Have Spartans been trained in fighting styles? They have to know more then just Combat/Action Shooting, thankfully Halo 5 gave us our first hand to hand scene ever. I may not be an expert in martial arts but here’s what I can gather so far from Jameson and John’s fight.
Given their punches consists of right and left hooks I would say that Spartans know boxing
1:21 1:47 Those backhands I could say is a karate move called the Spinning Back Fist
1:38 That grapple technique could either be Pro Wrestling or Judo
1:41 That kick could be Taekwondo since its known for kicking techniques
1:44 2:10 Those knee strikes could be Muay Tai since it uses your limbs like knees like weapons
2:17 That headbutt might be Muay Boran, an ancestor as its called the Art of 9 limbs instead of 8, That 9th limb being the head
And thats all I could gather so far, would be cool if Godzillarex saw my analysis. I could be wrong about the fighting styles here so if you think I am I would love to hear your thoughts on the fight so we can discuss what fighting styles the UNSC may have taught their Spartans
I believe they were taught a wide range, one of the books references Greek Wrestling. Li 008 was also said to to be exceptional amongst even the 2’s as a martial artist, Fred is also a lover of CQC and relishes the blade.
I would assume they are trained in a wide variety of fighting types. Even today, military training consists of a number of different martial arts, ranging from boxing and jiu jitsu to krav maga and karate. Given the decades of training each Spartan went through, they are likely experts in at a minimum four or five distinct martial arts each (given that it typically takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in any given subject). And that’s just martial arts, not counting strategy, gun fighting, and all manner of military related subjects.
The Spartan Field Manual mentions Spartan-IVs (at least) are cross-trained in multiple styles of martial arts and their augmentations help them learn them faster.
More than likely they know most of the basic ones from Earth and possibly some newer ones that evolved in the 500 years since.

Killer Orca’s quite correct.
Specifically, on page 40
Every Spartan-IV has basic training in hand-to-hand combat from their previous years of military service, but Spartans are required to learn several fighting styles, as different methods work for different situations. This can mean redirecting the force of a massive Brute’s punch with Aikido, disarming an Insurrectionist rebel with Jiu-Jitsu, or taking down a Covenant Elite in close quarters with Krav Maga. Though this may sound daunting, your augmentation gives you the ability to learn new fighting techniques from your opponents–effectively acting as an enhanced “muscle memory” that makes observing and memorizing techniques much easier. To this end, you will be paired with a Spartan who has already mastered the techniques you must learn.

Seems about right. Within the modern US Military, at least, service specific CQC styles typically take from multiple martial arts styles, while encompassing techniques that incorporate additional weapons within that service. The point there being, that some of the techniques must be adapted to be performed in flak and Kevlar, etc. Interesting how this might work for SPARTAN operators, who wear MJONIR with less encumbrance than a soldier or marine would experience in their body armor.
