Spartan Customisation Dissapointing

I bought Halo 4 about a week ago, and I LOVE it. I’m having a lot of fun between Campaign and Spartan Ops. One of my favourite features of Halo (well, any game really) is the customisation. Ever since Halo 3 I’ve really enjoyed looking at the different armours, putting them together in different configurations, and generally making my Spartan look badass.

After unlocking the Warrior set after a few rounds of Spartan Ops I decided to research the upcoming armours so I could get an idea of what I wanted, and how to get it. Being honest, there’s very little in Halo 4 that I think I could even stand playing with, let alone actually LIKE. My favourite set is completely gone (CQB), and the only half decent sets are remakes from Halo 3/Reach.

It just seems the art direction has gone completely wacky. It all just keeps reminding me of the Crysis NanoSuit, which isn’t a good thing. I used to play around with almost every set going in Halo 3/Reach, but I just don’t like any of the Halo 4 designs. Maybe my tastes have changed, but it all just doesn’t seem to fit with my association of Halo (and I’ve been playing Halo since the beginning).

I still think Halo 4 has the best gameplay so far. I’ll be playing for years. It’s just a shame my Spartan is never going to look any good while I do it. I seriously hope we get some more DLC armour, especially my usual CQB set.

I agree, there is very little in the way of helmets that I would actually be able to see through. Most of them look like they’re on backwards. How could any spartan possibly wear one without being sick? Maybe we might get DLC armor in this game. Maybe?

Most ridiculous complaint I’ve seen to date, and there are people out there that claim they can’t tell the difference between Halo 4 and Modern Warfare 3.

No 1.: There are more suit customization options in Halo 4 than in any other Halo game to date.

No. 2: Unless you’ve hit SR130, you haven’t seen all of the armors.

No. 3: There isn’t a single suit you like? That’s tough to believe. I’ve rocking out in mostly War Master gear with my Legendary Mark VI helmet.

No 4.: 343 has never stated that the full line of customization options was shipping with the game. They may (and probably will) unlock new things for us to play with over the next few years.

  1. I never debated that amount of choice, but what’s the point if I don’t like most of them? I’d rather have less, but better designs.

2)I’ve thoroughly researched online. Maybe I’m wrong and all these videos with “all armours unlocked” are wrong. I actually hope there’s some better work up there that I haven’t seen. Besides, as far as I was aware the highest rank was 69!?

  1. I said there were very few. All the ones I’m considering using are from previous games. EOD, Mk.VI, Air Assault.

  2. That’s really what I’m hoping. They had some great designs in past games that I’d really like to see. CQB obviously, but there were loads of other great looking pieces in Reach, Commando, Scout, etc. What happened to armours with ammo pouches/other pouches on? Some real variety.

The only helmet I like is the default one. Why did you take away my precious ODST!?

Yeah, I only really like the recruit helmet. :frowning:

I’m liking the customisation myself as well, I really like the addition of changing the entire legs, arms and more selection of visor colours.
But the reason they look so radically different from previous games is because the Art Direction is lead by an entirely different group of people, so that means new ideas, visions and concepts.
The Spartan Armour has become more streamlined, high tech, curved, fluent and abstract. Which is think is a deviation from the design aspects of what the UNSC stood for as these are elements that came to mind for the Covenant.

Before Halo 4, the armour of the Spartans were angular, straight, bold and sturdy to show that they were Human and military, as well as being a polar opposite to the Covenant seeing as they are enemies and alien to each other, their visual stand point should be on opposite sides of the spectrum.

A lot of the armour is very different, lots of UNSC logos and symbols as well as very radical changes in design with some helmets not even having visors, swapping them out with illuminated strips and shapes.
Shoulder pieces are less form fitting and more bulky and torso armour no longer work as attachments to a base piece and serve as entirely different parts.

While this is all interesting to see with being taken to new places with an all new Art team, there are some things I miss from Reach, namely the things like the military looking pouches and equipment and of course the helmet attachments, which meant that if someone had the same headgear as you, you had another degree of uniqueness on top of it.

But what I miss most of all from Reach is how you ACQUIRE armour, seeing as now to get a set of armour I need to obtain how ever many thousand assassinations, exterminations, avengers, paybacks, splatters, wheelmans, kills with a certain gun, etc etc it means that choice is really cut down when you start the game unlike it was in Reach.
Where a selection was presented to you at a certain rank and you could CHOOSE which one you could purchase/obtain rather than now when you reach a certain rank you see everyone wearing the same helmet as you and the same visor colour
cough E.V.A/SILVER coughcough

So, as great as it is seeing all these new armour designs and sets, about over half of it is locked until you get these pointless and barely impressive commendations months/years later when the community has died down with every Spartan looking the same.

Just an input from a Concept Artist Intern, sorry for the essay post. I’ve written several thousand word dissertations about Art Direction in Video Games.

@The Spartdan

Don’t you like Mark VI helmet?!

You not liking the armor =/= a lack of armor or a lack of great looking armor. Just because something doesn’t appeal to you personally doesn’t mean it’s bad.
