So, just something that occurred to me today. Almost half of season 1 of SpOps has been released.
In pre-release interviews with 343 it was intimated that the first season will be free (not actually free though, because it’s included in the retail price, but let’s just use that word anyway) and future seasons will be released as paid DLC.
So, let’s say that completing each episode of SpOps takes about as much time as your average length of an ODST Firefight game (since each chapter takes about 10 mins to complete and there’s 5 chapters in an episode)
[And let’s point out the obvious here: SpOps is nothing but a more limited & less tactical slaughterfest version of Firefight with a new cutscene every week]
How do you feel about paying for future SpOps seasons? Can you honestly justify giving your hard-earned cash for a cutscene and 50 minutes of fighting random enemies on a multiplayer map? Maybe you’ll get to press a button to open a gate every so often too.
This sounds like a bait thread. It’s not really though. I want to know if you’ll pay for future SpOps seasons. Do you think it’s worth it?
No way. I’d rather have firefight x1000. The design in this is just terrible. The only thing I almost enjoy is the few minute cutscenes which I can just watch on youtube.
My theory and hope is that future seasons will be “payed” in the sense that they’ll utilize DLC maps, so you’ll need to purchase map packs in order to play them.
IMO I don’t think they will sell individual episodes. Probably sell them in seasons. But yes i would. Spartan ops to me gave me what FF seemed to lack in Reach. Granted i dislike the unlimited lives (hoping that gets taken out at some point) but the reason on why i am killing things keeps me into it.
No way I will purchase it, I only do them for the cutscenes since it moves the story forward and possible details to the next Halo… but I will just watch them on YouTube.

We had Firefight in the last two Halo games. Why did they take it out and replace it with a more limited feature that we have to have XBL to play and that we will eventually need to pay for?
And why is everyone defending them for doing that?
I don’t think I’d pay for spartan ops if it became paid dlc; not unless it starts to become a better story, flowing like a mini campaign, and not just fighting guys for 10 minutes for no real purpose. I like the idea behind spartan ops, it is genuinely a fantastic idea, but until the servers work consistently without lag, its not fun playing with other people right now (and that should be the best part). So you put it out there as a mini campaign that continues to actually flow, I’m in. Otherwise I’d be more apt to pay for a full length CGI movie instead of cutscene episodes.
But don’t get me wrong I love the idea behind spartan ops, way more than I like firefight, but at the moment it’s just not living up to the same hype as firefight did. But of course neither one live up to the original Horde on Gears of War 2, that was the best team based play for this gametype style.

this seems fair. i wouldn’t pay for SO if it just wants keep kicking me through sniper alley.

I don’t think 343i would have the audacity to re-use existing assets AGAIN for a Spartan Ops season - nobody in their right mind would pay for such a thing. If anything, I think that a Season 2 of Spartan Ops would be vastly superior to the first season, because it’d be unlikely for 343i to reuse existing content again.
Also I quite like Spartan Ops, even if it reuses existing maps (which Firefight did any way, so meh). The narrative context is nice, and it doesn’t get too boring because even when playing on the same level the encounters are set up differently.
I truly hope that they wont make us pay for Spartan Ops. Becasue that would truly be messed up. Why should we have to pay for a game type that we get and should get for free, I mean we bought the game. If they make it so that we have to pay for it then like everyone is saying, we can just watch the video on youtube. Wont pay more for less or something that we are owed.
