Space combat again?

I replayed Reach on legendary and my gosh, the space combat still feels as exhilarating as when I first played the game. 343 is really missing on a huge opportunity here. While the armor abilities from reach have lived on in different forms, why hasn’t space combat? Wouldn’t you like to have a Sabre vs Seraph deathmatch over the Earth, Harvest, or post-invasion Reach? I get that the covenant have been defeated now, but that excuse wasn’t viable for 4 and 5. Maneuvering around debris, ships under construction, frigates and cruisers, destroyers, space stations, asteroids, all of this could make a very fun, very unique experience. And the best part is that this wouldn’t even need to be a standalone game, just another gamemode to choose from.

The space combat has been disappointing since Reach. We’ve basically just gotten space obstacle courses which was a nice change of pace from the normal game, but it fell flat with excitement.

It’d be nice if they expanded on the space combat for sure, even branching out into multiplayer territory with Slayer dogfights for example, rather than keeping the space experience exclusive to just the campaign.

Maybe like a spin off halo game for space combat…

I always felt Reach’s space sequence felt very out of place. Space battles are definitely an important part of Halo’s universe, but I don’t think they belong in the main campaigns.

Apart from great to play, Long Night of Solace is one of my favourite levels out of all Halo games. It was very well done, and very, very pretty. More space combat is more than welcome imo.

Really? It felt right at home to me. Consider the Banshee dogfights around the spire on Two Betrayals, around the gas mine on Threshold in Halo 2, the chasms leading to Delta Halo’s control centre, Kikowani Station in ODST, the Hornet battle across the generator towers on Halo 3’s The Covenant and traversing New Alexandria in the Falcon. It’s just another fun dogfight in a different (and may I say, beautiful) setting.

i liked the space combat in reach. i always wondered why it wasn’t kept around to some degree. maybe a new multiplayer mode. it should have build on the little taste of it we got in reach, as long as the core gameplay wouldn’t suffer because of it.
halo shouldn’t become a space combat game, but it would be a nice little addition

yes but i like the combat dynamic engine!

I would like to see something similar to the space combat in the old battlefronts make it to multiplayer. I’m indifferent about space combat in the campaign, but how cool would it be to board an enemy ship and attempt to destroy it from the inside, while your teammates are fighting in seraphs or sabre’s trying to stop the destruction of your ship!

I never cared for that part of the mission in Reach. It wasn’t fun or challenging at all. I might get hate for saying this, but I think Halo 5 did it RIGHT. Blue Team gave us a balanced mixture of on-foot and Banshee combat that was genuinely fun. The Long Night of Solace does become loads better when you actually board the Long Night of Solace, but the flying sequence is just bad and not fun.

I’m up for more spaceship combat. That mission in Reach was a breath of fresh air I wasn’t expecting in Halo, very welcome in my opinion. Even that N64 style mission 4 was really fun.

agreed. but a cool game mode would be a concept from the old battlefronts. you have 2 large ships and a team on each with fly able ships in the docking bay…the idea would be either capture the flag or who can blow up the other large ship first. players of the opposing team would land inside the ship and try to arm a bomb or disable it before the other team did it to theirs. The ships can be used for dog-fighting, getting to the other ship, as well as disabling parts of the larger ship.

Not sure what you’re trying to say, but we don’t need to limit space battles to one mission of the campaign. We could have one big combat mission and then an obstacle course of sorts.

In addition to space combat, atmospheric combat would be really cool too. I’ve always wanted to control a Longsword fighter.

Reach missed that opportunity hard. Why wasn’t Space Combat a thing? I have a cool concept of a Space Warzone gamemode that I think everyone would love. At least, it looks very fun and interesting in my head.
2 Stalwart class Frigates, 1 Red, 1 Blue. Teams have access to Point-Defense weapons to destroy enemy fighters. Armories are still located in large asteroids, with a lot of cover. The middle building is a full-fledged Space Station, VERY large. No base has weapons, only fighters.
When controlling all bases, the enemy Frigate will be exposed to invasion. Objective is to…

D E S T R O Y T H E E N E M Y C O R Edestroy the ship’s core. After the core has been destroyed, the team responsible wins. Fighters include Broadswords (Standard), Sabres, Longswords, Space Banshees and Seraphs, maybe the Phaeton too or a Promethean space fighter.
For Covenant encounters, a CPV class Corvette (Reach) will appear and Banshees and Seraphs will fly out to protect it. Objective is kill the leader. Prometheans too provided they have a ship as small or slightly larger than a Stalwart or the Corvette.
Brief, but it’s just an insight to my idea.
