Spartan Ops : Yay or Nay?

In my opinion, I think its a good thing. Quite a lot of people say it’s copying MW3’s Spec Ops, probably because they sound similar. I like it because it is free DLC (every week) where new areas and another storyline are released for people to play.

Why do I like the sound of it?

  1. It’s free - you can’t say it’s bad when it’s free

  2. It offers unexplored areas and another story to the game, expanding the Halo universe and making the game more immersion. If done right, it can build more excitement for the next instalment, much like a TV show.

  3. You can play with friends! Being able to play with friends often adds more enjoyment because you share the experience.

  4. 343i are thinking about the long term results of Halo 4. Most games have a hype at the start and then are forgotten about. In this case, a constant stream of free DLC allows 343i to keep this hype up by building excitement and fascination each week, if done right. It also says to people “look at all the content we have and are going to release!”, whether they have bought the game or are considering buying it. This plan to extend the longevity of Halo 4 is good financially for 343i so they have the funding for an even better next game.

  5. It has high potential to attract new players and expand the “community”

Those are my thoughts, and I have a ton more. There could be the downside where a lot of development time for Halo 4 at the moment is being dedicated to it, but there is the potential for this to expand into other games and 343i should not be discouraged from doing it. As far as I can see, not a very large team is needed and there are plenty of benefits to having it.

It’s not a new concept. This sort of idea has happened before, and was quite popular a few years ago to sell missions of a game in small chunks so that you don’ have to buy a full game only to find you don’t like it. However, this is free. You can’t say it was a waste of money if it’s free. I hope it stays free, especially if it continues into future games and other franchises, so that you know that you got your moneys worth (except if the business model of a game is like this).

Yay, but for the love of Talos change the name!

What would you change it to? Maybe suggest where it is based or something like that. It might be that “Spartan Ops” is the project name, like Halo 2’s project name was “Project Blam!”

My response is what the kids say when the Grunts are killed with Birthday Party on.

Yay, I’m really looking forward to hearing more about it.

Yay for Spartan Ops, nay for the name.

They need to change the name and have a few firefight like missions.

People are saying that the name should be changed, but I don’t see why it should. The name suits the gamemode.

343i Is expanding the story even FURTHER through the use of Missions? New ones every week for free? Hell yah i am! Although the name could be a bit cooler… but its accurate.

Definitely, but with a new name please. It sounds way too much like ripping off. I mean, Spec-Ops and Spartan-Ops? See what I am talking about?

The weekly mission update factor is what really sold it for me. Week to week we unlock story elements that relate to the universe weeks and maybe even months after Halo 4 gets released. It’s like weekly story DLC and its no extra charge! A certain yay for me.

I believe the name will be changed, in the GI issue for ODST they called it Halo 3: Recon, but then it was changed.

Actually, Bungie originally called it Halo 3: Recon, but I think they changed it because too many people were associating it with the Recon armour rather than the ODSTs.

Yay! If there truly is at least 1 mission a week, I will be very happy! Hopefully the storyline is actually good and has good cut scenes n’ stuff.

I don’t see why not.

I am VERY excited about it. It seems like it is going to be very addicting. Have to disagree with the name however. It sounds very non-creative. Hopefully the name and A LOT of other things we have seen are placeholders.

Ok so I am going to say this is similar to what Bungie is planning to do with its new game. I thought Bungie or Staten in particular said wouldn’t it be great if the game was always there for you at any time or something like that.

This seems to be the same thing.

I do not like how people are saying it is like MW3 because it isn’t. This is story based not just mission based and is a continuing journey. Do not make the mistake to think it is a carbon copy or what has already been done.

I like to think of it as free DLC/Game add on to expand the story. It makes for a better game, more game play and a place to show skill and not just slaughtering enemies on easy.

I really believe this is going to shock everyone and will be the new innovative idea that all others will try to follow. Not only Bungie can come up with a new idea and again do not be shocked of their new game isn’t shockingly close to how the Spartan Ops is made.

Basically a wheel like they used in ODST where you can experience your game play by deciding where and when to go and who ti be, like just a regular person or something else.

I would guess something like Dungeons and Dragons only with a futuristic twist.

If done correctly it will really keep people playing.

If at the end of a mission there is a cliffhanger type ending, that will get you comming back for more.

In addition, they can tie Achievements into it as well.

I really do not see much of a downside at all.

This does remind me a whole lot of the Satellaview.

As I said, this idea isn’t new. A few years ago, this used to be the way of doing it, except you paid on a mission by mission basis rather than a full game. 343i are doing it by giving it to you for free instead, probably to give you your moneys worth for a AAA priced title
