So today I played the first Spartan Ops mission of episode 5 on Legendary (after viewing the awesome CGI movie, props to 343 (: ) and the mission is practically impossible to do solo without dying more than twenty times. Now it could be that I just really suck but when I spawn on the low ground surrounded by Knights with Scattershots and Incineration Cannons with only really a plasma pistol as an effective means of dispatching them quickly I die within 15 seconds of spawning. I know the deaths aren’t recorded or anything but it really isn’t fun because honestly I tried to run away to the high ground to gain an advantage but I kept getting Binary Rifled (which is an unfair instant kill) and so I ended the mission with 30+ deaths. All I’m asking is that 343 find some way to fix the spawn locations away from enemies and tone down the enemy count for a guy playing the missions solo. Hope I didn’t overstep my bounds but I really just want to enjoy the missions without dying because I don’t spawn with overshields and a rocket launcher, I want to know that when I die it’s because I messed up or because I was truly outclassed by the AI and not because I was spawned in the wrong place against overwhelming odds.
Theres a mission in the first chapter that spawns about 30 watchers at the same time, and they all spawn like 3 crawlers. That mission is impossible to complete without dying.
Its not impossible it just takes a while. just take your time get the head shots and make sure you keep grabbing ammo.
Thanks for the replies. I’m not saying that I wish they were easy enough to do without dying ever (that’d be boring) in fact I liked the earlier missions like Gargarin where the spawned a lot of enemies (good for commendations (: ) but that mission was on a map with space, multiple levels and the spawning was good (you typically spawned in a hallway or in the back room). This new mission however spawns you right in the middle of 5 Knights and about 3-4 watchers without modest cover or an escape route. Like I said earlier I tried my hardest to run away from the kill box of a spawn that I was placed in to no avail for about 5 lives until I managed to get away. The missions have become increasingly more ridiculous with the amount of enemies, I really wonder if 343 has someone play test these missions on legendary solo because they would find it not to be pretty sight. Thanks again for the replies.
Try doing the mission on Ragnarok that has Mantises. I can’t really say it’s too hard. It just takes for -Yoinking!- ever to kill the phantoms…
practice more, there is nothing wrong with the missions and they are rather easy when you get the hang of them.
Some are easier than others because on the latest episode on the last chapter I played solo on legendary and got the Mantis and because of this I got the what power outage? achievement without breaking a sweat!
Ok so has anyone tried Spartan Miller on Legendary solo and found no problems with it? If so I’d love to hear your thoughts because I’m not talking about practice here I’m talking about being completely under powered. Shootout in Valhalla is fun and yes all missions after a while become formulaic and arguably easier after “practice” but there is no way to practice a mission like Spartan Miller. Even the mission before Valhalla called Spartan Mountain got a bit ridiculous after the initial shootout and you take down the shields to find 4 hunters and 3-4 elite generals with fuel rods constantly shooting a wall of green death at you. Thanks for your thoughts guys but we are dancing around the issue here.
Yeah, it’s pretty much impossible almost on some missions, just because the AI seems to always know you’re there. Spartan Ops is designed for 4 player Co-Op though, so I mean, it’s not too out of the question that it’s difficult.
Ironic seeing there’s an achievement for doing Ops solo on Legendary.

The enemies’ numbers don’t scale down when you’re playing Solo, so it can indeed get difficult at times. Seriously, on some Refuge levels, the game will spawn SEVERAL Promethean Knights all at the same time.
Thanks Nox and Alpha you two seem to know what I’m getting at. In any case Spartan Ops was designed for four players so I can’t dispute that. But if you do happen tp play solo they could at least add computer players to aid you. By the way is it possible to post videos or clips from your file share? Because I have some clips that illustrate my points quite well. (I got Binary Rifle 6 times in a row in the course of 2 minutes)

At least mission 1 and 4 must be completed with four players. Since you need to protect the generators and other things.
You can’t have everything.
You must either be ready to die a LOT, or be ready to spend a LOT of time, but it is possible. .
I guess the title of this thread is not correctly named. I just feel like 343 feels they can make the missions harder by throwing the kitchen sink at you and that isn’t a challenge it’s a chore. I find no enjoyment from missions like EP. 5 CH. 1 because like Emylee said a prerequisite for success on missions like that is to accept the fact that you will invest a lot of time and dying to win and those aren’t deaths that the enemy gets because they are good.

We haven’t done E5CH4 yet, but my buddy and I cleared E5CH1 with just the two of us. We got the Achievement too, which is odd- I was under the impression you couldn’t die towards the end or something, but we were dying left and right throughout the mission and still got it, so maybe it’s for just clearing it at all?
Also, quick tips for M1 (and M4 if it’s similar):
-
Fully Charged Plasma Pistol is your friend; I use that and Carbine on Knights almost exclusively if I can help it.
-
Prometheans seem to be weak against Covenant Weapons
-
Don’t bother with the Sniper Rifle or SAW, try to stick with Rockets and Shotguns (or noob combo)
-
If you see your Generator surrounded and being attacked by enemies (mainly use this for Knights,) DON’T SHOOT! Instead, run up and assassinate them; if you don’t shoot at them, you won’t get their attention, so they won’t shoot at you (this is a large reason for why we were able to clear it)
To be perfectly honest though, we couldn’t have possibly cut it any closer. We were defending the last Generator not by killing, but by drawing their fire long enough to make it at the last possible second- maybe the last possible tenth of a second; it was REALLY close.

Whoops! I totally forgot I wrote this late this morning right after the thread was posted:
Actually, the problem you had is not limited to solo, unfortunately; when my best friend and I played that mission a few nights ago, it seemed like it could only go one of two ways:
-
Exactly as you said, with us spawning right in the midst of the madness, soaking up damage during our short invulnerability period before dying
-
Being spawned in the “next galaxy over,” and by the time we get back, at least one of them has died of boredom, lol.
But seriously- we either come back in the mosh pit, or the parking lot, and neither are all that exciting. Now, that’s not to say we can’t try to sprint away to create some distance, and slow down as we get back to the enemies, but typically it doesn’t matter; as soon as we would engage with one of them, its two buddies will have taken someone’s head clean off with a Binary Rifle… they’re surgical with that -Yoink-! ><
But yeah, the majority of the respawn areas are pretty terrible. I can’t even count the number of times I have respawned what seemed like 1-2 checkpoints back from where my partner is, or forward from the “dead-end” of a level where you’re supposed to turn back. For example: say we make it to the waypoint, activate the thingamajig, and turn around to head back to the beginning of the level for extraction. Well, OBVIOUSLY, somewhere between three and three hundred drop pods have decided to stop for fuel, each carrying its payload of Grade-A Covenant Meat Shields, and you have to make your way through them… however, sometimes when you respawn, you’ll be on the other side of them, and have to go BACKWARDS in order to clear them out. NOTE: I don’t know if you actually need to kill them at all; we just clear everything out in every area.
I find it insanely easy.
> I find it insanely easy.
Uhh, have you tried E5C1 on Legendary? I mean, from what I’ve seen, Heroic isn’t even close, and while I saw on your profile that you finished the first four Episodes on Legendary, E5C1 is in a completely different league; the fact that the Generator Defense can’t be skipped or avoided is the vast majority why. I mean… if I remember correctly, once you clear that task, you’re good to go; it won’t matter how many times you die, or how long you take after that point, etc. However, trying to clear it on Legendary is going to require that most people are part of a 3-4 man team.
