Spartan Locke

After playing through Halo 5, was I the only one who found it strange that Locke, while to my knowledge has no rank as a Spartan other than his ONI status; addresses the Chief as “sir”? Is it out of respect for Chief as a solider, or is it due to some other reason?

Respect. All Spartans no longer hold rank, when “Spartan” became it’s own branch whoever joined became “spartan” insertnamehere. I’ll admit though I’m unsure about whether or not the Spartan IIs who previously held rank keep their rank. All spartan IVs however are simply Spartans. And before anyone tries to say it, no Commander Palmer isn’t actually a commander. It’s her job title as the head of all the Spartans stationed aboard Infinity, not her actual rank.

Are there other Spartans stationed on other ships/locations besides infinity. If so in a combat situation who holds strategic command?

Remember that John-117 Holds the Title of Master chief, altough there are other spartans that outrank him such as fres, Kurt, etc. The Master chief IS the Spartan who saved humanity multiple times, so no matter what rank you may have, Locke calls him sir out of respect.

Good question. I’m sure there’s an established chain of command in the spartan branch, but I’d like to see an official source saying who is in charge and where. Given that Infinity is the UNSC flagship, I’d imagine Palmer may have “seniority” over other ships’ Spartans. There are lots more people on waypoint better versed in the lore than I am. Monitors, would any of you know if there’s an officially established chain of command for the Spartan branch?

John-117 is ranked as Master Chief Petty Officer, which is the highest UNSC Navy ranking a non-commissioned officer can attain, which probably is part of it. Chief is also still under the command of the UNSC Navy, rather than the Spartan Branch. And, like Sierra0331 said, it’s likely in part due to respect for him.

Oh I didn’t know Chief was still under the navy. What about the rest of the surviving Spartan IIs?

Apparently all of the remaining Spartan-IIs answer to Naval Special Warfare as they originally did. Spartan-IIIs and Spartan-IVs report to the Spartan branch.

Respect probably, but the Chief is a naval officer. That may still warrant a “sir” from Spartans even though they don’t technically have ranks. Which by the way, is complete and utter idiocy that would probably never really work.

Yeah, the whole ‘all Spartans are equal’ thing is kinda stupid. In my opinion, they should have ranks based on experience. Placing someone with less experience as a Spartan at the same standing as someone with more experience will be irritating for some.

My guess is to be polite and respectful.

Commander Palmer doesn’t have control over the Spartans; it is merely out of respect they follow her orders. That is, if I remember Halopedia correctly. I can see why it would be, because Palmer is a terrible Commander

So does that mean that Spartan’s no longer have ranks after Spartan III’s then? As of Reach the Spartan III had ranks from Enlisted to Officer.

Correct. The Spartan IV’s have no rank within the Spartan branch. There are fireteam leaders, and then the Commander. Which, again, is ridiculous.

Definitely out of respect, I mean come on, Locke is now a spartan and he is talking to the greatest spartan, the one who has saved humanity from two large threats, the covenant and the flood. It would be very odd for someone within the Spartans to think the Chief does not deserve respect.

For the spartans on infinity it goes UNSC high command > Admiral Musa > Captain Lasky > Palmer > Spartan control (miller) > Squad leader (Thorn) > Spartans. I assume any spartans not on infinity would report directly to Musa or UNSC high command.

That makes sense. However, I don’t like the fact that they took away ranks from the Spartans. Although I suppose when dealing with standard UNSC Military members the “experience outranks everything” rule may apply.

To be fair only 2 active 2s were ever officers (Kurt and Fred). Also from what is shown in game the Spartans have quite a high level of autonomy. They report directly to the top.

That is true. But then again there is really no Spartan II’s left.
