Spartan Ops Skulls Feedback

If you have played the Season 1 encore of Spartan Ops with Skulls enabled, this is the place to leave the Matchmaking Systems Team your feedback! Please leave your thoughts on the Skull selection and gameplay experiences here.

Note: If you found a bug while playing Halo 4 Matchmaking, please post here.

The following Skulls are currently enabled in Spartan Ops:

Grunt Birthday Party
I Would Have Been Your Daddy (IWHBYD)
Mythic

The Matchmaking Systems Team will review feedback and join the discussion when necessary. Thanks for playing.

Other than having the problem of that there is no reason to play Spartan Ops again after completion (other than playing for own enjoyment) you could still improve on the experience with more/more crazier skulls

ie catch and so on (not just those 3)

but it’s a fun improvement to an extent

Possibly for Halo 5, if Spartan Ops is in it, put skulls IN the actual maps in cool locations and make those skulls DIFFERENT from previous Halo titles and more crazy and fun to play with on

just ONE thing you could do to increase replayablility slightly with Spartan Ops in the next game

I’m loving the change and the extra challenge Mythic brings to the table!

I’m hoping you guys consider doing this more often. I’d love to see a different type of Iron Skull that just makes it so you have one life, and once all Spartans are dead, it’s mission failed.

Catch would be a fun skull, too, as would Thunderstorm.

Is there a way that this can be placed in just Matchmaking, though? I’ve noticed it effects the custom Spartan Ops games as well. It’s not too much of a big deal for myself, but just curious.

Skulls are awesome!

I love everything about Halo except skulls! Grunt Birthday Party totally ruins it for me, and I wish it could just be turned off.

Many players are not on halowaypoint, therefore they have no idea that you have enabled skulls hardness multipliers for Spartan ops. You need to inform people that this has been done when they go to play Spartan Ops and tell them that certain Skulls are on. I’m not sure where exactly this is going to be, but it needs to be visible to the players.

I like the idea of Skulls - but only if I have control of them.

Even if 343 maintains the “we can’t change the GUI” stipulation (why this is has NEVER been explained), they could toggle Skulls through the WayPoint web interface. We already log in to get to get our gamer stats - so we pull information from the game servers - why can’t we send it?

Basically it would operate like this. You log into WayPoint using your gamer tag (as we all do to post a message), click on the “CAREER” tab, click on the "HALO 4 SETTINGS "tab that 343 adds, then check or uncheck various Skulls for Spartan ops (or other external game settings) on that web page. Using your Gamer Tag, those settings get sent to the game set up server and the next time you play Spartan Ops, they get used.

Not as good as being able to turn it on / off in game directly, but infinitely better than what we have now - which is take it or leave it.

For you? Yeah. But for me, they suck big time. I try to get get into the narrative of Spartan ops only to be annoyed with the sound of children cheering everytime I shoot a grunt in the head. Really sucks…SMDH.

You totally nailed it! Great point! I hope they listen. It’s my first time being pissed off about Halo. Hope it’s the last.

It definitely makes it harder. I play non-matchmaking because of the lag, and the sword elites are finally scary.

I think its great they added skulls.

For H4 I think its the best thing they could do. Its nice to have a few options on how you would like to play, as long as the number of options don’t become to large and makes it harder to find a match. The trick is to find the right setup for the options that people like to play in.

It’s in the description of the levels when selecting them in MM.

Though, I do agree it would be nice for the weekly update pop-up to note this.

Thanks for the feedback. Each mission has the Skull information displayed in the description, with each Skull identified. We’ll look to notify players via the in-game message when possible.

Thanks for the response and clarification.

I never read or noticed the mission briefing text when selecting a SPops mission, as I just pushed through to play that chapter. It’s there but wasn’t obvious.

It would be much better if it was more visible and had Skulls shown somewhere. A possible location might be at the bottom of the “Play Chapters” screen between the “Spartan Hub” and the “X Roster” buttons when you select which Chapters to play. That area has quite a bit of room to fit some skulls in or add a “Skulls” button.

If we are wishing for things, I REALLY would love to be able to turn on / off the Skulls myself and have the ability to have the Score points for each enemy killed and any medals I made (double kill, multi kill etc.) I made appear on screen when I do it. That would really help the replay value of Spartan Ops.

Also if your looking at repurposing the Spartan Ops Maps (why waste a resource like this that 343 spent money on) , consider this thread:

https://forums.halowaypoint.com/yaf_postsm2730790_Practice-Arena.aspx#post2730790

and also adding some of the SPOps maps to War games for 8x8 or 4x4.The Episode 7 Chapter 2 to 5 maps inside Infinity would be superb for close quarters combat for 4x4 or 6x6 Classic Slayer (no weapons drops inside the ship, right?). And Episode 10 Chapters 1 to 5 wound fit well for Classic BTB or BTIS, especially the open space in Chapter 3 Apex for vehicular combat. Most of them likely require only minor modification (blocking some exists, adding some player, vehicle and weapons spawn points) to make them War Games ready.

