Spartan Reset (and Campaign too)

I logged onto Halo Reach two days ago to find out my Spartan’s armour had reset, and it acted as if I’d just started playing Reach. My Rank was as it was, although I had to re-equip all my armour and redo my Emblem. I wasn’t really bothered until yesterday. The same thing happened again, so I repeated what I’d done the day before. I then soloed the Pillar of Autumn mission and for some reason I hadn’t got the solo the campaign on Legendary or complete Campaign on Legendary either. I went to check if I’d done the first mission (more like a cut scene) on Legendary, and every mission was locked except the Pillar of Autumn, Lone Wolf and the first mission. So those hours and hours of soloing Legendary have gone to waste.

Wondering if anybody’s had the same problem and whether anything can be done about this. Any help would be appreciated.

I’ve had my Campaign progress reset in the past, a fix is to usually delete your Xbox LIVE profile and re-download it from Xbox LIVE, usually the problem happens if your profile is slightly corrupted.

Sometimes my Spartan looks like a recruit when i first start up on Reach,
Then after afew games it corrects itself.
Your issues seem a little different to that though, I’d suggest doing as Moa suggested.

I’ve tried what Moa suggested but it hasn’t worked, thanks anyway. Any other suggestions?

EDIT: Is there an email I could contact for 343 with? I’ve been searching for one but I can’t find any.

I should have clarified, deleting your profile & re-downloading it will not bring your Campaign history back, it should simply stop the issue from occurring again in the future.

When you re-downloaded, did the issue happen again?

No, although it only happened once - two days ago.

Deleting & re-downloading should stop the issue from happening again hopefully.

Okay then, thanks for the help so far you two!

I must be one of the only people this has never happened to. Anyone know what actually causes it? I know it’s a well known glitch but has anyone actually discovered what is causing it?

You are very welcome, Have you had any luck fixing the issue?

Unfortunately, no. After a two hour conversation with Xbox Support, I was told to post about it in the Xbox Update Beta forums because it was supposedly to do with the preview. I replied saying that several friends of mine have the beta and no reach problems, and got no reply -_- So it looks like I’m gonna have to solo it all over again.

This doesn’t work. I just deleted my profile and re-downloaded it twice and Reach still reset everything both times. I had just unlocked half of my campaign levels again and it reset me again. You said in another post that this is just “an occasional bug that occurs in Reach.” Well; at this point it seems like a lot more than occasional and needs to be fixed. I also have another suggestion. It would be lot easier if 343 had a customer service contact or better yet, a phone contact, to deal with these extreme problems instead of letting computers and vague forums deal with them. All I’m saying is that this is a serious bug and needs to be fixed as we, the consumers, are very unhappy. How long before this “minor bug” actually resets our stats so we have to actually re-earn everything. FYI: This is only happening to Halo: Reach, so obviously there is a problem with you game, system, or both. I really hope a disgruntle employee didn’t plant a bug, because that would really suck for us and you.

Ok I just now tried to log into my son’s profile (Monster TS) and everything was reset on his a second time. I also deleted and re-downloaded his xbox live account before it happened again and yet it still did. Obviously you have a serious problem here 343 and it needs to be addressed. That being said; we would like to have an idea of when you will fix this “bug” or at least start working on the issue. I guess since these forums seem to be ignored I will have to post a complaint about every incident until we get an answer and some results. Better yet; why don’t you just start a real customer service department.

Your service record is showing you as a Colonel Grade 2, With an armory completion of 51%. So there’s clearly a glitch in the system, Has is since corrected itself?

Hey Tueton, Firstly i’m really sorry to hear about the issues you are having, It most certainly needs investigating further, I’ll try and get this looked at for you as soon as possible from a member of staff.

My armory completion is the same as before, as is everything else, but my Campaign progress is still lost.

I’m not an official 343i staff member, but I might know the basic reason why this bug has remained around for so long without being fixed, and why it probably won’t be fixed in the future. That knowledge won’t do much to prevent the problem from happening again, but maybe it could answer some questions you have. :\

Click the button if you’re interested:

Our story begins during the Bungie-343i switch. Some people say that Bungie had grown tired of making Halo games. Others say that they wanted to be an independent company, and Halo was the price they had to pay for that. Whatever the reason, Bungie made Halo: Reach, and then gave control of the franchise – including the duty of managing and maintaining Reach – to 343i.

What that means is that the company currently managing the game is not the same company that built it. 343 Industries has the job of maintaining what is essentially an enormous piece of software written by a completely different company, who may or may not have provided adequate documentation of that software’s systems.

What does that have to do with the bug? Well, this bug exists somewhere in the code responsible for saving or loading a player’s progress in the game. Code for that tends to be particularly sensitive; a single error in a game’s code, or a single glitched value in a save file, can render an entire save file unusable. These errors often aren’t obvious, either; they can result from very rare combinations of circumstances that often don’t show up in testing. (A test with a few hundred or even a few thousand company-owned Xboxes will never reveal as many edge-case bugs as a final release to hundreds of thousands of gamers.)

So modifying this type of code tends to be very risky to begin with. When you’re not the one who wrote the code, that risk gets magnified tenfold, because your understanding of the code will be secondhand at best.

I know that this bug is very frustrating – any time you lose hours of effort to a glitch in a video game, that’s going to be frustrating – but it’d be even more frustrating if 343i took the risk, tried to fix this bug, and created ten worse bugs in the process. They’re aware of this, which is one of the reasons why bugs like this plague Reach to this day.

Thank you. I have discovered some things while trying to figure out why this is happening suddenly on my system.

1: After investigating other forums on the web, I have noticed posts dating back to 2010 claiming the same issue with Reach.

2: I can not log into my gamer tag within the game without it showing symptoms of doing this again. I have to back out to the dashboard, log in, and re-enter the game.

3: Physical investigation of my game disc shows discoloration (kind of like a slight smoke effect) on the data side. I have other games that work fine with this and I have owned this disc since the pre-order pick up, but I had to return a brand new Max Payne 3 purchase that had a similar discoloration because it caused it not to be read beyond the first half of the first level.

Perhaps the community may have similar symptoms or more to add to help clear this up. In the mean time it still seems my game wants to still wipe out mine and my son’s game history if we are not cautious and keep our guard up. This has also frustrated my son so much that he has gotten to the point of losing interest in Reach and possibly the whole franchise. I still have hope, but he is my #1 gaming partner until he decides otherwise and I already have Halo 4 on pre-order just like I did all the others.

TBH I’ve heard of the data loss glitch, but I’ve never heard of it happening as frequently as it has to you. That plus discoloration on the disc would suggest that your disc is damaged in a way that makes the bug far more common.

(You may have other games with discolored discs that work fine, but that could be because the damaged data isn’t critical to the game’s operation. In fact, many games often have a sizable amount of unused space, so it’s possible that the working discolored discs simply sustained damage to that unused space, while Max Payne 3 and Reach sustained damage to their program code.)

Have you tried borrowing or renting an undamaged Reach disc, and playing using that disc? If the problem is being triggered by disc damage, then playing on a different disc might solve the problem.

Best-case scenario is, you have to spend money on a new Reach disc, but now you know what the problem is and are unlikely to encounter it again.

Medium-case scenario is, you experience data loss one more time with the new disc, but after that, everything’s fine and your data is relatively stable again.

Worst-case scenario is that your profile data was already so badly hosed by the damaged disc that no disc can salvage it.
