I have a question:
After Chief had gotten his Mark VI armor and was in New Mombasa, Linda, Fred, and Will were also on Earth fighting in Antarctica and on the Yucatan Peninsula. Chief and the crew of In Amber Clad then followed Regret to Delta Halo while the rest of Blue Team headed towards Cuba.
I wondered why Chief never joined the rest of Blue Team, but I figured they both had two separate and necessary missions to complete in different hemispheres so it was impossible. Plus the slip space jump was unexpected; I’m assuming they otherwise would have.
But I am a very visual reader and nowhere in the book has it mentioned Linda, Fred, and Will getting Mark VI armor. Previous books detailed when they received the Marks IV & V, so I’m still visualizing them in their Mark Vs.
Did they get upgraded to Mark VI like Chief or are they still running around in Mark Vs (my personal favorite)?
It’s been stated that the surivivng IIs recieved Mark VI upon returning to Earth.
“Comprised of John-117, Frederic-104, Kelly-087, and Linda-058, Spartan Blue Team recieved Mark VI upon returning to Cairo Station, not long after conducting Operation: FIRST STRIKE.”
If the cover art for Ghosts of Onyx is canon, then yes they certainly did. The cover presumably has Fred (Mark VI), Kelly (Mark V) and Kurt (SPI). As for where they were when the Chief was on Earth, the Definitive Edition of First Strike has a story in which an ONI doctor has Fred psychologically analyzed during the Battle of Earth. This could explain why he and the rest of the Spartans weren’t there when the Chief fought and then left.
Really though it was just Bungie not wanting the game and books to connect. They continued to push the idea that the Master Chief was “The last of the Spartans” even though the books said otherwise.

I have a pdf version on my kindle that lacks the cover art, that is a neat cover btw. I like that they all aren’t in the same suit anymore. The other books mention that only people who knew the spartans could differentiate between them because of their mannerisms as they all wore the same green Mark Vs.
I’m also glad 343 is acknowledging the spartans from the books more so than Bungie. Namely, Fred & Kelly in Forward Unto Dawn. If 343 gives the fans what they want in the future, we’ll probably be seeing more of them.
I’ve been playing Halo since Combat Evolved but didn’t read any of the books until after I played Halo 4. I too thought Chief was the only survivor. I’m glad that he’s not.
I have all of the books now and I’m reading them in order. I’m currently on “Ghost of Onyx”, so I have a ways to go. By the time Halo 5 comes out, I should be well caught up.
Thanks guys.

so fred is the only one to get mark VI or ???

No, the others would have received them as well. Kelly did not, only because she had been kidnapped by Doctor Halsey and therefor never returned to Earth to get upgraded like the others.

That’s Linda on the cover in Mark V, not Kelly. Well, I’m assuming so because the book focuses on Fred, Will, and Linda a lot, and there is a trio on the cover. Maybe Linda preferred the Mark V and didn’t want the upgrade.
Hopefully they’ll be reintroduced in some new medium (comic, game or something else) and we’ll get to see them again and learn what they’ve been up to.

No I’m pretty sure it’s Kelly. She never had the chance to receive Mark VI armour as she was kidnapped by Halsey, so she was still equipped with her Mark V armour in Ghosts. Fred, Linda and Will returned to Earth and were given Mjolnir Mark VI before going to Onyx.
Definitely agree with you that they should be introduced again. I’m confident we’ll see them in one of the main games.
