends that didn’t have XBL accounts and they could play campaign or split screen online (or offline). This is how I got through my freshman year of college, by playing Halo 3 on my account with three other friends in social slayer. Of course, once we moved to ranked we had to make seperate accounts, but that wasn’t much of an issue. You could casually have visitors down to your dorm room to waste hours on Halo because of split screen support. It was a social experience, not a solo one.

That’s what I miss about the old days of Halo. It was a social event. Your friends that didn’t own an Xbox or played Halo would come out because the game was rather intuitive. Sure, there were always going to be some of your friends that were always the best, but it isn’t like the skill gap that exists today in Halo 4, where you have to create your loadout, know all the buttons, and where all the guns are and their respawn times.

It used to be just grab an SMG or an AR and go. The Halo vets would clean up with the BR and what not, but because it was social, it didn’t matter that you got dominated because there were those always on your skill level. Even the worst kids took pride in their 5 kills or their lucky assassination of the best player.

But yeah. Give us split screen. And lots of it.

Split-screen is actually kind of a deal breaker for my wife and I. If we cant play split-screen, then idk if we get halo to be honest.

I think halo needs to remain unique amongst fps (and all games) for it to continue being a relevant exclusive now, and in the future. I am strongly against the notion of following the evolution of the rest of the industry. Just because another game(s) does (or doesn’t do) something, does not mean halo should follow suit. I think that path ends drifting toward irrelevance in an increasingly competitive and saturated gaming market.

When you buy halo, you should expect (and get) to play HALO, whatever that means. For example, you have a very good idea of what you’re going to get when you buy and play a Mario game; and those games are arguably the reason why Nintendo continues to remain relevant after all this time. Mario follows a certain “recipe” that it follows that gives it success.

I think Halo has a recipe going, but it’s ingredients have become increasingly convoluted. Halo should be halo, and it would be great. I think 343 wants to find that recipe by releasing the MCC; they want to see what people love (and dislike) about halo before and halo now, and how that develops the future. Get that recipe, and just stick to it.

Annnnnnnyway, split-screen, LAN support, and the “social” aspect of halo discussed in this thread so far, are definitely parts of a unique recipe that I would like to see stick around indefinitely.

(sigh)… got to love forum ranting.

Split-screen is really how I fell in love with Halo back in the CE days. I think back on all those hundreds of hours (literally) I spent playing with my college roommates in both CE and H2… they were the golden days of Halo for me, even better than H3 on XBL.

I haven’t played splitscreen since my Halo 2 days with my college roommates. But its lack of support is worrying. Like it was for me and my friends, Split-screen is a gateway for so many gamers into the franchise. Well worth the development, IMHO. Do right by this next generation, 343, and let gamers experience the joys of playing with multiple friends on the same screen.

No splitscreen=No game for me because of how much fun it is to do local co-op campaign and such.

It’s encouraging to see that many people feel this way! Hopefully 343 realizes this and stays to what has made, and will continue to make, Halo a unique experience. I couldn’t agree with all of you any more, Halo needs split screen, it needs to continue to be a great social experience.

It’s interesting to see how everyone got started playing Halo. It seems most of the time it involves split-screen or LAN with friends in the past; this includes me and my brother (who I always play split-screen with to this day). The first time I ever played Halo was at a friends house, we played some offline Slayer games with a bunch of people. It was awesome! The social aspect of Halo, and the focus on having fun with friends, is one of the things that make Halo so great.

All of the Halo FPS games have had split screen. There’s really no reason why they would stop now with Halo 5.

That’s what we hope for, but lately it seems that games are doing without a split-screen function. This is what is causing our worry :/.

I don’t see why companies are removing splitscreen features. Especially considering how many are saying “Multiplayer is the future!!” If multiplayer is the future, then where on Earth is -Yoinking!- splitscreen?

I even swore. I don’t swear often. That’s how much I want splitscreen.

That’s a great point! Many companies (Bungie with Destiny, Ubisoft with the new co-op Assassin’s Creed to name a few) are really stressing multiplayer, but not including splitscreen. It’s safe to assume the pay-off for adding/keeping splitscreen is better than not having it available at all.

The details I’ve read of MCC seem very indicative of 343’s attitude toward split-screen modes. I think we have reason to be fairly optimistic for future Halo games. Now whether H5 has decent framerate in split-screen mode is something I would be concerned about, as H4 had horrible framerate issues when trying to play split-screen. My wife and I are hoping for some good split-screen fun from 343… Sad to see that Bungie has joined the ranks of those producing unsocial nonsplit-screen games…

Why is everyone so worried about this? They’ve already gone out of their way to add online 2 player co-op for the first time. Halo 4 still had full support for splitscreen and LAN gaming.

I’ll say what I said in the other thread. The chance of splitscreen not being in Halo 5 is so incredibly small that the very idea of it not being in is crazy at best.

I think you guys should make more threads demanding 4 player local campaign/firefight/Spartan Ops splitscreen. It’s about damn time they add that in and its been frustrating to have friends over and not be able to play campaign with all of them.

Because it has become such a prevalent problem in modern FPS. Bungie who made the original Halos pretty much shocked everyone when they announced that destiny won’t have split screen.

Those games have always had 2 player local, so its not as though they added a whole lot. If anything adding online coop would indicate that they are moving away from local, though I doubt it.

To those who say split screen is “easy,” please remember that the game suddenly has to render twice as much. I think this is part of the reason a lot of games shy away from split screen. Allowing for split screen can take away from the games maximum potential because the developers need to either reserve some power and memory for rendering split screen or cut the fidelity drastically when split screen is enabled, which also has problems. I remember back in ODST during the highway sequence, on spit screen i had problems because the cars would often pop in ridiculously close making them much harder to avoid.

The other reason split screen is disappearing is that not having split screen sells more copies, and can even sell more consoles. When a game doesn’t have split screen gamers who buy it and want to play locally are forced to make a choice: play hot seat (which isn’t exactly playing together), or have their friends/siblings/spouse/etc. buy/bring their own console and TV. Neither of those options are very appealing, but if gamers want the game they will buy it anyway, and pressure their friends into buying it too

In some games no split screen can make a degree of sense but for games like Halo, it is very important, so I really hope they don’t neglect it.

The main issue is the recent trend of games not having splitscreen and local co-op support. Many people are just concerned that 343 will follow the trend for what is meant to be a social game.
