Pretty simple video, a showing of the new “Forge Island”. Great! However thats not whats bothering me. I’m not sure if it’s just me picking up body language wrong but there seems to be a few personality issues with some 343 employees. I’m not trying to bash anyone or start some sort of flame war I just wanted to discuss 343 employees and how they present themselves.
Take the lead multiplayer designer in this video for example, despite all the amazing creations that the Halo community has brought using forge, custom games and theatre he can’t even call the fans creative without laughing his -Yoink- off. It’s like he has some overly inflated ego.
Hold that thought. Fast forward to when beloved frankie was “apologising” for the state of the multiplayer. For every acknowledgement that was made there was another sentence going on about how much of a success Halo 4 was. I feel this detachment from 343, it’s fine not caring about fans and personally, I can understand that but could they not act a little more professional in that respect? Maybe it’s just me.
You have to understand that developers really can’t admit to faults or problems within the game or community. At least while under the watchful eye of a publisher, especially Microsoft. It’s bad business to not “act” like what you’re doing is the best thing in the world and that everybody should get excited for it. When you don’t you have problems with the publisher and might risk losing your job. The best they can do is keep their mouth shut.
Happens everywhere in the world, even actors have to hype up their own movies. Once Ben Afleck came out and said his upcoming movie was pretty stupid, and he got into a lot of yoink for that.

Actually I never thought about it like that, thanks for the new perspective. I still think it’s wrong but it makes a lot of sense.

It cant just be me who thinks jessica shea is just the most irritating little patronising munchkin ever right? Why does every sentence sound like a question jessica? Christ you annoy me.
Its her faux forced humour that gets me the most. Just feels like she was put there to satisfy the dorky -Yoink!- gamer stereotype we all hate so much.
‘Ooh look at me im a girl i flirt you should love me.’

I don’t mind her at all. Frankie bugs me though.
I really want to know how a games journalist who joined Bungie as Community Manager during Halo 2 eventually became the Franchise Director. Did nobody else at Bungie want the job??? Were they all sick and tired of Halo?
In my opinion we can’t trust any more big titles. I mean, look around all the games currently released. Tell me a title where the producers are caring for true of the customers.
You will discover that only games made by small groups and that don’t have big marks behind them (like Microsoft, EA Games, etc.) are really good games. For example Arma3, Minecraft and many other titles that maybe don’t have super high quality graphic but have a gameplay satisfing for true…

Streetfighter IV was pretty good, it revived the community. Mass Effect 3 was good, the only flaw people had with it was the ending.
Now making the customer happy comes first you know why? Because making a game means investing in something and recovering AT LEAST all the costs. Every big title is big because it was good (at least at some point), same goes for Halo, thats why H4 sold 8 Million copies.
When I saw the video I was really shocked, on the other hand I had a “similar” experience and know that sometimes you just can’t help it, you’ll laugh and won’t stop, no matter how inappropiat it might be. The really bad thing is that they didn’t manage to do it at least once, on the other hand, it’s IGN, and IGN sucks.

Well, Nintendo. I’ll ignore Another M for now, but they released Luigi’s Mansion 2, another Mario Kart, new Zelda, etc. While they are scaring me with what they are doing with their consoles, they still make quality games that have replay value.

This is off topic but yeah smaller group games such as Minecraft (Xbox version) are finding to be more fun and its gameplay is really good! Myself i cannot wait for Metro: Last Light by 4A Games.
That is the problem… in the past game producers had the idea of “we must make a great game for our fans!” now instead it become only a “we need to make something for earning more money”.
For that the new games are all so similar, without anything special. Producers are no more “risking” in new things, they are just taking used working ideas to be sure of selling the game.
Halo 4 sadly become one of those. If there wasn’t the past of it making the game famous, probably now it would be one of the dozen games that are “nice” but are forgotten right after comes out a new game…
Forgers have been asking 343 for 1 large island they could use.
343 gives them 2 small and 1 medium islands about 150’ above sea level! completely flat - no tundra or caves… I swear its like 343 get off on trolling forgers.

Sigh…
You are right, but you have to remember this is their first game that they’re made and they have no experience.

No, a small, medium, and large island. All flat, AS ASKED FOR.
The Hang Em High remake took about about a 1/10th of the main island, which leaves a lot of potential for other things. There are smaller islands for natural boundries and other ideas. Bigger isn’t always better. There is a lot of airspace, above and inbetween the islands.
There is potential for verticality and other ideas with the cylinder islands. Bases coming out of the side, asthetics, Ascension remakes, etc.
A massive flat island sticking a centimeter above water level actually may have less potential and room to do stuff than 3 flat islands of varying size and varying height above the water.
And I agree that they’re probably laughing at the silliness of what they’re doing, unscripted and making mistakes, randomness. Not making fun of the community.
And as the franchise directer, you truly expect him to run his mouth about how horrible a game is at a public event? Besides even Microsoft breathing down their backs, why would anyone do that? Also, Halo 4 was a critical and financial success.

I noticed this too. And it really annoyed me. After saying they made mistakes, he really did say “but I don’t want to focus on the negatives”. What’s with that? Negatives are what should be focused on. Also, I don’t know why everybody is acting like we should be grateful and bow down to 343 because of the new Forge Island that’s coming out. And who cares if it’s free? Why should we be thankful as if it’s a special surprise that it’s free? Decent forge environments should have been there in the first place. They’re certainly not something anyone should have ever expected to pay for. And I don’t know anything about game designing, but it looks like they quite literally copied and pasted one flat island and scaled it to three different sizes. Are we supposed to believe it took them months of painstaking work to develop that? All with the community’s wishes in mind? It’s almost like they heard people asking for some flat ground, so they made the entire thing flat as if to say “here’s the flat ground you wanted, whiners!”. In short, I hate to say it but I think the OP is right.
Something occured to me about the new forge map. It HAD to be free. If it were charged DLC and forgers went and paid for it, What good would it be when people who don’t forge wouldn’t buy it? Forgers would construct their maps and then have a hard time finding people to play them with.
At first I agreed with the sentiment that 343 had made a really nice gesture for the forge/customs community. Then I realised it wouldn’t work any other way.
