So after…2 years now, why does Halo 4 still require Xbox Live Gold to play Spartan Ops? Half of it (first 5 episodes) are already on the disk, not to mention the fact you can download the rest without Gold. What will happen when the servers eventually go down? Will a giant portion of the games content suddenly become unavailable?
Yes?

Xbox Live for Xbox 360 and Xbox One (and PC/mobile games) is essentially the same thing, since everything from achievements to marketplace purchases is linked between consoles (they all use the same Windows ID). I highly doubt that the Xbox 360 online servers will be shutting down any time soon, at least not for another few years, by which time Halo 4 will be lucky if its even played.

They confirmed that they will be supporting the Xbox 360 for at least the next 7 years last E3.
They have no plans to make spartan ops not require gold on halo 4. but look on the bright side, if you get MCC, it is free offline!
Maybe they need the money
7 years then what? ;(

The XBOne will be a last-generation console (at best), and the XB360 will sit in museums alongside the XB and Atari.
spartan ops for gold isnt bad, you just need to make the most of your gold
halo ftw
I’m pretty sure it’s not required in the Master Chief Collection. I’m able to play it offline.
What will come next if Xbox One is “last generation console?”

Well you’ll still be able to play it, but there will be no support provided for you if you have issues and no more content or security updates released for it. By that time though, the console will have been on the market for over 15 years, which is a ridiculously long time in the tech world. I’m sure there will still be sites offering 3rd party support though
Get gold
It’s actually really worth it. It ends up paying for itself with all the benefits including free games
