The ability to “join a game”, even while in progress and if the match is full, as an observer, or a guardian if you will. This would be similar to Theater, only your floating around and observing the match live, or cycling through the various players HUDs. You obviously would not have the ability to interact with the physical world in any way.
- It would be a really entertaining way to wait until your mate finishes his match - It would give a whole new weight to public “1v1 me bro” declarations - It would help facilitate the eSports community be allowing people to drop into a professional match as an observer. You could “watch” a tournament all day through the Observation Mode. - Probably would help the streaming communityI think this has been done in other games but I forget now where I may have encountered this. What do you guys think?
I’m wondering how many people would choose to watch their favourite streamers this way and what kind of stress it would put on the match if they had hundreds or thousands of users rendering a live battle.

Yeah, most likely there’d be a cap on the number of overall slots in the server but simply doubling it for example shouldn’t pose a big problem I’d assume - maybe with dropping in and out idk. And the streaming point is more of an after thought. It would be be nice to follow along with your buddy this way.
I think the only problem with a live observation mode is if you’re partied up with someone you’re observing. Giving them extra visual input and such.
Its not a major thing but I think one person having a backseat driver whilst the other doesn’t can be enough of a advantage at times.
Plus, pretty sure Spectate Mode exists in Halo 5 which is essentially this feature but it’s not a live playback but on a delay.
Can spectate anyone you want as long as their privacy settings allow it.

So, to get around the arguable advantage of having a buddy in spectator mode calling shots out for you, maybe you can’t be in a party at the same time. Know there are still ways to get around that but it seems like more effort than it’s worth to try to cheat the system somehow. And I did not know H5 has this feature! That is pretty nifty. I wonder if the slight delay in playback is to get around the sort of thing you’re talking about above, or if it’s just the load time.
The only way I could really see it working without affecting the networking of the game, is if you could watch a playback. It would need be delayed, so you wouldn’t quite be watching it in real time, but essentially you’d be watching the theater mode playback from the server probably about 15-30 seconds behind real-time.

That still wouldn’t really work in certain modes. In h5 the delay is 1.5 min. If you’re playing a gametype where camping is pretty common (I’m thinking infection) then you could see a survivor camping, tell your infected teammate where they are, and they would get a free kill.
I could also see this happening if they implement something like warzone again. You spectate an enemy who is defending their base by camping somewhere with an OP weapon, tell your teammate where they are, and your teammate gets another free kill.

Yeah, this is also true in h5 where you can’t spectate a member of your fireteam. But since a lot of people just use xbox parties instead of the in-game chat it doesn’t really have any effect on communication.
If we can agree on anything, I think it’s that we could expect to see similar spectator mode mechanics in Infinite as we’ve seen in H5. Which is great, I would just love to see a real-time version for special cases. Maybe we get the default H5 spectate ability, but then for matches smaller than the maximum party size, ‘NPCs’ could drop in as an observer which would basically just be like an invisible monitor. I’m not sure how/when it could be implemented best, but I love the idea of being that intimate in another persons game.

Well then the easiest solution, is to make it so you can only spectate members of the team you joined/spectated off of, and only from their point of view (first person or third in vehicles) basically watching a playback of what they experienced directly. With the delay serving to keep you from being another entity in the live game’s servers, for connection reasons.

Yeah I think that could work. Where you can’t switch between viewpoints.

The only issue with this is that I feel it’s limiting. Don’t get me wrong better than nothing, but it feels really constrictive watching a feed as opposed to actually being present on the map.

I mean, there’s always Theater for viewing a match more dynamically, it just wouldn’t be “real time” or near it.

It would be cool to be able to join a game, and on the Team Change setting, you could switch to a ‘Guardian’ or ‘Spectator’ whatever. And then you are essentially a silent observer of the server.
