Spartan abilities changes & 'elite' abilities

Irrelevant of whether you like or dislike spartan abilities, the truth is they are not going away, so we should be attempting to guide 343 to make them as balanced and good as possible.

First of all sprint. I think not recharging your shields is a good thing, but I think we should make sure there is a cooldown between sprints, and possibly it shouldn’t be unlimited

Ground punch - whilst it looks hard to do, and you hang in the air makes you vulnerable, I would like to see a tradeoff through a loss of shield, and/or the time taken after landing a ground punch when you are immobile/vulnerable (I didn’t see if it had this).
Maybe a longer charge leads to a more powerful/slightly larger area of damage (so you could kill two people) but more shield loss?

Shoulder barge may need a similar cooldown or shield depletion to make it more risk when running in for melee. But it should definitely do more damage than a standard melee

I think climb is better than a double jump scenario, as the animation is a knock off for missing a jump or attempting to navigate the map

Also I really hope that there are elites in Halo 5. It was possible in Halo 2 and Halo 3 (and technically reach, but their different stats spoiled it slightly).

If there is, then spartan abilities can also apply to elites - we know they can have thrusters on their backs.

Finally I would also like to see the return of the evade/elite roll which we saw in Halo reach.
There is no reason spartans couldn’t do it, and it could be used as a more powerful version of the thruster; do you want to jump left/right/forward/backwards further than the thruster will take you, double tapping could use this instead

Again this could be done in a balanced trade off sort of way - a more powerful version of the thruster, but with the downside that you can longer shoot and your vision is disrupted as you roll.

Thoughts?

I like it, but I think the ground pound is fine. The loss of shields are a little too extreme since the ground pound is already a high risk ability. Charging up would be pretty cool though.

Instead of thrusters elites could just evade as a reskin. Also the ground pound could have the boarded affect once you get thrown out of a vehicle but for a slightly longer time.

PS. I loved nightfall but the elite was portrayed as slugish, I didn’t like that., anyone else feel the same?

Yes it’s annoying and it’s almost how they’re always shown, except in Halo 2 when the Arbiter is evading Miranda. Spartan ops, Halo Wars they all look like lumbering idiots, which is completely against what they’re described as.

im thinking there will need to be some tweaks made to some of the abilities (naturally) but overall i would say im quite happy with the direction 343 has gone. much more balanced and competitive than halo 4 by the looks of it so far.

I may be a part of a vast minority, but as far as sprint goes, it should be in the game. No offense, being a 1 ton super soldier, in a vastly superior exoskeleton, walking gracefully doesn’t seem like a show of tactile intellect.

Purists are what kill off IP’s, as they don’t want anything to change ,aside from maybe scenery. If Halo is to still be a competent game, it has to change. This isn’t 2005, 10 year old gameplay isn’t going to cut it. (Nor is being a slow, bulky target.)

Yo creo que esta ves intetan emparejar y que no sea tan desleal las ventajas pero la eliminacion no es la solucion ya que estas abilidades son algo que le agrega un factor interesante al juego con poderes y todo eso que nos encanta

Having played destiny for the last few weeks, I have found going back to halo quite jarring without the lack of sprint. And as you said it seems sluggish almost

Maybe elites having evade as an alternative animation for the same thing would be cool, but why can’t both species do both? Evade could be a more extreme version, but with the tradeoff being you lose the ability to shoot etc

I agree that purists who don’t want any change only hurt the IPs future. However, the group who says “just get with the times”, are, in my opinion, just an opposition to that, and neither of them bring anything to the table.

A 1 ton super soldier who can’t sprint seems off, right? But doesn’t it also seem off that a 1 ton super soldier can’t run and aim at the same time? I found Halo to have en excellent gameplay because you could shoot, melee and throw grenades at all times; you were always at the ready! THAT’S what I think when I hear super soldier! Running for cover defenselessly, praying that no one will shoot you is for low ranking soldiers, imo.

I thing sprint takes away from the brilliance that is Halo’s fundamentals(always at the ready, equal starts, arena gameplay), and I would like to see it gone.
I am not against change, though, and I agree that Halo, in a way, has to evolve:

  • I am personally liking the idea of built in thrusters, and I’ve been wishing they would substitute for sprint for a while now.
  • Mantling also seems to add a new layer to Halo that can work out greatly.
  • Slide and Shoulder Charge seemed like it could work, my main problem with them is that they require sprint to be used, so they help in reducing the “pure” Halo arena gameplay sensation.
  • Ground Pound seems weird, but I have yet to try it out to make a judgment. If it would work just like an overhead melee, then I would really like the idea, but for now I remain a bit skeptical until I finally try it for myself.Tl;dr: Ultimately this looks a lot better than Halo 4 and I think many people are excited at it’s possibilities. Some people are overreacting, but every pro-Halo 5 person isn’t “radical” and every anti-Halo 5 person isn’t a “purist”. Halo got popular for a very good reason, and it’s not unreasonable to be vocal when your favorite gameplay-type from your favorite game is being threatened.

I’m guessing that Evade is going to be returning because Agent Locke did it in the new GameStop trailer and we have been able to do whatever he does in the trailer (besides evade). Oh, and we can climb up walls…man, that would be cool.

I like the idea of the elites just using evade as a reskin for thrusters. Also that elite in nightfall was trying to be sneaky but failed.

Oh agreed, it’s pretty stupid to think of a Spartan walking gracefully. Thank God they’ve never done that. It would look ridiculous.

However, I still don’t know why I Spartan is incapable of running in more than one direction, or firing his gun at the same time. I also don’t know why you felt the need to make such an unfounded statement without any examples or data backing it up.

I believe the Elites should have abilities that mirror or counter the Spartan abilities. For instance, Elites would be able to Kick-Bash in exchange for the Spartan Charge ability, or Evade in place of the Thruster. Things like sprinting, clambering and sliding wouldn’t need alternatives considering an Elite could easily pull these off.

The problem with giving Elites Evade instead of Thruster Packs is that you can’t use Evade in the air, you have to be on the ground. But with Thrusters you can blast yourself in any direction in mid-air and on the ground. It would kind of be unfair for Elites unless you give them more/better abilities in comparison to Spartans.

This guy is correct. If we’re replacing Thruster with Evade (and I really don’t think we need to - I think Elites could be perfectly balanced with Spartans with similar hitboxes and abilities) We have to deal with the fact that Evade from Reach was only possible on the ground, limiting its use in Guardians. I think Elites could use the standard Thrust, or do some Evade + Thrust that involves firing the thrusters and rolling, because that would look badass as -Yoink-

Doing a roll/flip in the air as an Elite would look epic!

I’ll agree. I hadn’t given any thought to how evade in midair would work. Perhaps Thruster should just be a universal thing.

I would still like the ability to kick-bash though. That would be awesome.

-Yoinkity- -Yoink- -Yoinking- yes. Who the fudge needs Spartan Charge when I have an Elite kick??