Thanks for listening and responding, it is appreciated.

Spartan Ops has been the best addition to Halo. I’m enjoying the challenge of the Mythic skull. This is a refreshing way to get back into the Spartan Op games.

Is there a way to keep track of the chapters completed with the mythic skull on legendary and will there be a reward (skin or armor) for completion of all 50?

I play Spartan Ops regularly, and I didn’t even notice they were put on! Though I got to ask, were they added today? Because I played Monday and Tuesday, and I’m pretty sure I did not hear a single child scream. (I did just play Customs, not Matchmaking, so that may be why)

Anyways, I have a feeling GBP will get annoying. That may just be me though (Reach’s Armor Effects made me no longer enjoy that once awesome effect unfortunately).

IWHBYD. Will this actually do anything? Majority of the time you’re not with Marines or Spartans. And the Covenant/Prometheans speak, well, Covenant/Prometheans. Not complaining that it’s in, just wondering if it was worth the time putting in.

Mythic. My friends and I are enjoying this Skull! We usually go into Customs and play whatever mission we want on whatever difficulty. But now, we’re going to treat Spartan Ops like we did when it was first released: Wait every Monday for the newest Episode, and complete the Chapters in Matchmaking. We’re excited! And scared for Episode 5, Chapters 1 and 4, because those are going to be difficult (since you can fail those)! Spartan Ops is now really challenging (though unlimited lives does kinda ruin the aspect, but it’s still awesome)!

Now, I’m assuming AI-affecting Skulls can’t be added in for some reasons (you’d have to basically go in and edit every single AI’s coding I’m assuming). But I do think this does leave us with: Famine, Tilt, Black Eye, Thunderstorm, and Blind. I’m going to assume majority (at least me) don’t want Black Eye nor Blind. Tilt is a maybe. But I could definitely see at least Thunderstorm and Famine. As for Iron, can this be added in to some measure? As in, end/restart the mission when all players die at the same time? I’d think this can work, since there’s the “Restart Mission/End Mission” options in customs, couldn’t you do some kind of work around where when all players die and instead of respawning at a spawn point (when the player can’t spawn on another player), it forces the Restart Mission/End Mission options? I’d prefer the end option since forcing a restart over and over and over again could very well suck. This could force unfortunate solo plays however, since when the one player dies, it’d end the mission right then and there, forcing “No Deaths” playthroughs (though if this is added only in Matchmaking, then this shouldn’t overall be a problem). By adding in the Iron Skull, it essentially gives players the limited lives challenge that they’ve been asking for.

So, if possible, add in the Thunderstorm and Famine Skulls at the least. Adding in the Iron Skull, which forces the “End Mission” option when the players can’t spawn on each other, is a second thought that should be considered.

Either way, thanks for adding in these Skulls (especially Mythic!)! My friends and I are really happy for them! Replay value has been increased for us! Sure, it’s not Season 2, but we’ll take what we can get!

EDIT: Started thinking…

Add in the Cowbell Skull. That would be cool and nice.

Secondly, if you do ever add in the Thunderstorm Skull, and especially the Iron Skull, tone the Difficulty down to Heroic. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact it’s Legendary, and the additional challenge of Mythic, but even I think Thunderstorm added in with the difficulty would be too much.

Having skulls forced to be on, I will be avoiding Spartan Ops until such time as things revert to normal. I am definitely not enjoying the skulls being mandatoriailly applied.

I have to agree. I am glad to know i am not alone. I enjoyed the game. now I am not even excited to see this game as it goes forward. I like that skulls were an option. the birthday party skull gets old and obnoxious after a while and I normally choose to play on legendary for the challenge and adding all the extra skulls doesn’t help and it isn’t like there is something you get for doing it. I think this is one of the biggest mistakes that 343 has made. makes me sad to think they ruined a great game with this. Ten long weeks.

I thought you meant we could find skulls in spartan ops for easter egg purposes.

I just picked up Halo 4 again after a few months, looking to nail some more achievements. Forcing me to use the Mythic skull makes several of them significantly more difficult ‘No one left behind’ for example. GBP unfortunately does get annoying eventually, especially as I have had to retry chapters a lot in search of achievements. I’ve always liked skulls because they allow me as a player the flexibility to alter the challenge of the game, but making them compulsory seems counter productive and contrary to their initial design purpose. Put bluntly I’m avoiding Spartan Ops until they are gone. Please 343, by all means add skull options to Spartan Ops, but don’t force them on people.

It tacts on a few more minutes.
