For months leading up to the game release, Spartan Thorne was one of the few specific characters listed on IMDB (along with Blue Team, Osiris, Lasky, Roland, Arbiter, and Halsey).
He is still listed on Halo 5’s IMDB, despite
not appearing at any time in the campaign (unless I missed something obvious?!?).
So, did he originally have a role in the Halo 5 script that was edited out, or could this suggest that 343i is still, if discretely, keeping open the possibility of a Spartan Ops season 2?
He was supposed to be in the squad but get replaced by buck (presumably due to being killed), but Buck just had overall better character and brought more life to the squad, so they just made him part of the team from the get go.
Why keep him listed in the IMDB well after the decision to move Buck into Osiris occurred? They updated everything in IMDB in the last week following the game release, I feel like keeping Thorne listed is a deliberate move then. . .
According to one of the roundtable videos on Halo Channel, Thorne was originally going to be part of Osiris but the voice actor had another commitment and wouldn’t be available. 343 didn’t want to recast Thorne, so the decision was made to replace him with Buck.
If Thorne’s still listed on IMDB it’s an error, plain and simple.

So they recast Locke but not Thorne?
That’s… strange.

My guess is they thought Ike Amadi sounded enough like Mike Colter that no one would notice. I certainly didn’t.
I do not think Thorne will die, as DeMarco has already died. I highly doubt they’d kill off 2 members of Majestic. Also, the amount of Thorne products out there (there’s a $200+ statue of him) indicates that he might become a key character in the series. Also, if he wasn’t going to be, why make figures of him? He only wears recruit armor and was only in spartan ops. Yet we received Thorne action figures from 10+ companies and are yet to get a Lasky one.
Even though I liked Thorne, he wouldn’t fit in. Osiris is made of four of the best Spartan IV’s, they also have some top tier gear. Thorne is good but not that good, if they try it again, his armor and bodysuit should change. Give him a set that’s ba like Decimator which is closest to the Mark VII or Raijin.
Wanna see Majestic and Crimson again. Its odd that they made a canon emblem for Crimson if there is no future plan for them. I honestly thought they were just gonna kill Thorne off at the end of Escalation.
