Yes we’ve all seen that one neogaf post saying that these spartan abilities aren’t armour abilities as such, rather new mechanics.
Though what if these new mechanics are simply the effect of having what would previously be classified as an AA made default for everyone?

To be honest, sprint being something you needed an extra armor component for was silly. Spartans using their MJOLNIR to its capability and Spartans doing Spartan things… I’m fine with that.
Frankie commented on Spartan Abilities, stating that they were basically the same as, if referenced to Halo 2, dual wielding and vehicle boarding. I don’t think they are as game changing as armor lock or jet-pack.

Yeah I already acknowledged that point.
I’m just asking what if spartan abilities are mechanics default to the player that would otherwise be classified as an AA in Reach/H4.
We see in the Halo 5 beta trailer right after the announcement of “All New Spartan Abilities” a spartan crash down with his thrusters sending out a shockwave of kind. If that indeed is an example of a spartan ability it looks much more like an AA made default rather than some new way for the player to physically interact with the world. (ie boarding)

If we look at the beta trailer, its quite obvious that thrusters are now a default setting, integrated into the spartan armour. So thats one AA more or less confirmed, but now as a default mechanic (i guess this isn’t too bad, because even the competitive players didn’t seem to mind it).
Default sprint also seems to be an obvious one at this point as well. THIS IS bad though because of what it does to map design. Then you have taking cover as a mechanic, and also (possibly) sliding. I honestly don’t know how to feel about that…AAs maybe gone theoretically, but as a function, i believe the concept still exists.

True, but to be honest I believe they are much more of a build-up system, something along the lines of a kill-meter (such as the Infinity War-Games Ordinance drops system) would need to be filled, activating a special Spartan Ability that can have an effect on other players and give you a bit of an advantage, i.e. the pickups in Halo 3. A ground pound that you can use every time you fill your ‘kill meter’ would be more than a welcome replacement for those god awful game breakers like Jet-pack and Armor-lock shivers. They would also bring back that tactical feel from the arena gamestyle that was in Halo 2 and 3.
The thruster tackle-ish thing could also be something of the same accord, or something just purely cinematic altogether, I will keep my thoughts low until we start to get some information on the stated abilities, rather than start assuming that they will be huge gameplay mechanics.

I’d probably be against a kill-meter to activate such abilities. I would rather it be innate abilities that we can activate at will. Would make being a spartan more meaningful
If they are, I hope they restrict it to that thruster pack we all saw in the trailer, because the last thing we need is for them to keep AA’s and just pretend they are something else.

Well the thing that really pissed people off with AAs (along with trash AC, JP and PV) was the loss of a even ground. If AAs are made default this argument is no longer valid.
In short, OP; No. I don’t think it will simply just be AA’s unlocked for everyone. Whether it’s in a loadout or available to everyone, it’s still game-breaking. I think these abilities will be something totally different.
Just a hunch.

Can you elaborate on how the concept of making AAs default is game-breaking? and by default i mean you all spawn with it, nothing to do with loadouts.

That’s my point, the idea of making them avaiilable to everyone at all times or keeping them as loadout only is moot. It doesn’t solve anything. Whether they’re available to everyone or not, they’re still broken & ruin gameplay.
AA’s break the actual flow of the gameplay and ruin it simply by their use, whether it’s by one person or all. Therefore making them as standard, is a pointless move in my mind. It doesn’t solve the situation.

Short and sweet: Spartan abilities are not the same as AA’s.
Spartan abilities are new mechanics, such as possibly sliding, ground pound, etc., (just throwing ideas out there), but aren’t things like built-in active camo or thruster pack. New button combos for new mechanics. Nothing monstrously game-changing.
Random spark of imagination after reading through here:
What if you ground pound a moving warthog?
Back on topic:
I don’t think so. They look more natural to the Spartan than any AA. Only thing close is thruster pack, but they showed Chief as having that capability in H4 anyways.
> I’d probably be against a kill-meter to activate such abilities. I would rather it be innate abilities that we can activate at will. Would make being a spartan more meaningful
I agree. I think waiting to get 5 kills before I am able to slam my fist on the ground is a waste of a ability. Though I am still not sold in the ground pound being anywhere near effective…

Now that is a thought.
Its funny they have similar ability called Hover Slam in Transformers: Fall of Cybertron and not a lot of people, including myself were fans of that.
Being able to smash a Warthog would give you this godly feeling of power, I know that for sure.

Would be a cool way to bring back that awesome feeling you got when a ghost exploded around you in Reach. Too soon= splattered. Too late=open target. Right on time=amazing kill, but your shields get drained from the explosion. Sound balanced?

Sounds good to me.
could be a default thruster, he thrusts towards the ground so maybe the original armor lock to take away fall damage like in the h4 cutscene when the spartans thrust towards the ground, this would explain the slide to cover aswell
btw you can already kill people from above with an assassination
> What if you ground pound a moving warthog?
This.
