Spartan Abilities For Newbs? Makes Game Too Easy?

Naded jukes the hell out of Ace in HCS this weekend!

Can’t wait to see what these wizards will be doing a few months from now.

noobs wont be able to fully take advantage of the movement when they first start playing…its fine

My title was meant to be sarcastic.

In the vid Naded uses ground pound, thrust, sprint, and clamber to absolutely destroy Ace. Naded was like a damn ninja!

I think people are talking about after learning the basic movement/fundamentals of the game. Anyone could juke any pro if they weren’t familiar with the game. Heck being familiar with Tetris movements you will be better than a beginner.

I think what people are saying is it doesn’t take long to learn and there’s a little skill to luck ratio between them.

> noobs wont be able to fully take advantage of the movement when they first start playing…its fine

True. That’s why you don’t design game mechanics around what noobs will do with them. You design them around how they will be used at high-level play, or should I say, exploited…

Ooo. Oooooooo. Oooooooooooo. That was nasty.

Saw that on the Spectator mode. Wish Naded would start streaming again, though! Guess he will start again after the big tourney. His moves are sick, and is probably best 1v1 Halo player ever.

Just because some of these abilities reduce skill, does not mean they take no skill. For example:
Hover: Makes it much easier to kill someone in the air without needing a “skill jump”

  • People can still make pretty skillful shots while hovering.
Clamber: Makes it much easier to move about the map without needing a “skill/crouch jump”
  • People can still make pretty skillful jumps incorporating the clamber.

However, there are a lot of elements in this game on top of those mentioned that do cater towards beginners such as:

  • Weapon callouts on screen
  • Verbal weapon callouts
  • AI callouts
  • More powerful weapons
  • Faster kill times
  • Faster spawning pickups
  • Visual clues such as the reflection of the sniper being aimed

Though these cater to beginners, thinking that a beginner is going to beat a seasoned veteran is ridiculous. No beginner is going to instantly know that the storm rifle is actually the best assault weapon in arena except by experience.

Interestingly too, his “juking” didn’t get him a kill. It provided a way for him to escape. Perfect example of the game becoming easier (more ways to back out of a fight).

His kill was very simple. A clamber and double melee. Real skillful.

I’m not saying he’s not good, but this is a perfect example of the game becoming easier. You can still have pros be pros on an easy game.

And pros will still always rise to the top because they will always take full advantage of everything the game provides.

On the flip side, as a game that you want to market to the masses, you need to have some benefits for a new or lesser skilled player too. Pros are only the top 5% (maybe) of those who play. So the other 95% of us need to find some enjoyment in the game too. I’d be content with campaign and customs, but I also want points to unlock things too. If the arena mode has so much skill gap that I get molly-whopped regularly, then I stop playing. Thats bad if you want to keep a large demographic interested in your product.

BTW, why didnt he just kill him with the ground pound? Why use it as an escape?

That’s funny, because several pro’s that saw this video said exactly the opposite of what you did.

Also, Quake is probably the most skillful game when it comes to raw mechanics, and getting out of a fight is extremely easy in that game…One rocket jump off a wall and you’re out of sight.

You’re trying to hard to hate on Halo man, just give credit where credit’s due, that was a sick move, and Halo 5 has a very high skill ceiling.

Using your abilities to escape does NOT make a game easier. The combination naded did in this video is full of quick reaction times and quick thinking. He uses a combo to escape, ya sure, but no noob can pull that off. If the game was easy, any noob could pull that off and would do so as much as possible

It’s funny how they all band together like that isn’t it? It’s even more funny how the community eats up everything pros say like a loaf of bread in a famine.

I don’t think there’s much debatable as to what he did. Evaded the kill. Clambered up and got a double melee kill. What is there to debate?

You need to accept that people can have a difference in opinion as you. That might be tough if you go throughout life with the mindset you have now. I’m not trying to hate on Halo. Look at my CSR. I play Halo plenty and I wouldn’t play it if I didn’t like it. That doesn’t mean there can’t be aspects of it I don’t like. Heck there’s something wrong with someone if there’s nothing they don’t like about a game.

I can disagree with you that Halo 5 has less of a “skill ceiling” as you give it credit for.

Exactly. You can make a game of throwing a rock at the ground and you can make it skillful.

Honestly, I don’t think he used it as an escape. I think he missed the ground pound, bailed the fight and waited for his shield to come up so he could get the upper hand. Common sight in Halo 5.

It’s like a basketball player that throws a cross court pass that goes through someones legs and ends with a slam dunk. Sure it looked sick, but that doesn’t mean that’s what he knew was going to happen lol

Don’t know why you are so defensive. Ace wins that against 99% of other Pros, I hate to break it to you. Naded is just a really good 1v1 player. He plays with laser focus like he’s on adderall.

I mean if you want to say anything you should say that Ace choked because he missed a shot, then he just sat there waiting instead of getting in a good position.

You sure can disagree man, just like Creationists can disagree with evolution. Doesn’t mean you’re right though, sorry.

I disagree. Providing more ways to escape a fight would make a game easier to me. When you can pick and choose your battles for when you have the upper hand.

You speak like you represent everyone who has ever played this game. Believe it or not, I bet a noob has pulled something like that off plenty of times. They might not have known what they were doing, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. I honestly don’t even think he meant to do it in this video. I think he was going for the ground pound, missed and clambered up the ledge that he hit with his whiff.

Lol I don’t know why some people get so offended by the fact that people can disagree. You can try to prove me wrong with something that can’t be proven all you want, but there’s no reason to be sorry and act like you’re still right and your opinion is more valid. Big egos in here man.

You can prove it to yourself if you’d like.

Try to make a play like this in game on someone in the same league as you. I bet its a lot harder than you give credit for.

Ground Pound back to the ledge in the heat of the moment was kind of impressive.

Everything else…lol who the -Yoink- cares? Clamber into a double melee is impressive?
