Soution to Fall Damage

In Halo 3, when the Chief crashes into the jungle he locks his armor to survive the impact. What if, similar to Battlefield’s parachute, if you say tap A 3 times, your armor locks. Now, the cool part, I think, would be the second. When you are locked, the only way to unlock is for a team member to come and hold X near you. To eliminate it becoming like armor lock from Reach, enemies can come and hold X and they will do some kind of assassination like shoot into the space between armor, stab them in the visor, stuff like that.
So say I am in a Banshee. Some guy in a Warthog is tearing me apart with the turret and I bail out. I lock my armor and crash to Earth. My teammates get an indicator on their visor that shows where I am located. My enemies from the warthog begin driving to where I fell. Now the situation could end three ways here.

  1. My teammates do not get there in time! The enemy jumps out of the warthog, and stabs me in the visor, I re spawn.
  2. My teammate is very near to my crash. He spots the indicator, and sprints over to me. Checking for enemies he comes near and holds X. A short animation occurs with the spartan working over the armor, and it unlocks. I come back, move slowly for a few seconds, and have lost shields until they recharge, but I continue the fight.
  3. No one gives a -Yoink!- that I’m locked. My teammates don’t care, and my enemies have other fish to fry. I could sit for 10 minutes waiting, but that would be terrible. An option on the screen after a minute states respawn, so you would explode (Like in the books, Spartans would self destruct to stop the enemy from retrieving the armor!) You press respawn, and after say 10 seconds, Boom!
Now I just realized, that would give the locked spartan, in this case me, a chance to get a kill before death. They could re spawn if they know that an enemy is coming (Now, of course, the enemy who caused damage last to the spartan would get the kill if they respawn), and perhaps get a kill if an enemy gets too close after the 10 seconds! Also, he might respawn, only to find out that his teammate is right there and accidentally betrays them, oops!
Is this a good idea? Give me some suggestions on how this could be made better, or how people could exploit it (The new fad, your whole team locking at spawn! HAHA!)
Edit: Maybe you automatically respawn after a minute or two, just so people can’t lock for a whole game and it won’t slow gameplay too much.

A better solution will be to include an option to determine the distance one can fall before taking damage, and the amount of damage you can recieve.

The problem with your idea is that it relies on teamwork. Many Halo players hate teamwork.

Well, I feel like that is the usual idea. It’s what happened in Reach, and I was dying falling from my Banshee, or even falling medium distances.

That would slow down gameplay way too much in matchmaking. I’m all for it in custom games, though.

Maybe provide some added bonus or something?

Personally, I think this would be a great addition. Are you guys reading the whole post? How about this, you automatically respawn (EXPLODE!) after like a minute, so people can’t just lock for entire games?

What do you mean, a bonus?

this idea is not well thought out. it would be stupid for gameplay.

I could believe no fall damage period.

but this, no.

i’m ok with fall damage.

Can you explain why it is not thought out? If not, I will disregard this comment, at least other people are explaining why they don’t like it.
