In Halo 4 and onwards all armor was changed to look different, almost more modern. Is this because of the Spartan IV project that it looks differnt? Is it just because it’s been a while since the last time we saw Spartan armor and new designs have been made by the UNSC/Manufacturing companies? or did 343 just want to change what the armor looked like and now we have to believe that it looked like this all along?
Mjolnir in older Halo games was GEN 1. Mjolnir in Halo 4 and Halo 5 is GEN 2.
Wait so how did Chief change armor between Halo 3 and 4 when he was on the Dawn the whole time?

Nanomachines being instructed by good ole’ Cortana during cryosleep is a popular belief. The other popular belief is that his suit looked like that since H2, and it’s an artistic retcon. I forget which theory is currently considered true. Or more popular.

I believe the nanobot theory is the standard. Frankie has touched on the subject.

Halo Canon does a in depth video of the matter, with lots of supporting facts
In the Prologue, all the Spartans share Chief’s armor because of time/resource constraints. They didn’t have the ability to implement new old models for one cutscene.
Chief’s armor was modified by Cortana using nanomachines, but part of it will always simply be attributed to artistic/functional license. Chief’s armor needed to change to be functional with some of the things he’s doing in Halo 4.
Overall, most new Spartan armors are Gen 2.
In terms of the Canon: It was stated by Frank O’Connor that Cortana changed and repaired the Chief’s suit with nano machines that were aboard the Forward Unto Dawn. Recently it has been stated that the armor used by the Chief and Blue Team in Halo 5 is actually going to Gen 2 armor (including the Chief’s, it is just that it will look exactly like his previous armor aside from no longer having the damage on the breastplate). Most if not all the armor SPARTANS wear now, whether it is the IIs, IIIs,or IVs are probably wearing Gen 2. Along with this 343 is throwing their own spin on the armors in terms of art. So to answer your question yes the armor has changed because of the UNSC companies that build them in the canon, also yes 343 did want to change what the armor looked like but no they did not want to make people believe that this is what the Chief’s armor always looked like.

Basically the insides have been stripped and upgraded and then put back on the outer shell of his old armor. For what makes the Armor Gen 2 isn’t the shell. But the insides.

All official info indicates Cortana did it while John was in cryo. The Mark VI has some form of automatic repair function, likely using nanomachines. It’s possible that, with all the time she had, Cortana was able to use these nanomachines to upgrade the armour and alter the appearance.
